The Basenji is a primitive or pariah dog that evolved as a hunting dog in Africa. He has prick ears, a wrinkled forehead, and a tail that folds over his back, and his coat is short and thin. His behavior has been compared to that of a cat, and he is unquestionably curious, bright, and self-sufficient. Despite his many positive qualities, the Basenji is not the breed for everyone. Here's what you should know if you're thinking about getting a Basenji.
A Basenji may not be the right dog for you if you value your possessions and lack a sense of humor. It's not uncommon for Basenji owners to brag about the destruction their dogs have caused. The Basenji is a hyperactive, energetic dog who has his own opinions. You'll have to be smarter or at least sneakier than he is if you want to stay one step ahead of him.
He's an excellent watchdog because he's always alert. The Basenji is known as the African Barkless Dog, but he is anything but quiet. He yodels and growls to communicate. The Basenji is an excellent choice for families with older children who can properly handle his playful demeanor.
A tired Basenji is generally considered a good Basenji. Plan to give him plenty of exercise on a daily basis, such as a long leash walk or a chance to run in a safe, traffic-free area. Dog sports such as agility, lure coursing, obedience, rally, and tracking provide both physical and mental stimulation. If there isn't enough to keep him occupied, he will invent his own (possibly harmful) entertainment.
Keep your Basenji contained within a properly fenced yard. He likes to hunt small furry animals like squirrels and will go after moles, mice, rats, and other vermin with zeal. You can't rely on an underground electronic fence to keep him contained. He's far too adamant about getting his way.
Train the intelligent but rebellious Basenji with firmness, patience, and consistency. Keep training sessions short and fun, and don't be surprised if he comes up with his own twists on directions or outwits you in other ways. For the best results, use positive reinforcement strategies such as praise, play, and food rewards.
All that is required to keep the Basenji's odorless coat is a weekly brushing to remove dead hair. Trim your nails, brush your teeth, and keep your ears clean and dry to avoid infections.
The Basenji should be kept inside. He will express his dissatisfaction in a variety of harmful ways if restricted to the backyard with little or no human company.

I rescued my basenji from my local pound hes definitely a mix of something else and not a full breed basenji but it explained so so much when someone on the street asked me if that was his breed when i walked by with him hes very rambunctious and is very smart but listens pretty good for the most part

Thank you so much for the video. I was considering one. Research on them seemed like a good fit except the part on how trainable they were. I fugured looking up videos on them would help me get an idea. I won't be getting one anymore lol. I'm glad though, I'd hate to be the wrong home.

Great concise and to the point video. I love this dog breed even though I never experienced it. My only concern about them is the yodel sound they make as they might annoy and disturb our neighbours and also their destructive behaviour if left alone at the apartment for a maximum of 6 hours. Of course, until the age of 7 months, there will be always someone supervising it.

I have a 1 year and 4 months old Basenji. She is a rescue. She is hard on her toys. So the first time I had to leave her alone . I expected to come home to something or everything being in ashambles .
But to my surprise and delight . I was very wrong. She didn't bother with anything . Everything was just as I had left it . She does have other Basenji traites that I could do without.
But thank God this is not one of them . We'll just keep working on the rest.

Basenji's are not good Apartment dogs, no matter what you hear.

Believe me, they’re not noisy at all. I had one for 15 years (2001-2016) and now have another one (9 mos.). He can make little whining noises to be let out of his crate and a vocalized yawn when in the car but that’s about it!

@@timslater566 They are super quite from their hunter instincts of ancestors in the Congo and the ones today love attention so they also know how to bust through a door to make noise and get what they want.

@@mikerapp1428, I am preparing to adopt a basenji puppy in my apartment after having received good information from professionals such as veterinarians and renowned dog trainers.
And you base you this on yourself to say that?🙄

Mine does that in the car too but it’s more like a “vocalized yawn”! I just think he’s happy to be going somewhere!😁

If you can manage to get them into a routine then it seems to help basenjis stay out of trouble or you can start to notice actions they take to get into trouble from a 18 year old basenji we once had.
