My husband has a 25 yr. Old Ford Focus. The power steering pump went out Saturday. He got on youtube found a video on replacing it, bot a pump at autozone and is replacing it himself. He's slow, so it may take a couple of days but he's 83. 😮 He always says " People do that and I'm a people so I can do it."

Another great way to save is to DIY your own salad dressings, seasoning mixes, baking mixes and other condiments. An added benefit is that you know and can control the ingredients. I found a great recipe for ranch dressing made from ingredients I keep on hand that tastes better than store bought AND I can pronounce all the ingredients. 😊

Yep! Our washing machine stopped working last week and it was $132 just for a technician to come out and look at it. We were lucky that it only needed a small part that came in about 4 days, but all together spent $330. MUCH cheaper than buying a new one.

Good for you for trying to fix your fridge! I do the same thing. I've fixed my oven about 4 times, my fridge several times and my dishwasher twice. I did everything by looking it up on You Tube. It's WAY too expensive to go out and buy something new right now.

Great encouragement! I had a time when my fridge conked out, the car conked out and the AC conked out all in the same week. Chaos! When the new fridge had problems 3 years later, I RUclips'd the fix and did it myself - and changed out the igniters on my wall oven 3 times and fixed the dishwasher that wouldn't drain and replaced all the wheels in the rack. It is remarkable both how disposable they intend appliances to be these days... and how it is relatively easy and inexpensive to fix most items yourself. I don't try to repair cars though. I figure this gal has to draw a line somewhere. lol Good luck with your repairs!

I am with you on that. The car is also where I draw the line. I once tried to replace a timing belt and water pump. I did manage to disassemble quite a bit but then didn’t have the right tools to proceed. I had to call a mobile mechanic!

Our central air just went out and needed Freon…well this administration banned the import and export and production of Freon…says it releases CO2….the most efficient refrigerant. So now there’s a shortage and the cost to find and replace the Freon was $3,000. just for refrigerant. So we got a new central air unit….basic model with a newer less effective refrigerant …$6,000. BUT starting in 2025 HCAC companies cannot sell these models and it’s a new flammable refrigerant that needs a monitor because it’s flammable and none of the HVAC people we talked to feelthis new flammable refrigerant isn’t going to work and units will cost 30% more 😳 Our government must hate us ….putting mandates on technology that is dangerous, not efficient or reliable, technology is not even there yet….they don’t care 😩

We have an old 1997 Yukon that has been a gem to us, and we also buy what it needs. Before we buy it, we always ask ourselves if we could buy another vehicle for the cost of that repair. We have 2 newer vehicles, but this one has never let us down in the snow.

I agree completely; living below our means will bring more peace of mind in the long run. My husband and I are retired but spend our time doing repairs, growing our food, cooking from scratch, taking care of domestic jobs ourselves just to live below our means. We rarely go out and continue to look for ways to trim our spending in order to create a cushion in our budget. We find ourselves constantly looking for ways to make do or reuse items. I now wash and reuse plastic bags in order to avoid buying ziplocs, we use plain brown packaging paper to drain bacon instead of buying paper towels, installed bidets so we could stop buying TP, bake all our own bread products, and last week I learned to make flour tortillas because I just refuse to pay more than $5 for a package at the store. I feel like I'm living in a version of Stranger Things.

You might be surprised on how high they were in some of those years. Interest rates are low and way way below the 50 year average.
