  • Zion National Park is perhaps one the heavy hitters of the Utah Big Five National Parks.
It's insanely popular, and with attractions like the Narrows and Angel's Landing, all inside a heavenly setting, what's there not to like?
One of the challenges with visiting in the warmer months is the shuttle system, which don't get us wrong... we love it and think more parks should do this... but depending on when you arrive, and how hard it is to find parking, taking the shuttle can be a costly proposition in terms of time.
Now imagine camping at Watchman Campground. The shuttle is a minute or two walk from your campsite for most.
So on days when I wanted to do something like hike the Narrows, camping at Watchman made it super easy to beat the crowds by just rolling out of my sleeping bag, and walking to the shuttle. Easy shuttle access and avoiding the parking headaches is worth the price of admission alone at Watchman.
Now, some of the sites, as you'll see, are pretty close together. And some lack shade. The spot I nabbed for this one (you can spot my yellow tent in site D36) lacked both privacy and shade. So bring a sun shade is my best advice.
And yep. On one of the four nights I stayed there, I had one of the most inconsiderate camping neighbors I ever had, who started playing music at midnight. I asked them to turn it off and they did, but they talked at a normal volume the rest of the night. When your head is about 15 feet away, that's a problem.
I wish I had Campvue back when I was shopping for a site, but alas, that is why I am here now. That said, depending on how you go about booking, chances are you may have little choice like I did.
But don't be discouraged. If you get a site that has no shade, the Virgin River is a short walk away and you can swim in the cool waters any time you want.
Despite the potential for trouble with a couple close sites, you simply have to camp here once, no matter once. Go with the attitude that you will dominate the crowds and be the first in the Narrows with east in the morning, and you will come out victorious!

Glen I know you love zion, saw your video hiking the narrows.
      can you imagine no shuttles?
      cars would be everywhere.
Zions popularity is the only negative.
