Storm Cooker, a review of the Trangia stove 25 with a spirit burner.

- While the storm Dennis raged through Sweden I went out to put the Trangia Storm Cooker to the test and once and for all determine if it could live up to it's name. As it turns out the storm took down several trees and my camera tripod but it couldn't put out the flame in the burner as you can see in the video.
I cook up some lunch and list the pros and cons of the stove and give my verdict after having used the same cook system for more than 40 years.
As you can see I bought a new burner since I wanted the new model of simmer ring. The old one is still working, but is now part of another cooking system of mine.
Since this this video was uploaded, the storm cooker has been awarded Christmas present of the year 2020 in Sweden. "Årets julklapp 2020"
I hope you find the video useful and thank you for watching!

Well, what about that, the Storm Cooker has been appointed "Christmas present of the year" in Sweden! It makes lot more sense to me than the useless gadgets from previous years.
I didn't touch Trangia for many years, preferring to go down the ultralight route and making my life very frustrating in the process. Eventually I shed all my pre-conceptions and re-evaluated what I wanted from an outdoor life. I bought a 25 series and have come to realise the absolute genius of John Johnsson, in launching Trangia. 2 half-globes, back to back and a burner that weighs as much as a hand-grenade.
80 years on and although many of us belly-ache about the shortcomings of a 1950's design, it is STILL the yardstick by which everything since has been measured. It is the only system that I feel safe to cook with inside a tent (albeit with gas). When lashing wind and rain have driven me into the confines of a good tent, I always start musing on how the fundamental Trangia design has never yet been bested.
I'm totally with you on that one. I'm not saying that it's the perfect system, just that I have yet to try a better one. Cheers!
Great video! I have had the 25 for years. Food tends to stick to the pan but that’s not a big problem. The best thing is the reliability. You can leave it on the shelf for years then use it with 100 percent confidence if you need it. Very safe and terrific for power outages.
Very true! The non-stick in my pan has all but given up by now, but it's mainly due to me using metal tools to poke around in it, can't really blame it on Trangia. Apart from that it has proven to be more or less bomb proof. Cheers!
Wonderful information. I think I will have to invest in this cook set. I normally go camping with a brother of mine, but since his passing, I have not been back in the woods overnight. I live in the "Piney Woods" of Southeast Texas and have ample wilderness areas available with more than adequate resources for my outing. I have seen you use this cook set in other videos and thought that it was a mix and match set. I have been planning on going out soon, but at present, the weather here is unbearable with daily heat indexes over 105 degrees farenheit. This coming week is supposed to cool down a little with lower humidity. I pray I can get out this next week and reminisce about the many wonderful adventures my brother and I shared. Thanks again for a wonderful video. God bless brother.
I'm sorry for the loss of your brother but glad to hear that you will bring him with you in your memories on your outings.
I hope the weather will settle down more comfortable levels so you can enjoy it again. Take care, cheers!
I ordered the 25-8 UL/HA last night. I'm a city girl but living in a smaller town surrounded by logging roads to explore with my son. At 68 years old I expect the Trangia to last my son's life time. I'm very impressed with the fuel versatility and the basic design.
I hope that you'll get many good exploration trips together. Cheers!
I’ve an outdoor business and have group cooked on Trangia for customers
Everything cooking i own is either stick stove or Trangia consistent
I use one of these at least once a week all year round
I do use some gas but only for Bikepacking where fires are not allowed in my areas and liquid fuel is too bulky
In short. Forget the boil time rubbish, get something reliable that works
Yes, it takes a bit of practice but so does anything else … and this will always work
I’ve used my HA pots on fires, no issue, I’ve got 25 and 27 plus mini ,,, they just work after about 10 years use.
Thank you for sharing your experiences, Mark. I totally agree, it's a very reliable kit, close to being both fool and bomb proof. Cheers!
I am a new subscriber and enjoying your channel. I have been camping for 60 years. I have used camp fires, wood stoves, white gas stoves, pressurized gas stoves, DIY alcohol stoves and recently the Trangia. This year I changed up my cooking kit to be revolve around the Trangia Storm Cooker. From what I can see so far your evaluation and review of the system is spot on. I'm having fun learning a new cook set and eating well in the process.
Thank you and welcome to the channel. It sounds to me you found a perfect mix, you can't go wrong with good fun and good food. Cheers!
Nice! I have a 27, and a mini. The 27 I've had for 25 years and it's never let me down and boiled water for tea and cooked proper meals. I love that you're not limited in what you can cook, and it works when it's windy. I bought the gas kit and was amazed how quick it is.
It's a great, well thought out design.
True, it's a great kit and for me it's the benchmark when it comes to all stoves. Cheers!
Waiting for my new Trangia 27, just in the mail ATM. Can't wait to try it out. Seems like it is very popular in Europe. Here in Canada it is actually hard to find a place that sells them. Seems to be such a realistic system to own.
All the best.
I hope you'll like it and get many good outings with it. Cheers!
I have had the exact same set for years. Never let me down
True Mike, can't go wrong with it.
I have a trangia 27, its very good. I have others but this is very good cant be beaten on price and ability, to cook, bokl in most conditions.
I haven't found any better system yet, and when you consider it's basically looked the same for 70+ years it's impressing. Cheers!
Love the video and appreciate your sage advice and humor, too. I've subscribed to your Channel now. I bought the Trangia 25 based on your recommendation and am looking forward to using it soon. I've been to Sweden a couple of times in the past (sadly, more than 10 years ago) and enjoy seeing all of the nature you show. Thanks for making videos and sharing them with all of us.
I hope you'll enjoy your Trangia and that you get the opportunity to use it in Sweden someday. Cheers!
I read Everclear is a good fuel/wound wash/hot toddy ingredient. Fab video ✨
Lol, sounds like it fits the bushcraft profile with multiple uses for your equipment. Cheers!
Well done, thank you
Thank you !
i picked up 2of these kits for 2p0unds each at boot fair markets brand new no kettle though after watching your video i have a better understanding of how these work you have renewed my interest in trying them out am def.going to get the gas conversion.thanks redswede my friend and stay safe ken from northern england
Thank you Ken! 20 punds each, thats a good bargain you did there, congrats. I have been satisfied with the spirit burner since I got it but after a couple of times this winter with -15 C and rough winds I'm actually leaning towards getting a gas burner for the really cold days since the spirit burner takes an awful long time to get my coffee done. I hope you'll find some other content that is useful for you on the channel. Cheers!
Thank u
You're welcome.
Love the Trangia, mine isn't even twenty years old! Good to see it in it's native Swedish habitat :)
Good to hear. If your Trangia is in it's teens you can say taht you tried and tested it thoroughly. Cheers! :)
I like your style :) Respect ✊🏼
I appreciate that. Cheers!
Hi, here in Australia I live in a caravan & rely on my Trangia 27 quite a lot & also for motorcycle touring. It is a fantastic cooking system using fuel available everywhere here. I add the 10% of water for soot reduction.
Hi Sven, btw that almost look like a swedish name. I given the the water mix some thought but I don't think that the soot from the burner is much of a problem, but that's probably because I compare to when I use conifer wood as fuel. That doesn't just get black but sticky too. Cheers!
@@RedswedeOutdoors Hi Redswede, yes it is a very Swedish name & not that common here in Australia. At least I get to cook with gear from the home country.
I bought the Trangia 25 Aluminium. Great kit when I started hiking.
With hindsight I wish I had got the Titanium version, as the frying pan is not really non stick and it’s a bit heavy.
Thanks for sharing! To be honest I have never seen a Titanium set from Trangia, the Ultra Light is still made of aluminum, but I guess there could be knock offs made from titanium that could fit the bill. As for non stick pans, the only ones I've tried that's worth while cooking in is a well seasoned cast iron skillet and it's not really an option if weight is a determining factor. Cheers!
@@RedswedeOutdoors sorry for my mistake, I double checked I meant the hard anodised aluminium. It’s the same weight as the ultra lightweight aluminium version but the coating makes it more non stick.
Yes, it's a shame that the webshop doesn't sell the pans seperate. It would be more doable to buy just the pan you want than a whole new kit for just one part. See you around. :)
Great video! I bought the 27 and love it. I even use it often here at the house.
Thanks Jim! I have been tempted several times to get the smaller set for my solohikes but there has always been more urgent priorities so far. Around the house I mainly used it when a power out interfered with my coffee break.
Redswede Outdoors
Just use the larger set and save the money. More coffee for you! 😉
I like the way you think, and besides my set has a larger kettle.
Awesome video. I’ve always dismissed the Trangia. What a fool! Now going to purchase the 27. Trouble is I’ll be nearly 100 by the time it hits 40 years 😂
I can't see why you shouldn't be hiking just because you turn 100 ;-) I hope you like it as much as I do, Cheers!
Use the more compact steel military version of it nowadays but this one you are showing has been our main kitchen for many many trips we did with my wife free camping all over Europe. Very nice video
From what I've heard they are hard to get your hands on but they look like rock solid mess kits. Cheers!
@@RedswedeOutdoors Its not so hard if you are already in Sweden and interested but just like lavvus it will be harder and harder.. here is a group a friend created just about this Swedish mess kit, maybe of interest : Swedish M40messkit owners Take care
Very good video. Northern Michigan, Lake Huron side here. I’m trying to decide what size to buy. Conclusion, i will be using it on my Trike so I’m going all out on the 25. I’m 63 and my back is bad, so I might as well eat good before I die. LOL My son may need it when I’m gone the way the world is going. Peace !
A wise decision, life is to short to settle for bad food. I hope you will have many good meals outdoor on your travels. Cheers and all the best!
Very nice video on the trangia. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have just purchased the 25 doussal stove kit. I started years ago with the mini T-28 and then the 27 UH set. Thanks again for the video.
Great to hear! How do you think the duossal compare to the aluminium kit. Is it worth the extra weight? Thanks for the feedback. Cheers!
I will let you know as soon as Amazon delivers it. My long treks are over now. I was just outside of Flagstaff for forty years. The Grand Canyon was where i did most of my backpacking. I loved the Grand Canyon. It was stunning place to hike. Thank You for the reply.
@@bdr1968 I can see that the Grand Canyon was a favourite place for backpacking. I wish I that we had had more time there when we took our coast to coast road trip four years ago. It was a breathtaking place and I got the feeling that it was from another world. I would like to go back some day and stay a while longer next time. We made a short stop in Flagstaff to and I liked the town, nice people and beautiful scenery.
Hello RedSweede
If you make it back to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon again someday. Hiking down the South Kaibab Trail for a stretch is awe inspiring. Careful though it is a bear hiking back to the rim. Which is true for all below the rim trail. The first time I hiked down the first mile to Oh Ah Point is an easier hike. A more tranquil side of the canyon is the North Rim. It was my spouses and my favorite place to camp and take in the views.
Keep up the great videos.
Brent
another major advantage to the stormcookers is that they are very stable and difficult to tip over, unlike most backpacking stoves. i've even used mine when boating with no problems. the only problem i've had is finding fuel that does not produce soot, i wish the tax laws were different so we could buy pure ethanol, but pure ethanol is considered to be booze here in the usa, so it's ridiculously expensive to use as fuel.
The stability is a major advantage, as you could see my camera tripod fell over the stove and it didn't budge in spite of that. I can see it working well even in a boat just as long as the surface isn't too slippery.
As for the taxes on booze they are even higher in Sweden so I can relate to that. I personally use methylated spirit and the soot isnt too bad for the pots and kettels. The frying pan gets a greater soot layer unfortunately.
Thanks for your input and I hope you have lots of good times outdoor. Cheers!
Denatured alcohol doesn’t leave any soot. It’s available in home improvement stores. You can also use the yellow bottle Heet gas line treatment without any soot problems. That’s available in the auto section.
Heet is mostly methanol which is more toxic. I use denatured which is only a small part methanol. Still need to be careful of the fumes and getting it on your hands
Nice one thanks
Thanks mate!
I use this stove and it is Brilliant 👍
Thanks for sharing 😎
ATB... Subscribed 👍
Yes it's really a good stove kit, no wonder the design hasn't changed much since the beginning. Thanks for the sub!
Hey man, thanks for the video. You convinced me to buy this. I am wondering, does all the alcohol have to finish burning before packing up the spirit burner?
As long as you have the rubber O-ring intact in the lid you can store left over spirit in the burner. The greatest risk of damage it is if you put out the flame with the lid or close it before the burner has cooled down. (I hate to admit it but I'm speeking of own experience..)
