    Wow so much nostalgia. I played EverQuest for so many years, then tried WoW for a bit and now am enjoying GW2. I started EQ in 2000 right when the first expansion Kunark had come out. The game has changed a lot since then. Originally there were no in game maps. The current starting experience where the game holds your hand and shows you the controls did not exist. You made your character and it plopped you in your race's starting city and you just had to figure it out.
    I remember making a half elf in Kelethin which a city up in the trees. I promptly fell off the platform and died right away. The original UI was so clunky and you couldn't customize it. I was so happy when things like maps and a better UI were added.
    It makes me happy that EverQuest is still being updated. I have a lot of good memories from there. Maybe I will try it again someday. Watching Josh play it again really made me realize that despite playing EverQuest for so many years, I had forgotten so many of the quirks already.

    • @jshtng78

      That was the starter experience that we players of older MMOs remember fondly but if you watch Josh's other videos you'll see he's not a fan.

      There was a tutorial in the original EQ release. It was an offline tutorial that you launched from a different executable from the actual game. It taught you movement, spell casting, how to talk to NPCs and how to climb a ladder. By climbing a ladder I mean repeatedly fall off it because ladders have always sucked in this game.

    I played EQ1 back in 1999 when i was 13 and only stopped when WoW came out (obviously). From complete newbie to fully raid geared, I was an amazing journey. If you want to see some of the old raids, look up Fires of Heaven or Afterlife Everquest kills on RUclips, they were the top 2 guilds.
    I highly advise playing on a time locked progression server. Most people play on those and the lower levels and much more populated. To play on the normal live servers as a completely new player will be a much different experience to what EQ1 truely was.
    The best two starting areas are Greater Faydark which has Kelethin and Felwithe (High Elf, Half Elf and Wood Elves) or Commonlands which joins to the city of Freeport (humans and Half Elves) or Nek Forest (Dark Elves).
    Also, Listen to the Kelethin music, the wood elf city in Greater Faydark. It's a master piece and is iconic for EQ1 players.

    @wormspeaker 2 года назад +50

    EQ1 as it stands now is NOT the same as it was back in the day. I experienced the change. Some will tell you it happened with the Release of Planes of Power, but I think the true nail in the coffin was the release of The Serpent's Spine which is where they introduced the kind of an escalator for leveling. If you really want to find out if old MMOs were really better you need to try P1999 which is basically as close as possible to the original Everquest experience.

    • @rynejones8513
      @rynejones8513 2 года назад +12

      P1999 is all the aspects that turn people away. Many of these changes are called quality of life because they actually make the game more enjoyable for a newer player. The worst aspect of the game at the moment I would say is the UI and the feel of movement. Of those two the UI could be addressed easily by the devs and give you something that actually looks decent when you start playing the game. Going from the modern MMOs where the UI is neatly laid out for you to EQ is very jarring.

    • @poisonated7467
      @poisonated7467 Год назад

      @@rynejones8513 Actually, as a new player, the quality of life changes reversed were a breath of fresh air. Getting lost in Greater Faydark because there was no map was SO immersive and captured me immediately. Having to use the paths as markers and memorize the zones was a blast. Learning my class myself instead of having a tooltip tell me what my spells did or even, hell, letting a whole online guide tell me my perfect rotation from 1 to max, was much, MUCH more fun. Needing a group by level 4-5 and needing to be social through the chat was also a great realization of what it could be like. Instead of everyone grouping up and no one talking and just mowing down the entire dungeon, we camped a spot or two and talked. Combat sometimes required communication, which is a plus.

    Hello from Cazic Thule server! I consider myself as a long-time casual in EQ. I've played TLPs, P99, and of course Live. I wish I was a little older when EQ was new so I had time to actually play it.
    P99 is great if you can play a lot and maintain a static group. The lack of QoL means soloing is super difficult. The gameplay for the classes that can solo starting fresh is still a rough time. And that rough experience isn't always best for the game. But the community does provide QoL like free ports for corpse runs. Not everyone has the time for this game. And while there are people who don't always play within the community etiquette, P99 is known for extremely generous players, as people before them have shown that generosity. Players like the term "paying it forward".
    TLP is great when the server starts and no one has beaten end game content. Keeps some QoL used in Live which is welcomed to me. Solo gameplay not so bad but still rough to an extent. One HUGE issue: Krono. Totally destroys what made East Commonlands trading so great. People essentially charging a hundred bucks or more for in-game items.
    Live. For where I am in my life, Everquest Live servers allow me to play at a manageable pace and progress. Solo +merc and *cough* box is super manageable. Don't box on true box servers though, always remember. Live servers are also good for meeting new players. Plenty of friendly people that go out of their way to help new players. Gear is easy to pass down in Everquest in general. And on a free account, you have access to 20ish years of content. Is it still antiquated? Yes. Am I biased because of my previous experience? Yes. But there are unique aspects of the gameplay you will find that is completely lost on other games. But it is an adjustment that not everyone will enjoy and that is understandable.
    I encourage you to try it. If you like it, the sub is required for end game content or TLP. Also remember pvp is essentially non existent.

    EQ was brutally difficult and punishing. Mainly because of two things, loss of exp and gear on death, and the fact that non casters couldn't bind anywhere other than major cities, so they had to run, sometimes more than 20 minutes, to get back to their corpse. It's no coincidence, that WoW blew up, considering it fixed those two issues. (It also fixed the issue of grinding if you didn't like that)

    It's funny that you're doing the quests. My family, friends, and I just go kill things. Everquest is one of those games where quests were not the focus, but you could obtain them and do them at your leisure. The only real reason to do quests are:
    a) Reputation gain with a faction
    b) Obtain your epic weapon
    It is just as satisfying to go kill things and move between different zones to gain levels.

    I love Everquest and played it back in classic and on P99, but watching Josh play it for the 1st time, I realize how horrible it is to learn. The revised tutorial zone helps some, but not enough. Even with a cadre of stream fans in game helping, it's overly complicated and hard. You would almost need someone in the room or in voice chat to explain it all. It's so fun watching someone play EQ for the 1st time and enjoy the experience for the 1st time.

    EQ was my first MMO that I played for about 4 years! Had such a falling out with a guild that I left and played Graal online for a bit before I just meandered my way into FF14 and stayed in Eorzea. I recently recovered my old account and went back to one of the TLPs, but the community is so toxic there that I just left and went to FF11 and play that and 14 now, lol.

    Wow this brings back memories. This game was before my time but my very first job in the video game industry was being a community manager for EQ. Real shame that I missed this live but I'm sure that I will have a laugh or two watching you stumble through this pretty jank game. I'm less than an hour into the VOD and I already chuckled at you missing the entire section in character creation where you chose your character's religion and morality. Also a big fan of the RUclips streaming scene so I hope you stick around, at least for another EverQuest stream or two!

    EQ was my first MMO I started back in 99 and played through until 2004. When the covid plague hit I decided to check out Eq again for old time sake and managed to get sucked in for most of 2020. I am looking forward to watching you do the Dungeon and Dragons Online, it has by far the most unique character build style of any MMO I have played.

    I played 7 accounts for about 10 years or so in EverQuest
    I used software that let me play up to 6 characters at once at the same time as a party, using 2 computers, and would auto heal my main tanks or nuke the same target etc.
    So I had my own party when I was not in the mood for other players, or was just playing at odd hours, etc.
    I did join raids etc, and also grouped sometimes
    I finally had to quit when my Carpal Tunnel got too painful/bad
    Iksar necromancers can solo most of the game, monks sort of can too, Shaman did ok soloing too

      Correction I think it was more like 18 years but I did have to slow down after 14 to 15 years because of the above mentioned carpal tunnel, and the TIA a bit later did not help at all either.
      I had been playing about 6 to 8 hours per weekday and 12 to 24+ hours on week ends.

    Real talk though, my first experience with EverQuest was an advertisement on the VHS release of A Knight's Tail in the pre-feature rolls. I think, knowing what I know now, that was around the time of Scars of Velious. I have since gone back in recent years and played both EQ Live and Project 1999 and I absolutely adore this game.

      If you do decide to take the plunge I would suggest Mischief as the server to start on. Free Trade TLP meaning the expansions are unlocking as it goes and you aren't terribly far behind and free trade allows almost all items to be tradable apart from very specific ones like your epic weapon.

    UO, video.. has to be all about being slain by random forest creatures while trying to level your skills and stats.. also standing around duping gold by picking it up and dropping (yes I know they fixed that after beta.. but it was hilarious anyways)...
    Or begging.. loved that skill. Or bank stealing and all the shenanigans. That's pretty much UO in a nut shell... Oh and "patriot arrows" (arrows would follow you as you ran due to how net code worked and super high modem latency in that era). It was just a silly game on the raggedy edge of the MMO era and I loved it. Don't forget Asheron's Call. There are private servers so you can play it still. They are very good, actually.
