I love this song and the versions that appeared in Lost Highway. The music is eerily great, and David Bowie sings the words very hauntingly and beautifully. This was such a fitting song to open and end Lost Highway.

He just goes for broke singing on this album, it's true. And if you want to hear David _SING_?! Look for the song "Truth" by Goldie from 1998. It'll be immediately obvious that Bowie didn't write it, but he does the vocals for it, and uses the entire register that he was capable of at that point, from falsetto to bass. It's gorgeous. I can't get over how marvelous I find his voice to be on this song, on Stay, and on Truth.
I don't agree to this description. There is no mediocre material on "1. Outside"! It only contains awesome songs, I even love the segues, and the album is not too long.
