Alternative is to drill it out, Run a slightly smaller bolt thru the hole and use a washer, lock washer and nut. DONE. Same desired result. Torque to factory spec 37 ft lbs.

I don't know if that's a good idea. The diameter of the bolt is important to keep the ball joint in place. And if it's starts rusting, that diameter of strong steel shrinks even more...

When you drill the broken bolt out, try banging a hex key into the hole and turn the hex key. I have never had this method fail yet. Drilling relieves the clamping action and the hex key is better than any extractor I have tried.

I’ll have to give that a try next time, thanks for the tip!

I have the same problem too. What tap size did you use? Did you put another factory bolt in this?

Good video! I just went through this with my Legacy Gt. Spent 2 hours drilling the bolt out with the spindle still on the car. It sucked but I don't have a welder so had limited options. Subaru has a good design with this system, just sucks when it gets so rusted that it won't come apart.

I have had this happen 2 both sides on the front. And lets say it didnt turn out like yours. When i drilled into it the drill bits break and finally ends up drilling off center. Also tried 2 split the ears and snapped one of the ears. Had to replace both sides with oned from junkyard. Great video. I need 2 learn 2 weld.

Good job! Expertly done. I though you might have to drill all the way through that bolt. This is the first I've seen drilling thought the bolt and then welding a nut to it to save the threads. I assume the tap at the end was just to clean the existing threads since you removed the bolt cleanly.

Thanks! Yeah, just running the tap in at the end to clean it up.

is it possible to spread the ears of the knuckle which the ball join shaft slides into? mine seem too snug and I can't install the new ball joint. thanks.

ash i The ears can be spread slightly with a tapered chisel. This knuckle had a good amount of rust build up that I had to clean out for the new ball joint to be installed. I used a wire wheel on a drill. Thanks for watching!

love this design of this ball joint retention system despite the rust. still beats pressed in ball joints
