  • What are the best albums from 1979? I do a rundown of my favorite punk, post-punk, and rock albums from 1979. I am sure you will agree that these are the best albums from this particular year! :) Feel free to join in and list what your favorites are in the comments below. I would love to hear from you!
Album I regret not mentioning here that should have been featured: The Pretenders debut! Well, kind of confusing on the release date because in some countries it came out in 1979 and others in 1980. Personally I thought it was 1980! Huuuuuge miss because I am a mega fan of that band!
Thanks for watching! Like my video? Please subscribe and give me a thumbs up!

I turned 13 right at the end of 1979. The beginning of my teenage years corresponded to the beginning of the 80s. In the early 80s, I was mostly into punk, but I revisited the great new wave and post-punk stuff from 1979-1980 in my late 20s/early 30s. Now, 1979-1980 just might be my favorite two-year stretch in music.

1979 was a massive year for me musically. I turned 13 and it was the first year I heard new wave on the radio and saw my first punk band at a lunch hour concert at my high school, then formed my own band soon after. Many of the records you mention that I bought in the 79-81 period are still a treasured part of my collection, and there are a few that you reminded me i need to get ahold of! It was a period in which the record companies didn't quite have a hold on where this new explosion of music was headed so sonically it's super diverse, from more edgy post punk to more accessible new wave. The word that always comes to my mind about that music is " fresh". Great video, thanks for this.

Hi Andrew! Sorry for the delay. Just returned from a road trip. Wow you were 13 in 1979...what a great year to be 13! Yes, this year was incredibly innovative and diverse. Modern music is missing that edge...that creativity. I appreciate you watching!

I specifically checked this out to see if you made mention of an album from my high school graduation year, but I sheepishly admit to having just 'discovered' recently, and that is "A Trip to Marineville" by Swell Maps. I had long heard of the band, but only just listened to, and loved their two albums, especially Marineville. Great upload, and hope all is well.

The first two albums are essential, the self-titled and Hypnotised (I think they came out on Sire in the States?). From the 3rd album onwards they veer off into a pop direction and just lacked the energy of the first two records. As a recent discovery I’m enjoying your vids - excellent taste too! You featured a lot of excellent albums. I did find a copy of The Knack a short while back at a thrift. I rarely find decent records at thrifts probably because too many folks are looking for what I'm looking for, but occasionally I get lucky! Starting out with Settings Sons? Now you have my attention :) This is my favourite Jam album and my first. I got the older ones later. I can sing along, horrendously, to every song on this album :) Oh and shout out for Unknown Pleasures. I have an original that my mom bought me when she was on holiday in the UK in 1980. Thanks Mom :) I also have that 40th anniversary version and another repress. Worth it for any of my favourites.
A few I would have included in my list:
    Madness - One Step Beyond...
    The Specials - S/T
    The Beat - S/T
    Teenage Head - S/T
Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material
Crass - Feeding of the 5000
Supertramp - Breakfast in America (I know, I know, Supertramp were huge in Canada when I was a kid)
    The Undertones - S/T
    The Cars - Candy O
    AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Gary Numan - The Pleasure Principle
The Stranglers - The Raven (not my favourite but they get in the list for every year they released an album)
    Wire - 154

    PIL - The Metal Box
    ...to name a few :)

'79 was just swarming with spectacular releases, wasn't it? I wish I was around back then to experience all the hype!
Getting to see these artists perform while they were in their prime would have been something really special.
My only regret in life is not being born earlier! Lol.
Anyway, these are some top-tier choices, Hanna! I went into this one expecting to only know a handful, seeing as how I've done next to no research on this time period. But I was surprised to see so many of my favourites pop up!
This is definitely what my collection would look like if I bothered to shop for anything beyond the last two decades...
(I'm stuck in a post-80s rut something fierce!)
Throw some Midnight Oil into the mix and you've got yourself a killer 1979! ;D
I noticed you have another video out covering 1980 as well. Just by looking at the thumbnail, I can already tell I'm gonna like your choices :) I think I'll head over to that one soon and see what other stand-outs made your year.

Welcome back, Nic! Wish I had been born earlier, too. At least we are fully enjoying and appreciating this music! I'm sure you'll be exploring more of the 70s/80s soon enough! Have to admit I haven't been exploring too many new releases this year so far. Only a couple I've picked up. I wonder if I don't listen to Midnight Oil that much anymore because my ex was really into them! Haha. 1980 was a blast, too! I'm trying to decide if I'll cover 1978 or 1981 next...or maybe even 1987 or 1988. Such decisions! Whatever I choose, it will have to be after I do a vinyl finds/new additions video! Cheers!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert We may not be able to rewind the clocks and witness those performances, but I'll settle for a good live DVD if there's one out there! At least we have those to appreciate, too!
Tell you the truth, I haven't been paying much attention to new releases either. Part of me wants to call it quits at the 2020s. There's just so much amazing stuff I need to catch up on from the last 60 years! I've been snoozing on some pretty big names. More than I care to admit!
I'm sorry to hear you're not so fond of the Oils anymore. I hope I didn't bring up any bad memories for you!
We've all been there, sadly. I'm starting to remember all the bands I've drifted apart from thanks to my ex. (AC/DC...that was a painful one! But I'm slowly coming back to them).
I guess that's the risk you run when dating someone as passionate about music as yourself. If things don't work out, then your favourite artists often pay the price :-/
If you end up doing a rundown of 1987, I'll just have to bite my lip should you decide to exclude Diesel and Dust.
It's a tough one to ignore, but I'll completely understand your reasons for doing so!
I hope they make their way back to your ears in time, my friend :) They'll be waiting for ya!

1979 was my first full year with a driver's license. This music was mesmerizing. I grew up in a college town which brought a lot of new influences to the Midwest, many of which came from overseas, and also Los Angeles and the East Coast. We were listening to anything that was not corporate or overtly commercial--this was sort of instinctual for my friends. It was the perfect era for new ideas. Americans were not hip to many international sounds. And this was the era where our awareness was broadened, truly. Just before this year, and just before I could drive, I heard Watching the Detectives on a transistor radio on a walk on a calm and warm summer day. I stopped and sat down on the curb and just listened thinking, "What the heck is this?" It was just so new and , to me, it seemed as if it had come out of nowhere, derivative of nothing, completely original. I believe it was coming from the Washington University radio station in University City, MO, Anyway, such were many moments like that in my youth. A few years later, and I have no idea, what exact year, I heard a song called Love Plus One. And again I just stopped and listened. The song made me aware of the ascendancy of things new and wonderful and unexpected, even happy. Of course, MTV contributed to this to a large degree. From around 1977 to maybe 1986 I was often pleased more than put off by the music all around me. In your videos you mention so many good sounds. I've no idea where I came across your content, but some of it is like a lovely journey back in time.

Hi Hannah. You beauty you mentioned Wire's 3rd album 154 and it is one of rare beauty. Its not only their best but so great it makes my top 10 albums of all. Guitars with regal distortion and lush layers of synth, its full of power, danger, doubt and beauty. And you spoke of Emmylou Harris and i used to work at WEA Records in the early 80s and i was lucky enough to meet her and her daughter. It was about 83 and i met a few bands but meeting and talking with her was very surreal. Lastly a mention of 4 brilliant albums of 1979
1.-DEVO Duty Now For The Future ( their greatest of all)
    2-The Crack- The Ruts
    3-New Values-Iggy Pop

Nice to see a young person who loves The Damned ("Fan Club" is my favorite of theirs), Elvis Costello, etc. As far 1979 goes, check out "Squeezing Out Sparks" by Graham Parker and The Rumour. Relating to another of your videos, their follow-up "The Up Escalator" is a classic that never got its due.

  • @charlielenk1677
    @charlielenk1677 Год назад

I really like these videos, the thrill of seeing overlaps between someone else's collection and mine never wears off.
1979 albums I listened to incessantly in 1979:
    1. Talking Heads, Fear Of Music
    2. Blondie, Eat To The Beat
    3. B-52s, debut
    4. Elvis Costello, Armed Forces
    5. Graham Parker/Rumour, Squeezing Out Sparks (came with a bonus single, Mercury Poisoning/I Want You Back)
List is short because I was a college student with a tiny record-buying budget, as did most of my fellow students which made most "So what's your favorite new album?" conversations very short. That and the closest FM station (WPDH in Poughkeepsie) wasn't yet playing much new out-of-the-way music. As a result I wouldn't cross paths with so many of the albums listed here until 1980 (London Calling, Entertainment), 1981 (Singles Going Steady, The Specials), 1982 (Machine Gun Etiquette, Undertones) or later.
(Also in 79 I was still listening to a lot of 70s folk-rock - Jackson Browne, Eagles, No Nukes - and was waffling about shifting paradigms so completely from that to punk. It was London Calling that eventually got me off the fence and I've stayed on the punk/post-punk side ever since.)
PS I'm wondering if since this video you've gotten A Different Kind Of Tension. Overall a great album, although the longer songs on the second side do get a little repetitious.

From the moment you mentioned Japan, David Sylvian and Brian Eno, two long-term collaborators came to my mind, Robert Fripp who in 1979 released his first solo album "Exposure" with great guest musicians and Can's Holger Czukay his second solo "Movies".
At the top of my favorites that year is the debut of This Heat. This amazing experimental UK band, was based on the greatest moments of krautrock and although they added a lot of punk elements they had so limited success... Weird, beautiful music!!!

Hi Hanna, 1979 was such a great year for albums. I'm really pleased you mentioned Nick Lowe as a producer, his credits include The Pretenders, EC, Grahm Parker and of course, The Damned. You should seek out Dave Edmunds' Repeat When Necessary which was recorded during the night while Labour of Lust was recorded during the day... It was a nice surprise that you showed Bowie's Lodger, a very underrated album... One album I beg you to look out for is The Undertones debut which has a Ramones feel to it. The re-issue (only reissued a year after original release) is the best to get as it includes the singles Teenage Kicks and Get Over You. Hope you are keeping well, Richard

Yes, I definitely want to find some Undertones on vinyl. I'll try to find the reissue version. I'm adding it to my list! Hope I can find it at a record show! :-) Hope all is well with you, my friend.

Just thought I'd leave another comment or two on this one before I head over to your next video :)
There's just so much to discuss about 1979!
As a huuuge Cars fan, I was really starting to question your sanity when they didn't make an appearance.
You can't call yourself the queen of power pop and not mention Candy-O when the opportunity arises!
It's a good thing I waited until the end of the video... (Don't worry, I haven't got a physical copy of the album either!)
I've just been racking up the stream count on Spotify until I get a hold of one. We do what we can to stay sane, right?
For me, the true highlight of Candy-O is the synth-work. It really gives you the impression you're flying through space!
Not that I've had any former experience up there, but I'm pretty sure this is the soundtrack I would want to have accompanying me on such a mission!
It's so hard to pick a favourite track, though. Some days it's a toss-up between 'Dangerous Type' and the title track, but I think 'Let's Go' takes the cake as my all-time number one. I mean, c'mon, what a way to start the album!
What's your favourite tune, Hanna? ^^

    • @TheOmahaIntrovert

Thanks, Nic! Oh yeah, I couldn't leave out Candy-O! I wanted to borrow my boyfriend's copy for the video, but his house is undergoing renovations so I couldn't grab it at the time! I think "It's All I Can Do" is my favorite track. I just love the harmonies on it!

Hello Hanna 1979 was a good year for all genres of music. I turned 19 that year. I spent some nights in the discos, and disco peaked in that year. Donna Summer was queen.of Disco. Bad Girls and all that. I had the B52s debut album. Rock Lobster was a popular track. The Clash released London Calling, which is a classic album. I agree with you, about the Damned being a favorite. From their first single New Rose in 1976 through to 1979, they couldn't do no wrong. I found they got a little boring by the mid 1980s. They scored a number 1 song titled Eloise in the UK. Gary Numans song Cars was a big hit in the USA. The Cramps I absolutely love. I have the album you showed.. I saw Cheap Trick play here in NZ in 1979.They were so loud. They rocked and shook the old town hall where they played here in Auckland city. I like their cover of Ain't that a shame. We had a group called the Dudes, and they were huge in 1979. Che k

The only faves of mine you haven't mentioned are Police's Reggatta de Blanc, The Specials first album , Joe Jackson's Look Sharp, Prince's first album (the sexiest record I've ever heard) and a knockout solo album by Ellen Foley (Meatloaf's backing singer) called Night Out with stellar contributions from Mick Ronson and Ian Hunter - you should check it out.
I actually bought Damn The Torpedoes by wondering into a record shop without knowing anything about it and just thinking he looked cool on the cover with his Fender Telecaster. I wasn't disappointed.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Ahh, Thx! Yea, my copy of "Infammible Material" is def a reissue for sure! A fellow punk/vinyl HS buddy of mine will sometimes come down to visit from up north and we'll roll thru Inland Empire to DR. STRANGE Records to see what's what and that's when I saw the reissue of SLF and knew I had to grab it cuz even some reissues are expensive. Yea, THE DICKIES are soooo fun and silly! I can tell that you're a legit RAMONES fan from some vids of yers that I've watched so I think if you dive into THE DICKIES, you'll thoroughly enjoy your stay! I would recommend "THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING DICKIES" and "DAWN OF THE DICKIES". Their best work IMO!!!

Hey Hannah, my favorite year in music is 1966, but 1979 is a close second. I think I even did a 1979 Podcast once, long ago. It was THE year for power pop. It was truly a fantastic year. There are just so many meaningful albums for me. Wings' Back To The Egg, Bram Tchakovsky, Ian Gomm, Moon Martin, Squeeze, Split Enz... The list is almost infinite. Great video! Take care...

Hi Tim! Always fabulous to hear from you. 1966 is another stunning year indeed. Mid-to-late 60s for me, then late 70s and early 80s I love the most for music! I am recently getting into Bram Tchaikovsky. Moon Martin is one I need to sample more, too. Very cool you did a 1979 podcast as well! Thank you for stopping by, as always!

Oh yay, XTC! 🤩👍 I'd known them only by name for about 15 years, until I finally heard 'Making Plans For Nigel' on a Punk & Wave compilation album I bought in the mid 90's. Another 8 years later, there'd be a live clip of their cover version of Rita Coolidge's 'Statue Of Liberty' on a DVD I bought, but it was really only in 2021 that I finally gave them a proper listen, after their name had kept popping up around me everywhere and all the time, and I did not regret it either! 😁👍 I'll have to resume that trip one day, as I've gotten 'only' as far as their 'English Settlement' album 😊 Similar process when when finally checking out the B-52's properly for the first time in 2019, whom I then fell in love with, too 😍

You have an excellent batch of albums that does sum up why this year was so good. I can't believe your missing Candy-O though. I forgot that Petty's Damn The Torpedos was dropped that year. That's one of my favorites from his early period and is an essential. The Talking Heads...I can't make up my mind about that one. Kris at Dixielandfarm did a video on the Talking Heads and the way sums it up is the way I feel. There are number of songs on each of their albums that are just alright but when they have a hit, they truly have a hit. I grabbed that same Buzzcocks on CD some time back.

Thanks, Paul! Yeah, I have 4 other Cars records but for some reason I'm still ashamedly missing Candy-O! I saw Kris' video on the Talking Heads, too, hehe! One of their albums I can't get into much. I think it's called Naked and it's a later period album. Yeah, Damn the Torpedos is a damn near perfect rock record! I love the album cover, too. Glad to hear you have Singles Going Steady as well. What an impressive comp! :-)

Yet again, a great selection of records from the year in question by such a young (...compared to me) person! Absolutely all my faves are in there.....well almost - you need to include Magazine's Secondhand Daylight (ah yes, you did pick this one - I started typing this comment too soon!)...oh and Join Hands by the Banshees...and maybe Regatta de Blanc by The Police, and Cut by The Slits, and Squeezing Out Sparks by Graham Parker and the Rumour (probably their best), and Coming Up For Air by Penetration, and Metal Box by PIL. You are quite right, Fear of Music is the absolute greatest TH's LP, as hopefully you'll eventually discover...and Armed Forces is also EC's best! This is so good! And you pronounced David Bowie's name correctly - your smooth american accent makes this sound as naturally perfect as it is! You took me right back to my whole life in the sixth form (which is the two penultimate two school years before going on to university, etc. for those viewers who are not English!). Thanks for taking me back to such a joyous time - these records don't just contain music, they're sort of erm,... notches on the belt of life - gosh, that sounds so corny (sorry!)! Btw, if you're really going down the collectors line, you need a copy of Armed Forces with the fold out rear sleeve (but mines not for sale at any price, I'm afraid!). All the best. Cheers!

Hey Halloween Jack! I appreciate you pulling up my 1979 video! Since the filming of this, I have picked up many more of these I could have added. I even now have Magazine's Secondhand Daylight on vinyl instead of just CD! Join Hands by Siouxsie is very high on my want list. Having a very hard time finding it! I have also since picked up Squeezing Out Sparks by Graham Parker. Also have since added Coming up for Air by Penetration and Metal Box in later videos! :-) I'll look for a copy of Armed Forces with the fold out sleeve! Don't think I've seen one. Cheers!

@@TheOmahaIntrovert Good luck with the search, Hannah. Sorry, didn't intend to sound mean if I did, the fold out sleeve version holds special memories for me! Pleased that you also selected Quiet Life by Japan. That one is also my favourite of theirs, I got to see them three times in'80 and 81. They got a bad ride by the music press at the time, I think mainly because of their first two LP's which were perhaps a little immature if that's the right word, and also because they couldn't be easily classified into one of the mainstream movements at the time, not punk, not new wave, not anything really (although I really dislike putting artists into those kind of boxes, which are basically press inventions of course!). Keep enjoying your music to the max!! All the best!

Broken English is a great record, Marianne Faithfulll was really suffering with her heroin addiction and she thought she was going to die, she though this would be her last album. I love Marianne, last time I saw her she was relying on a walking stick, she looked really old, it was the first time I saw her and registered that shes now an elderly woman. Before the Poison is another great album (written with PJ Harvey, Damon Alban and Nick Cave)

The Jam was absolutely spot on for me too. I'm not quite as much a fan of 'Armed Forces' as I prefer the albums either side of (and if you get to 1986 - do check out 'Blood & Chocolate'). 1979 was the year I graduated high school. It was also about that time I was learning more about New Wave and Punk courtesy of some of my musician friends as well as the ABC-TV show, "Friday's." That show had appearances by The Jam, Clash, Boomtown Rats, Rockpile, and many other great bands. But I was still into a lot of more mainstream groups as I grew up on 70's AM radio. Electric Light Orchestra released "Discovery", Bee Gees - "Spirits Having Flown" (not my favorite of theirs, but I've been a Gibb Brothers fan for over 40 years), Badfinger - "Airwaves", George Harrison - "George Harrison", ABBA - "Voulez-Vous". I have both the U.S. and UK versions of The Records lp along with every Jam album on vinyl (they also appeared on American Bandstand). Thanks for another great video, Hanna! It brought back lots of fond memories of my days becoming an adult (although I still don't think I ever did). ;) Craig in North Carolina.

All my absolute favorites are on your list, and if I was going to do a top 20 or so, I'd maybe add End of the Century, Fine Art of Surfacing, and Cool For Cats. I also have to consider The Clash s/t North American issue (put out in 1979) as on my list, even though the UK version was in '77.That's THE debut for me.
