  • Wednesday "Wendy" Johnson was 51 years old when she died at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in June.
Family members said her death was heat-related and she began to feel weary on a hot day while working her job with the U.S. Postal Service. Johnson, who lived in Sanford, worked for the service for more than 20 years.

I quit a job (at 62) 5 months ago. New field for me and was excited working in an aseptic lab environment. No one told me about the unpredictable hours (sometimes 18- 20 a day!) and then if you called out the next day it was frowned upon. Even after complaining about the unpredictable schedule and not knowing what and when you would start or end I was admonished for taking consecutive days off. Even the 20-30 years olds were complaining!!! I'm not just out of college age and was going to work depressed daily. Once my supervisor sat me down, we had the conversation about life/work balance he pulled out 2 write ups for me to sign. Needless to say I DID NOT and simply walked away! As a Full time City Letter Carrier and I heard that she was a supervisor riding in the back of the Postal truck. 1st let me say, I am assigned to the very same type of truth she was riding in and yes those trucks have no air conditioning. The 2 flap windows allowing air to circulate in the back are useless when it is hot. She was riding in a jump seat along with the rest of the mail that has to be delivered. She was doing a route inspection with the carrier and the route on a mounted route. A route inspection is completely different from the supervisor observing the carrier, in which the supervisor would tail the carrier in another vehicle for a few minutes and would be on their way. Carriers are not allowed to drive the truck with both doors open as UPS drivers do and driving with the back gate open is a violation. The small plastic or aluminum Kmart fan up front is of no use because it only blows hot air in the driver’s face. You can roll the left side window, however, you must be cautious of people reaching inside the truck grabbing mail from the tray ledge, while you’re strapped in your seat. Our union fought to have the carriers start early during the summer with the hopes that most of the delivers are completed by noon, which is when the sun is said to be at its highest. The suggestion was shot down only to have starting times pushed back later in the morning with some carriers leaving the office around 11 a:m and all deliveries must be completed by the end of the day. Management preach drink plenty of water, stay hydrated, yet balk at the comfort stops after drinking all those hydrating liquids. Our Union stress taking mini breaks in addition to the 2 breaks, however those extra breaks only pushes your time in the field back and you are out in the field much longer. I keep an Igloo cooler filled with ice in the truck everyday only to have the water melted before the completion of the day. Let’s not discuss that you are apparently sitting on top of the engine because the floor surround your seat gets very hot you actually can cook an egg or make a cheese melt on the floor. My deepest condolences go out to her family. They are fully aware of the condition of those tombs on wheels, yet this is what we carriers have to deal with on a daily. Someone suggested that they go back to the days of old when carriers walked the route. That is not going to happen because for management, a carrier can deliver to more boxed by truck than on foot, as the Postal Service is moving to make deliveries with multiple boxes on 1 post. The carrier can knock out 12 delivers driving while the walking has completed maybe 4. The pay and the benefits are good, however, the job is hard and they will try to extract every penny you are paid out of you with work. The job is not for the lazy person aka a slacker.

No it doesn't sound right to do a route inspection in the back of essentially an oven. They can do route inspection with a vehicle of her own following the carrier. This is so wrong and sad.

As a postal carrier and LLV driver of 32 years, NO employee should be in the back of those vehicles! We’ve had in our station, postmasters and supervisors who have ridden in the back of those vehicles on route inspections while they sat on anything from a milk crate to a bucket to a kitchen chair. If the carrier would have to slam on the brakes, the person in the back would probably end up in the drivers lap, or worse yet, through the windshield. Just imagine if the vehicle rolled over! It’s somehow okay for management to circumvent safety rules. There are only 2 small vents in the backend of those vehicles. Again, NO person should be riding back there! Take it from a previous user, those vehicles are ovens in the summer and freezers during the winter!!

I worked telco installer in Florida for many years, none of the trucks had AC. Summertime in Central Florida, high 90s was normal but no matter the temperature, we worked, climbing poles, hanging lines, digging trenches, crawling through attics, so there is more to this story than just heat.

To all of the postal delivery companies:
    DO BETTER!!!
The “leaders” sit in their cozy air conditioned offices and homes while good people like Wendy Johnson suffer and lose their lives. It’s not right and I hope the family sues the brakes off of the USPS!
There needs to be a nationwide law put in place in her honor and changes need to be made now!
So sorry to the family, friends, associates, and coworkers for your loss 💐
