Beyond Lesser Things: Dr. Tom Catena

Beyond Lesser Things tells the story of the 2017 Aurora Prize Laureate Doctor Tom Catena - a man serving as the only surgeon for 1.2 million people in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. Born into a big, loving, Italian family with a ticket to the good life, Tom was hungry for the best that life had to offer: “plenty of money and time on the golf course with his buddies” and a secure career as an engineer.
Until he changed his mind and decided to pursue medicine.
That was the first step in a long journey of choosing a life guided by upside-down values. Instead of security, wealth, and staying close to family, Doctor Tom chose to serve in one of the most remote regions on the other side of the world.
This intimate portrait of Doctor Tom documents the heart and passion of a once-in-a-generation hero - quietly, faithfully saving thousands of lives outside the spotlight.
