Has anyone ever asked why the Bay of Naples is "circular"?
Much of the city is built on a vast "ash" field. Hence the large tunnel system beneath the streets.
Great farming country inland; until it disappears under several metres of volcanic ash or gets swept away by a pyroclastic flow..
