Great podcasts, but please let your guests roll with their points a bit longer. Your enthusiasm sometimes cuts off the guest. (which is a fault of mine also 😊)
You hit on some interesting points. I would also add that for efforts two hours or less the first thing the body uses is the blood glucose and a easy recovery would be simple carbohydrates afterwards. Another “supplement” would be a nitric oxide booster. Foods such as beats helps the body produce more nitric oxide, which is a natural vasodilator. You can buy products that stimulate the bodies production of nitro oxide in a natural way. This lowers your blood pressure your blood vessels to move more oxygen rich blood. The scientists that discovered nitric oxide on a Nobel prize for their work. I have had two family doctors and a pharmacist (all three ride and compete in triathlons) sign off on this addition to my exercise regiment.
29:47 cereal and milk is a terrible thing to eat before bed. If you do eat protein and carbs you should wait at least 15 minutes or more to eat the carbs so the protein can slow down the digestion of the carbs
I think too many nutritionists/dieticians/sports science professionals are too timid when talking about the realities of alcohol use because they're afraid people will be turned off. I get it. It's fair and understandable: people don't want to be told that their self medicating crutch/addiction is actually really bad for their health. The truth is that there is no healthy or safe amount of alcohol, and alcohol is not beneficial in any way. It's not just the extra calories, its the negative impact of alcohol, a carcinogenic poison, on your body. If you're not ready to give it up entirely, there are non-alcoholic (0-.5%) options that actually taste pretty good, give you something to hold at gatherings, and won't make you feel like shit the next day. (Heck, you might even find yourself saving money and reducing calories by virtue of being sober enough to realize how ridiculously expensive drinks are!)
I found her advice way too simplistic and vague for an “expert” in sports nutrition. Not counting the carbs on the bike towards your daily target is bad advice IMO. Surely it would be better advice to work out your energy requirements for the workout and then make sure you take on board those calories either during or after your workout to make sure you’re fuelling adequately and not in a big deficit at the end of the day. I also found her knowledge on overall quantities of food lacking. I did find her approach towards the emotional side of eating wise though.
There is no easy solution to being lean it’s the hardest part of being a elite endurance athlete for most elite athletes the training is the best part keeping the weight low is the brutal part.
Great podcast, really helpfull. For me, protein-rich food also often goes hand in hand with fatty food. Today I ate Greek yoghurt with granola and seeds for breakfast, bread with cheese spread and tinned mackerel for lunch. I use the Yuka app to scan my food for composition, but then in that app I get a red notice for saturated fats every time for that food. Are there any better options? Less fat and still protein-rich? Given plant based is also not the best choice for proteïne intake. Greetings from Speculoos country 🇧🇪
Saturated fat is not as bad as 'scientists' want you to believe. It's the combination of high fat (any fat) and high carbs in the same meal what one should avoid.
Kudos to Alex for navigating all of the garbage bro science that was being thrown out there. Wild elk protein is better because it had to struggle for existence? Sheesh!
💯! While I agree with her approach on upping the protein, I’ve yet to see a decline in performance my minimizing or eliminating carbs. But I guess when you eat carbs all the time like her athletes likely do, then it could be an issue.
@@michaelhoile1369 while I know that during am upper zone 2-zone 6 effort carbs may be beneficial. Humans don’t require carbs and so far while racing, I’ve not seen any benefit to it in races under 2 hours.

"get lean and stay lean forever"?
Challenge accepted
I lost 3 stone after cycling and I'm still lean.

Amazing one ☝️
Never eat most foods after 6pm.........protein shake just before bed to build/maintain in your sleep.
Alex is the friggin best!

Plant based is fine for protein...tofu 15 grams per 100g almost n saturated
Are you incorporating beans, lentils, peas, chick peas into your diet?
Saturated fat is not as bad as 'scientists' want you to believe. It's the combination of high fat (any fat) and high carbs in the same meal what one should avoid.
@GravelRacer1 Half of my diet is lentils and whole grains...
What are your thoughts on fasting (24-40 hrs) and intermittent fasting and to continue fasting/IF when over 60 years of age??
Generally not a good idea. I just recorded a great conversation about it with dr Sharon Madigan, it should be out next week
It's fine to lose weight but crap if you like to ride your bike.
@@TheRoadmanPodcast interesting. Will look for the next episode, thanks for your input and Merry Christmas!!

Thanks Roadman, great stuff. I’m exploring working with a nutritionist - could you post Alex’s contact info in the description notes, please?

Too much saturated fat and it increases inflammation stowing recovery...
Tofu is much better
