2:15 Thanks Dirt Farmer Jay for the washer recommendation. I have washers in a majority of the fasteners. For those wondering, grab yourself a box of 100 Everbilt 1/4" (outer diameter 5/8")...100 if building two racks, and you won't have to make multiple trips to the orange hardware store.
Thanks. In the market for these specific type of racks. This brand looks of solid construction. We will see if they added the washers and if not will add myself.
Stanley, you should have no problems. Just be sure to make the bolts go into the thick web edge near the center if you can. Another approach is to put a 2x4 cleat going sideways across several beams and then attaching the the rack down rods to that. Let me know how this turns out for you. Best, dfj
@@christopheralverson6278 depends on the joist size. your home floor joists are probably 2x10, and hold tones. your garage ceiling joists, if there's a room above, will be 2x10, if there's nothing above the garage, then you're probably looking at 2x6's, which can hold a couple thousand pounds distributed, but not tens of thousands like 2x10's. Just remember too, it is supporting its own weight as well (with drywall), which is around 750lbs depending on how large - standard 10'x22' 1 bay garage is about that much.
We just purchased this, great review BTW. I am having issues with the brackets being 48 inch on center with my garage joists spacing. How imperative this is as I move on in the instillation process? Thanks
Thanks for writing. If you can't get the brackets to land on the joists, then you will need to put a 2x4 across the joists, affix with lags, and then lag the brackets to the 2x4. The load needs to be attached or distributed across the joists. Does this help? Best, DFJ
@DirtFarmerJay the bracket does hit the studs, the issue is the middle of the left bracket isn't exactly 48 inch to the center of the middle bracket. It is an inch or so off.
@@Murchie6 - they are supposed to be installed the same distance apart as the spacing of the holes/mounts on the rack tray they are being used to suspend down from the ceiling. If a pair of down-straps are tapered significantly, then they would be shorter than the others and could cause a problem. As long as you can get everything to connect together and not have the rack or the down-straps tweaked out of shape, you should be fine. Does this help?
Dcxplant - thanks for the kind comment. There is a minor amount of side to side sway when taking items on and off the racks, but nothing that we've been concerned about. Does that help? Best, DFJ
My Garage has Joist in the ceiling that are spaced 24" in addition, I will have to put the ceiling brackets 90 degrees to the down supports. Will that be an issue. Also have you seen the video by Toprax and shows how much movement these racks have in the way they are mounted.
DirtFarmer Jay recommends adding 2X4s nailed on flat across the bottom of the joists to give you the attachment you need. Longer screws are better. Let us know if this works. Best, DirtFarmer Maggie
What type of Washers did you use? Also, how large is the packaging? I will be picking up one of these at Home Depot in a couple of days and want to know if I need a truck or if it’ll fit in my SUV with the seats down. Thanks!
Matt, I hope I got back to you in time for your purchase. I used 5/16" washers. I look for the bit thicker ones in the bin. You should be able to pick these up with your SUV. Let me know how it turns out! Best, DFJ
Giuli Kay - you can indeed set them up in a L - using two complete units. I would recommend keeping access to all edges as 4' is pretty deep to have to reach back for items that far away from an edge. I hope that helps! Best, DFJ
Can you attach one shelving unit to the end of another or do you have to skip 2 ft and attach the 2nd one on another stud? I kind of wanted mine to have 3 all connected and not have gaps in between. It is up against my wall.
where you join the two, instead of using the included slotted angle and lag bolts, use heavier gauge steel slotted angle that you buy from HD or Lowes, and use same diameter structural screws instead of the lag bolts, they're almost twice as strong as lag bolts.
The angle-iron provided to attach to the joists are 21 gauge metal.... they're flimsy. you can build your own using 14 guage angle iron from HD or Lowes (go for steel), and your custom build will be able to hold twice the weight as the prefabbed skimpy fleximount (and pretty much ever other pre-fabbed ceiling storage kit).
Sxe Schnauzer - thanks for taking time to weigh in and share you thoughts and expertise. Indeed, many products, including this one, can use some "help" to make them have higher capacities. Thanks again! Best Regards, DFJ
R Rob, in my installation, yes. Although, another approach could be to put 2x4's flat across the joists and bolt them in securely, and then attach brackets. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and writing! Best, DFJ
James, thanks for asking. Thanks to your question, we have updated the description to include this information for all of the overhead storage racks that Fleximounts offers. We've done this for both the review and installation videos. We will also be adding a "crawler" across the bottom of the videos to call attention to this. Thanks for having our back! Best, DFJ

Nice video, thank you. How does one reason about how much weight the ceiling joists themselves can support?
Simply check with your local code office....

DirtFarmerJay thank you! I picked them up just fine in my SUV, will be installing soon!
Matt, how did the install go? Send me a note at jay@dirtfarmerjay.com. Best, DFJ
DirtFarmerJay haven’t gotten around to it yet. Will let you know when I do!!
I picked up a pair of Gladiator 4x8's in a '10 Ford Escape, even with the wonky back seats folded forward..... they fit fine.
How long did this take to install??
With filming thrown in (which slows down things a bit), it was about 4 hours. I would say it's a 2 to 3 hour job.
Can these be used in an L-shape or only a straight line?

Thank you for the advice, I hadn’t considered 4’ being so deep. Both of your videos have been very helpful with installing the unit! 😊
What are the size of the hex nuts and thanks for the washer comment.
