I think this problem originated from the democratic party as they want to deviate from the central government's policy. They have never wanted to arrive at a comprise with the Chinese government as the British government does in the British Sino-Government Treaty. I think the HK people are naive and they just stick to the thinking to keep them unchanged, but the British government is more skillful in foreign affairs and they know they should withdraw from HK and they are willing to make compromises. For instance, they give the whole of HK even though they can keep HK Island under the Nanjing Treaty and they accept that they have no bargaining power and give up. However, HK people just want to fight for the last minute and come up as a tragedy. Carrie Lam is a civil servant and is not a politician.
