In the future, a handy trick for testing infrared LED's is to use a cell phone with a built in camera, just use the viewfinder to look at the LED's, and you should see the bright light being emitted. Its also useful for testing remote controls and even observing the pulse signaling use by IT transceivers.
It's no wonder the IR-sensor of the toilet-flush-thing isn't working like that, when you removed the housing you also removed a little opaque black plate that fitted around the LED's. Without this plate, the IR sensor is in direct line-of-sight with the IR LED's. That will certainly create a false signal.
@EEVblog For the flushing thing, may be you need to cover the direct path from the IR LEDs to the recieving LED with the provided plastic shroud (visible at 5:31)? Worth a try may be?
I have one of those eTrex Legends! It's a very handy little GPS unit. One time when flying and the aviation-specific GPS in the plane with the external antenna kept losing the satellite signal, I got out my Legend and put it up on the dash board, and used it to fly lines of longitude more accurately (down to 5 decimal places of longitude) than I was with the big expensive piece of junk. I also have a handlebar mount to carry it on my motorcycle, and can use it to stream the GPS data to the laptop so I can run a moving map for road trips. I even stuck it inside a model airplane with track logging turned on so I could upload the entire 3D flight into Google Earth. The only thing I don't like about it is that it has only 8MB of on-board memory and has no expansion slot for a micro SD card like some of the other eTrex units. Oh, and the data transfer over the 9-pin serial cable is painfully slow when loading map segments onto it.
I'm sure he would have, had he known it was an electronics issue. for all he knew, it could have been a wiring fault or a plumbing/coolant issue. australia has pretty strict laws about fiddling with stuff that you aren't licensed to fiddle with.
I still have one of those connectors in my parts box (I bought two). It was great for uploading geocache waypoints. The official Garmin cable was way overpriced (of course).
Actually, it was a pretty good representation of a Southern accent. ;) Please do an entire video of you trying to use the American accent. I could use a laugh.
I use the older version of this pokeys (the 55) to control the front panel of my cnc lathe. It allowed me to use the original keyboard with it's keyboard scanning feature. Works pretty well.
Ha. People complain to you about the Australia/Austria joke, getting first/last name in the right order, and clearing your throat? People need to relax. Your videos are great. I especially like your tutorials. I've learnt so much about electronics since subscribing to your channel.
those security torx/hex screws are daft. just jam a screwdriver in there and snap the nipple off, then use a normal torx/hex wrench. works for me anyway :P
'I have never got anything to do with toilets before..' Prepare yoursefl to be deluged with singing toilet seats, robotic bum cleaners, smell detecting freshener sprays (yes they exist), electronic toilet roll dispensers et al.
I've been starting to make my own PCBs and using SMT components to do some cool simple stuff. Can I send something like that in and maybe get some feedback on my techniques?
Is that a "list of unusual words" website you have up there? (28:44) can't wait for the next video to hear some of those! Another fine smorgasbord of goodies this Monday (There's a word for ya :P) Fantastic MBM as always!
that little PoKeys board would be excellent for a home security system if bodge-wired to use 48v power over ethernet, with a regulator to give 5v, as i could use it to trigger magnetic door catches once a correct code is put into a keypad or a correct RFID chip is detected. also a vibration sensor could detect if someone is attempting to force the door, raise the alarm and notify me by email or pager etc :)
Dave, I have an eTrex legend that is in worse condition, a few dead lines in the LCD and the LCD itself sometimes go intermittent and I have to slap it a few times to bring the screen back. My lanyard strap mount is busted in the same way. I got it for five bucks at a Hamfest including a Car adapter and a serial cable. That is NOT a genuine connector as I have genuine accessories and the connectors match the color of the Legen and are keyed. PM me an email address for a photo Dave.
I seen on a study that people and ALL mamals take about 17 seconds to pee. So stand in front of it for about 17 seconds. The stuff these people study.......did they hide out in bathrooms ?
Etrex Legend ! What is it you say ? "Don't turn it on, tear it apart !" I hope you managed to save the Psion Series 2 that you tore apart the other week, it is much more worthy to be kept thant that Garmin !
LOL I'm italian and I have to say italians are pretty bad with electronics. I had to replace 20 euros worth of caps in an italian made portable turntable from the 60s, they were all leaking.
my gradpa has one of the recent models of these gps'es with a backlit screen, I modded it and added a 3ds joystick since my grandpa has really big hands, he was really happy, :)
@28:30 and this is the Moment where the Trojan-Horse Device took over the LAN, scans and sniffs als the traffic and reports back to the command server in slovenia. :) System on a chip makes dropping remote network probes real cheap and easy. :)
No joke for real my cousin went to high school with a dude named Richard Head i think i went to school with like his nephews or something his name was Hank Head Jr

I wonder if the filter you discarded from the front of the sensor board might have prevented ambient light from overwhelming the sensor.
7:50 - I'm guessing you're getting LOTS of light leakage, it being out of the package!
I think that was the best mailbag in a while. I am pretty impressed with the speed at which the temp/humidity logger was setup.
Glad you love Canada Dave, we love you too!

06:07 - Dave, are you sure it measures distance by time period? In my opinion it's most likely uses intensity of reflected light, not a time delay.
They still have your poscope hosted with your last temp and humidity. WE DEMAND TEMP UPDATES!!!!
You may find that the flush counts the number users and flushes after so many uses or after a time out after being used once

The temp sensor may just have taken a little while to auto-compensate for self heating.
That maybe why it was a bit out at first.
I bought a stack of cables from him a few years ago.
Worked well, although fragile in design.

hi i am from slovenia and the fire extinguish is a day of fighters in slovenia
The connector on the pokeys looks to be offset so as to allow insertion of a battery?
there were three clock devices for LPC :)
"every monday is like christmas time" - the only man who ever said that
Whats the audio for on the EZ-Flush?

That pokeys device would be very handy if it didn't need winblows and .net to program it.
Is there no ISP header to program the micro?
could you kindly say at what part of the video the private invormation is?

I thought you can see infrared leds through a camera. In your video I couldnt see that..
Some cameras have better IR filters than others,
The COSM interface is now called Xively
At 6:10 you can hear windows starting in the background

Nice video. Does the Pokeys56E use C for programming like Arduino or python (raspberry pi)?

Perhaps a read of the manual might have got it working...:)
Nice job on publishing someone's private email address on RUclips :)
I was going to send you a puppy, but I don't want to see you dissect it.
