  • At the annual Quex Barbecue on 10th August 2013 - and for the first time that anyone could remember on BBQ Day - a band was fielded for a half-course of Cambridge Max. The ringing certainly wasn't perfect, but there were good patches and this is (in my view) the best recording yet made and posted on RUclips [as at 10/8/13] of the quirky old 12 hanging in the Waterloo Tower in Birchington....an unashamedly secular ring cast for the sheer amusement of John Powell-Cotton and his friends in 1820 (the front 4 have since been recast). He employed that celebrated ringer, William Shipway, to teach some of his employees to ring the bells, and they formed the Quex Institute of ringers.
Many folk are not so keen on these bells....I think they're rather good: but you need a strong band to get decent ringing out of them!!
