The secret to this series' success is that it is not really humor. It is serious fiction disguised as satire. These books touch on many dark themes that will make you quite sad if you stop to think about them. Brilliant series.

Yeah, i really don’t understand this narrative about Dungeon crawler carl.
It’s so backward for me. I feel like it needs the Humor to not be like the most grimdark thing in the history of everything.

The audiobooks are AMAZING. The best narrator ever. They are such a joy to listen to while I work. I agree that this type of book is a great palate cleanser. It is also fair to say that you have to be an RPG fan to love the genre.

This series has grown from a cheesy guilty pleasure of mine to possibly my favorite series ever, about to overtake stormlight (depending on book 5). The book series is basically if a silly South Park episode slowly turned into Avengers Endgame over the course of multiple books.

I also don't like absurd humor in books. But I don't think that this book is about the humor. I see it more as a satire and social commentary. And it reminds me of the Hunger games a lot

I'm glad you gave the books a chance. Like you, I had spent the last couple years presuming litRPG was not for me. However, things got a bit heavy in life so - like you even suggest here - I started listening to the the audio books on my long car drives back and forth between states (here in the US).
I have now been converted and I love this series. Though, to be fair, I think a huge part of the appeal for me is in the BRILLIANT narration.
On the same note, I needed to take a break from writing my big epic fantasy series and have instead shifted to working on my own litRPG series - HUMAN FALVOR - as it is serving as something of a psychological buffer from the weight of life events in my creative efforts.

Contrary to you, I love Terry Pratchett, and also don't mind humour at all in my fantasy. Loved Piers Anthony, loved Robert Aspirin, so there's that. Still you didn't say a single word that would make this series more appealing to me. Think I'll gladly sit this one out.

While all opinions are subjective, some of the booktube darlings are objectively flawed, and it's glaring when reviewers do not mention any of these flaws in their reviews. Worse js wjen tjey drop a 5 star review on top of that amd name it one of their greatest series of all time.😅...

The reality tv aspect has been a trope of webnobels for a while now (like in Omniscient Reader Viewpoint or The Tutorial Is Too Hard).
The humor is definitely rarer, these kind of doomsday series usually take themselves fairly seriously.

I don't care about video games, so I didn't think this series would be for me. But I've read the first 5 books now and really liked them because Jeff Hayes is so good at narrating them. I don't think I would like the series if I was only reading them. At this point, I'm mostly interested in Carl's interactions with the world outside the dungeon.

Yeah, I feel like it is more about mental health and social commentary than fun and absurd. The fun and absurd is the coping method of Princess Donut and some of the others, more so than the whole book. I'd say something like Orconomics (a former SPFBO winner) is also a satire but again the humor isn't the point, the social commentary is the point and the humor is part of making that point (and I'd also recommend that book, but maybe not for LoaV).
