IS this Click Baiting? A laser doesn't needs a lens. I would use the camera of the smartphone to "see" Infrared, checking if LASER diode works - and if polarity is correct. It needs pulsed DC. Hooking it directly to a battery will "burn" the Laser. You need a "driver-PCB" or make some yourself.
