I believe that carving is a skill that can be learned, but art is a gift. With skill I can be a good carver, but with the gift of art I can be a great artist too.

As you said, my only gift is being to easily see things in three dimensions. But I had to learn to draw, design and carve. Everyone must develop a learning and work ethic. We are naturally lazy and must overcome this to be proficient at anything!

I've always believed that hard work and lots of practice can make you a great carver. A God given talent, hard work and lots of practice will take you to the moon in your carving.

I think all talents are God-given gifts, but I believe He gave us a brain to hone our talents into a skilled art form.

My mother always told me better to try and fail than do nothing at all. At least you will learn something.

For my part, I work very hard and it's regular practice that helps me improve! I even find myself bringing differences to my basic model, you have to trust yourself and dare, I believe that this is one of the ways in which you can surprise yourself and gain in confidence!

Well said good sir! Side note... I love that "take your vitamins" hasn't been abandoned. It's long since been a staple now, at least in my eyes hahaha. Also, super pumped for the new book! Congrats!

Very good Alec ..God can give people gift ..but unless you work at it ..it doesnt work ..I met a young man on vacation one day who took a carving class and his first piece was amazing to me ..I sat and talked to him and he told me his dad was a artist and the carving seemed natural to him ..But there was only one problem ..He told me he didnt like to carve wood ..He liked to do other art ..So you see God can gift you with special skills .But a lot of people if not interested ..Wont go on to do it

I'm a classically trained oil painter. I've attended hundreds of art classes and seminars. I've done it all from clay sculpting to graphic design and carving for me has been the most humbling, challenging and rewarding.

That’s true! I tell my son that often when he gets down on himself with his guitar skills. Practice/skill beats talent everytime.

Alec. Very insightful observations - especially for a young guy. This thought process of maximizing results by combining diligent work and practice with whatever skills we’re gifted with can be applied to any artistic pursuit. Great food for thought - thanks .

Well stated sir! We are all blessed with something. Some more than others, interest in something is the seed. How you nurture and develop and make that seed grow is up to you.
I’m exactly like you. I see things naturally…but have to put in the work to develop the fine polish on that skill. But isn’t that part of our journey???

Art can be learned. Betty Edward’s and her book Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain really opened up new opportunities for me with my power carving and pyrography.

Exactly…. One can be gifted by God but not improve upon it just as one can have a passion for something and work hard to improve it…. Either way Christ is King❤️❤️❤️

I believe Ernest Hemingway's best defines the issue about skill and giftedness.. To make something takes both skill and some giftedness... What is most important than both is said to have " Built-in Bullshit meter to define greatness vs mediocrity...

I do believe that we find things we enjoy and being we enjoy it we do better than one that would just like to do something. But yes there are those are just good without trying . Dang unfair. But from young they tell ya life ain't fair. Just do your best and enjoy it.
