    Brilliant analysis of Auron.
    I caught some examples of him nudging the party in the direction he wanted. In particular, he, along with lulu, encourages Tidus to go to Yuna in the woods, seeming to know it will bond them.
    It seems this is what Auron is counting on to incentivize Tidus and Yuna to reject the final summoning. By giving Yuna and Tidus additional personal motivations to reject it, he is, as you say, "nudging" things along while "playing by the rules."

    • @ItsSVO

      Very similar to Gandalf in the lord of the rings. He nudges and directs people in the right direction without being overbearing and uplifts those around him to fulfil their potential. Interesting that they’ve both come back from the dead until their task is done also.

      In other words, both Auron's and Gandalf's archetypes are perfect leaders - if I wasn't self employed I would want Auron as my boss.

    Looking at the Chappu/Wakka/Lulu issue and how it relates to Tidus, I think I finally understand the point.
    Chappu is thematically about making wakka and lulu grief stricken characters, but he's also an analog and foreshadowing device for Tidus, and so Lulu is for Yuna.
    The parallels between Chappu and Tidus are introduced in so many ways. First, Tidus resembles Chappu physically. Second, he receives Chappu's sword. Third, he goes to his death to protect his girl. This last paralell is made by Gatta after Wakka smacks him for convincing Chappu to join the crusaders. Gatta says, "Chappu said, having the girl is good, but keeping her far away from Sin is better." Tidus taking one instead of Yuna through the final aeon is basically this.
    Just as Tidus has Chappu's fate, so Yuna has Lulu's. In that way, I think Lulu ties directly into the main plot. Until realizing this, I thought she was a throwaway character, like a backup Auron minus the plot significance. But in art, everything happens for a reason, including ancillary characters.
    I liked your point about Lulu's grief black dress. I think Yuna's white top is meant to contrast with Lulu's grieving black, because she hasn't yet lost her Chappu.

    • @AlleywayJack
      @AlleywayJack  2 года назад

      Yes, I hadn't considered how Lulu and Yuna share the same arc in that regard - that's quite an interesting one!

      @@AlleywayJack I went back and double checked, and the camera work confirms my thoughts. When Luzzu delivers his line about keeping your girl away from Sin, the camera switches to a deep shot on both Yuna and Lulu, then zooms in on Lulu.

    New sub here. Great content Jack. This was my first entry into the world of Final fantasy back in 2002 when I saved my money from my first job to buy a PS2 at 16. Even today with the HD remakes this is still my absolute favourite game of the series. Your review of this game is just brilliant. Keep making these :)

      It kills me that they messed the faces up. Its so much obviously worse, the animation and digital acting is a major step down comparatively.
      My kid is getting older and will be able to play soon, and the ol' PS2 is long gone. No way to enjoy the originals now.

    The walking on water thing is definitely on the nose 😂
    What do you think if you view it like this though: Water in ffx has the power to hold memories (auron in macalania forest). Dream Zanarkand - as it dissipates at the end of the game - is depicted as a sphere of water, with each droplet containing a different memory of Zanarkand (or piece of the dream that holds that memory).
    In this game about grief, often water will be memories of what you have lost. To step into a sphere of water is to immerse yourself in those memories. It’s to embrace a dream where you never lost anything. It is denial of loss. Even playing blitzball is a form of denial, a moment where you can forget about suffering/forget about sin. Viewing water in this symbolic manner, I find it interesting that Yuna does not sink into it as she sends people to the next world, so they don’t hold on to this world and grow bitter.

    I think it's not quite right to treat the world map as a glorified level select. The world map featured various encounters and it depended on different geographic location. Like in ff7, the forest always had much more dangerous encounters but you could get rare steals or opportunities to level up limit breaks through the valron encounters by rocket Town. Also, remember the harrowing walk to wutai when yuffie takes all of your materia. You're left without any group healing with enemies group targeting lightning spells at you. Hopefully you snagged that rare bolt ring before you make that walk. Things you can't quite accomplish by a menu. Also, the change in scale made for much better game pacing. Modern open world games are essentially walking simulators. It's much better for game pacing to take 5 minutes to walk between locations rather than 15 or so. I wish modern games are not so hell bent on making everything open world.

    16:23 wow, my boy khimari snubbed in a quick line about how interesting all the characters are! Lol I’m not actually mad about it just love khimari. One of the best stories of all, banished by a warrior tribe for being small he finds a new tribe. His sphere grid allows him to learn from his Allie’s. Khimari starts as a stoic prideful self and turns to find strength in his new family of misfits.

    11:01 again, as someone who ffx was my first final fantasy game, and even my first real JRPG outside of dabbling in such mechanics in games like Pokémon when I was younger, I think the linearity fits both the high stakes story, which id say was paramountt to sucking me in and as an introduction to jrpgs. I rented the final fantasies for my snes when I was in grade school and yeah, getting lost on a world map not knowing where to go with a bunch of walking and lines of text, not fun lol. A Super enthralling story with (I just played it on original hardware last night) amazingly stunning graphics at the time, it got me into them. Not to mention as a “my first JRPG” it’s linearity and clear story let ya know where to go, and it’s an easy game so you can beat it just doing this and experience an epic. But also as baby’s first JRPG it does allow, if you want to explore, lots of customization and side quests, all seemingly for JRPG vets as often these side quests were not part of my main play through but wouldn’t be discovered until subsequent play through really laying the foundation for some one to digest jrpgs in an extremely easy fashion.

    15:27 yes to add the the point with the linearity and your point about the story progression, the game does keep ya moving and makes it seem like you have to keep moving, like a real storyZ side quests are usually extras in service to the story (legendary weapons, more aeons, extra background that sheds light on the failures of defeating sin in n the past) as well so they don’t feel like you’re dilly dallying while trying to save the world.

    I’m a weirdo who comments while I’m watching. 8:52 I think in regards to fans being upset at new titles, as someone who grew up in the time period of final fantasy but whose first gf fake was 10, I think as someone who discovered the series later in its existence is that each game is it’s own game, you don’t need to like em all. Some are for me some aren’t. It’s great that a series has so much diversity.

    Sorry you just 37:55 mentioned the absentee father motif which is constant in Japanese media which I think clicks well with sin as the history of aggression that looms over us. So many Japanese fathers were lost to war. Ending that cycle seems pretty relevant to characters so strife with daddy issues.

    46:12 I understand some people seeing auron as partly being a main protagonist but despite auron listed age of being like 30 or something young like that? He comes off as much older and is clearly supposed to be an older wiser character. I think auron has shed enough ego to know this isn’t his story and he says it over and over again. While he may guide he lets tydus and tuna make their own decisions at the end of the day (even if sometimes it seems like there is no choice like after the game at Luca) Aurons goal is to see Tina and tydus to become their own and he allows

    • @AlleywayJack
      @AlleywayJack  4 месяца назад +1

      Auron's age is definitely an odd one. I read somewhere there was confusion between writers and designers what age he really was - and of course he died as a young man but seems to have aged up while being an unsent.

    39:40 haha yea I think a lot of young men don’t like to see themselves properly represented. Tydus is grating for sure at first but he was just like me, plucky, overconfident when he shouldn’t be, and like most teenagers, pretty flippant about rules and polite society. These are characteristics that often get young men in trouble that fade with age and they do get him in trouble! But like any good sci-fi our character learns from their own hubris. It doesn’t change who they are, cause let’s be honest, there’s nothing more honest than being a kid. But it does change how he acts. Towards the end of the game he’s more measured and less brazen. He’s still confident but less likely to rush into something that could put someone he cares about in harms way. Even to the point that auron must remind him of the his true character when they face yunalesca. His sense of justice, strong in younger people, never mires and actually inspires his teammates while his teammates show him he’s not alone. His actions have consequences so he has to think before he acts. So yeah, it’s annoying to see yourself portrayed so honestly but by the end of the game it’s also very healing to know you’re capable of growing and changing while remaining true to who you are.

    My thoughts on this incredible video game. The story is brilliant. The sphere grid is clever and engaging. Characters, for the most part, are good and have proper motivation. Villains are layered and compelling. Extra's are available and engaging with the exception of the chocobo race in the calm land. That one can go suck a bag of dicks and die. I love the monster catching and grind involved and that the main story is only a tiny part of the game. 100 hours at least to get it all done. It is and forever will be a masterpiece. I play this on my PS5 and enjoy it more than the newest release of FF 16.

    For me FFX was the beginning of the decline of FF & the JRPG. The loss of the Overworld was a stake through the heart of the JRPG, no more Airship exploring Islands the world gradually expanding during the course of the game it felt like a real adventure. Since 2003 (Tales of Symphonia) I think Tales of has been the better franchise partly because they retained the Overworld throughout the entire 6th Gen & half of the 7th Gen. But even they abandoned the Overworld in 2009, all the big JRPGs have now become a linear outdoor corridor with FFXIII & Shining Resonance Refrain being some of the biggest offenders which is terrible.
    Since FFX fewer mainline FF titles have released while the 90s had a balance of content & fantastic graphics for their time with FFX onwards Square are obsessed with graphics to the detriment of the overall content & scope of the game. While I liked the Story of FFX for me it's a step backwards in every other department. Western RPGs put 1000% more effort in world building, while JRPGs don't seem to care about world building now but I prefer every other aspect of the JRPG. Classic 90s JRPGs were the complete package.

    • @ItsSVO
      @ItsSVO 2 года назад +3

      I think it depends on what you want. For me the stories and characters of The series is what always grabbed me and stuck with me not the side quests etc. Most JRPGS have very anime type stories which I just can’t stand personally so I absolutely loved X and it’s more linear style because it meant the pacing throughout is excellent and really helps the strong narrative.

    Overall, a good game. It loses some things by compromising to a Disney aesthetic, especially in its English localization.
    I liked it overall, despite the compromises. I think the best moments are when they enter Zanarkand up until their departure. Also, the scene with Jecht through to the ending.
    I do think it's a shame how much seriousness they lost through a Disney vibe, but I think this is the last time you get the highs you see in serious games like FFVII
    It was the death of the franchise but also had a lot of the things that made it great. Two thumbs up from me

      What do you mean by Disney vibe? I didn’t get anything of the sort from this game. Do you mean because of it’s colour pallet?
