Nice calm video with good talking points. This was probably the most compelling thing I've come across to sell me on the series.

Good timing. Just picked this up last week, having a great time with solo play. Agree with your points about combat and rules. Liked it enough to late pledge the current Kickstarter and bundle with 1st game.

Great summary of HEXplore it: *very overwhelming but also very satisfying*
    *Re: Choices*
I usually hate a large amounts of choices and the AP that follows in eurogames but somehow I love it here. Perhaps because, like Folklore, HEXplore it is one meaty high-level sandbox game that reminds me of when I used to build (and solo test) RPG worlds for my gaming group while growing up. Only better cuz everything has been developed already - I can just have my own adventures in it! And that freedom of choice, especially when you relax the time rules a bit can be very Zen-like: you set up your game and don't tear it down for a month (in real time), every day or weekend revisiting it for some time, do a few actions and leave it again. It's like this little parallel life you live in another realm. The high-level top-down view of an entire forest with all these little quests helps raise it from the tension of a low-level dungeon crawl. It's just...nice.
    *Re: Getting it right/Math System*
The previous comment plays into getting the rules right all the time and working the math in combat in that the relaxed gameplay allows me to relax a bit regarding the precision of following the rules as well. Now, normally I would play a game like this fairly strict in that, if a character dies, it dies and I just replace it with another hero. And HEXplore it comes with tons of heroes to choose from, so no problem there. But, I also just like to let the stories emerge from imaginative play - much like an RPG and not fret too much about calculating each battle to the very last digit or worry that one tiy exceptional rule is remembered as I play over weeks. Just relax and make a couple of moves a day and enjoy the little adventures your characters go on each time. Like Bob Ross with painting, only here with a board game :-)
*Re: Story Immersion & Unique Play*
Finally, the main reasons I play games like these: the immersive experience. I looooooove story-driven games, narrative, choose-your-own-path mechanics, etc. So, the Story Book is the extra gravy on the meal while having so many Quests, Characters and Events allows me to cycle through them once, put them aside, and play different ones until I've experienced the whole range of material in the box. Mind you, with so much content, it takes quite a while and THEN I still have the other two HEXplore It settings to play! And that's not even counting the extra content (Monthly Living Cards - on their website). The only thing holding me back at the moment of playing it all? The Campaign Mode that they're developing that will add EVEN MORE story! Sadly, they're at the very beginning of development of this (1/5th of Valley, nothing yet for Forests or Sands) so I might not wait for it before I sink my teeth into the regular game.

I play a lot of games like that. Just keep them set up for a week or so, and take a turn here and there. Doing that right now with Runebound 2e.

What other game similar to this do you like? I found the overland/realm crawling genre to have very few games compared to the classic dungeon crawler. I believe the closest to this is Runebound 3rd. Most other games like this, from Magic realm onwards, seems to be either really old (like 70/80s) or out of print.

Oh, I love that card hold you have for the top row. I always found it annoying that the board piece up top orients them away from you. Where do you get those card holders?

    • @TheDungeonDive

Amazon. Just search for wooden card holder.

Another great video, and thank you for focusing on this game like you have. One question, you mentioned the "Return" expansion incorporated into your base game, do you have or see value in the original expansion to the base Forests Of Adrimon? It is half the price of the base game and seems to only add a few bosses and characters to play as.

I’ve only played this one. The only thing this has in common with Mage Knight is the fantasy theme and the use of hexes.
