This was my first time trying one of your recipes. I decided to do your puff pastry recipe for this as well (instead of the ready-made kind). I accidentally doubled the sugar for the puff pastry, and I used American butter instead of the recommended European butter (because that was what I had on hand) but this still turned out fantastic! For this Apple strudel recipe I took your advice from the video and added some more seasonings to my tastes (I did the 1 tsp cinnamon but also added 1 tsp pumpkin pie spice) and wow oh wow! Sooo good! This was my first time ever making a recipe of yours (I usually only search on Google by highest rated with at least 50 reviews) but I’m so glad I came across your RUclips video and decided to give this a try. It was even more tasty than apple pie (which is what I originally going to make). Thanks so much! Oh, and I subbed panko breadcrumbs for traditional breadcrumbs (I thought they’d add more crunch and be better but after cooking I didn’t even taste or feel them- perhaps I’ll do more next time?). Lastly, I found I needed 5 to 10 more minutes of cook time (perhaps it’s due to the altitude- I’m at ~4,500 ft elevation).
In short, this recipe is a keeper for sure! I’m making this next time instead of apple pie!

Where I live in Utah we have a huge Slovenian community, so I get apple strudel once in a while. I had it not long ago made with Pink Lady apples. They are my favorite apple. But to have strudel made with them was so good. Another thing we get a lot of here is potica, and Hungarian cookies. If you have never tried them look into them, you will love them as well as your boys and husband will probably love them too. Thanks for all your wonderful baking and food videos. I watch them all.

Great kitchen demo John! I make similar type strudel but always thought I was cheating using store bought puff pastry. Glad as a pro-baker, you went that route too! Similarly, for years I made Thanksgiving Mincemeat pie like my Pennsylvania German grandmother using Nonesuch Mincemeat from a jar 😜 and one year I eagerly tuned into Martha Stewart making her traditional mincemeat pie hoping to crack the code to a great original recipe. Well, guess what? She also used Nonesuch mincemeat from a jar but added her touch with a chopped Annie Green Smith apple. You’d think I’d stop second guessing myself!

The puff pastry dough is a reasonable hack. My half-Austrian paternal grandmother used to make her strudel using phyllo dough and lots of butter. She didn't use raisins (almost nobody in our family could stand them), and instead of sugar, she drizzled defrosted frozen concentrate apple juice to sweeten it and add an extra punch of apple flavor.
She also used bread crumbs (regular plain ones, not panic) in hers.

My counters are Corian, and they gave use the sink cut out as a cutting board. I have a beloved hand oiled and vinigar desensitized cutting board, so I used the cut out for a test. I put strong tea, lemon juice and white vinegar on the board marked it and left it overnight. The next morning the board was perfect except for the vinegar. It was a little cloudy there, so I make my salads carefully, wipe up after using vinegar of any kind, and never clean my beloved cutting board in the kitchen.

My favorite "follow the directions" test was when I was in high school. The teacher gave us a 4 page test and told us to get started. At the top, it said "read all the questions before you start this test". So, I did (I always did what I was told to do). At the end, it said "do not answer the questions, put your pencil down". I was the only one who just sat there...laughing.

I too am dimensionally challenged. But here's a tip that will get you in the ballpark... Measure your hands. I.e., from the end of my thumb to the joint is approximately one inch. If l stretch out my fingers as wide as they will go: 9-inches. From my elbow to my wrist: about a foot. The width of my palm in the air is 3-inches, my palm pressed on the table is 3.5 inches. Your body will be different. Measure all your fingers. Your one-inch may be the middle pinky joint. Your hand span may be 11-inches. ... like l said these are ballpark numbers that will keep you from picking up the ruler so often. 💖🌞🌵😷
