I watched jimmypoopins do runs of this game almost every night for that final grind where he forced himself to stream every day. It's quite possibly one of the most brutal grinds I've ever seen from someone in speedrunning. Such a well deserved record if I've ever seen one.
Those grinds of running every day can get exhausting, especially since it's basically just playing in a time loop, restarting every time you fail something or finish without reaching goal. Last time I saw such a grind, it was Kanno on 16 Star. It wasn't as long, but a non-stop stream of over 3000 hours is still pretty nuts.
@@apollolux I played and ran the Punchout games first, but I did pick up learning Ninja Gaiden II for that tournament that was mentioned briefly in the video. There were tons of people who had so much experience with the game, so I didn't stand a chance lol, but it was a lot of fun!
@@zallard1 Groovy stuff! I only ever played NG2 casually as a kid and didn't have the dexterity back then to get past the fourth stage, so it's one of those games like SMB1 and Zelda 1 that haunted me for years until finally beating it for the first time as an adult.
Because the first time he really did kill it and achieved a clean WR, the second time it was a hard and long grind to beat someone with magic wall jump fingers.
I guess he took it for granted the first time. He was so much better than everyone else at the time it might’ve just been a cold achievement. But the effort he put into getting back is insane
Ngl Jimmy's journey described here just embodies that energy of "the final boss is revealed to be the true protagonist who becomes the player character in NG+ with full maxed stats".
The Arcus reveal was just so fucking cool. Obviously we all know your storytelling is A+ but your editing has great comedic timing too, beautiful video man. Once again you make me deeply invested in a game I've never even played.
"Beco is a great rival. But it wasn't just his quest, it was also jimmy's quest, to beat jimmypoopins" fucking chills man, what a way to end an incredible video
I love how his reactions changed to the records. First subdued, second really excited, and 3rd emotional. And now he had a nice documentary celebrating that, well done Jimmy
@@justno984 It might also be a sense of relief. Like "Finally...its over!". Obviously its VERY hard to ACTUALLY kill a run in any game...but when the game is that hard and its niche and your that far ahead...its not unreasonable to say "someone could beat if it they put in the effort...but that's never gonna happen so the run's dead". TL;DR Don't take people's word so literately. Emotional connotations exist for different people even if the claim they make ends up being factually wrong later down the line...
@@justno984 As an extra anecdote, I've dabbled with speedruning a bit myself. (so what I said came from a place of understanding rather than guesswork) Someone else in this comment section replied with something similar...so I guess you could make the claim that all 3 of us are egotistical...but that's a bit of a stretch don't you think? Anyways...my goal is not to excuse egotistical behavior. My goal is to shed light on how multifaceted human motivation is...but even if you don't believe me outright...the effect of what I'm trying to get across to you is that your being too black and white with the process by which you assume one's intent is egotistical in the first place...which if you decide to double down on...is ironically also egotistical! TL;DR (again) Saying "Finally its over!" after getting a WR is a very normal reaction to have. Its not exactly the same as saying "The run is dead" but the emotional connotation has a lot of overlap. If I were to get a bit personal for a second...I have to ask...why does this bother you so much? I'm not trying to shame you...I'm genuinely curious to know why you feel so personally about this...

A year and a half. If this guy has chosen to dedicate himself to world domination instead of video games, we'd all be greeting each other with a "Glory to Lord Poopins" right now
Sometimes I simultaneously go "man what's so important about a five second difference between these two speed runs" and "the amount of dedication and effort that went into bringing this time down even by a single second is tremendous and absolutely insane"
It may not be speedrunning, but it's amazing how much it may relate. Putting up with a lot of hard work and tons of disappointment can be disheartening, but it's amazing to think what's possible with great tenacity.
At the end of these videos I just cannot help myself but tearing up. But this one... This one is even more special. Going through a hard time seeing this man's determination for something others would consider absolutely meaningless is the inspiration I need right now.
I find it meaningless. On the one hand, I grant that all human pursuits are essentially meaningless in the "little blue dot" sense. But beating beating boring old side-scrolling video games fast by exploiting glitches is the bottomless abyss of meaninglessness. I'm not saying it's not hard - it seems impossibly hard. But the challenge is not so much one of hand-eye coordination, attention to detail, and determination (of course it is those things too), but more so having the patience to slog through endless hours of executing the same mind-numbing patterns over and over and over again. Looking for new timesaving patterns seems moderately less boring. The whole thing just sounds totally exhausting in a soul sucking existential way. I cannot imagine that any person wouldn't find mastering an instrument or some other art form to be more rewarding. All this being said, I am (mostly) neurotypical and this speed-running world seems suited more for autistic minds.
@@lashankuanetteshesothicc4242 I would say something about how part of the phsycological meaning that people accosiate with speedrunning has to do with games being an interactive form of expression...but that's kinda stretching it... Its funny you mention your neurotypical...I'll admit I have autism...I've dabbled with speedrunning a little bit and musical insturments...and let me tell you your analogy is kinda bad (no offense lol). I should clarify that I personally found speedrunning to be pretty boring/frustrating a lot of the time...at best I get a sense of "relief" that the grind is over if I managed to get the time I wanted. With instruments I get more out of composing a song, but that requires inspiration...in which case can be attributed to any creative endeavor...as for actually playing an instrument... I'll be honest...its no different logistically from playing a video game. You press buttons in a certain order to make sounds. Its like a game but you remove the game and replace the video with sound. But I just noticed you typed "other art form" so maybe that's where the key is...but then again...as I just realized by typing this... I've been trying to make yt vids for a while now...long story short I'm doing horrible at it, too insecure to make anything I'm content with. Tho the speedrun video I have up I have zero regrets...because that video is all effort no gimmick...you can see clearly the results of said effort...I don't feel like I'm hiding anything with it, thus no shame can be attatched to it. TL;DR Sometimes things that seem meaningless/impersonal are actually personal/meaningful in ways that aren't obvious on the surface. Its easy to look at something like "anti social math that reduces interactive art into a mindless grind" to be meaningless but there's a beauty in the journey that gets you there...even if its just for that individual. I think that's the key...its meaningful for the individual...otherwise they wouldn't do it...I know that sounds cheesy but I'm starting to realize how true that is! (as an extra acecdote I do generally perfer grinding a fighting game over a speedgame...but its hard to consistantly find people to play with who are on your level...lol :P)
I'm not sure I agree with chalking his saying that the game is dead up to ego. I think I'd catch myself saying something similar if I stuck a run that has a shelf life of at least 2 years if not more at the top. Little reason not to when you're in a league of your own, in a game whose speedrunning scene is sizeable but by no means massive and there's no one pushing your WR. There's other ways to get dethroned out of the blue like the discovery of a new strat or the emergence of a prodigy like beco but both of those are inherently unpredictable and hardly worth staking your money on. Hence why I doubt jimmy truly meant to imply the game's never seeing another WR, if he was though then it is indeed a fool's errand that never goes well for the person running it lol.
Right? I opened youtube, saw that this was uploaded a few seconds ago and was immediately like "I don't even know what a jimmypoopins is, but apparently this is what I have to do for the next 44 minutes"

He’s done Mario and Wii Sports games. But he does videos on games I have no clue how to play and end up blown away by his speedrun breakdowns every time!
Wow, Jimmy committed not to a WR or a PB or anything else. He just committed to his own abilities. He just committed to see how far he could push his own skills. Inspiring.

It’s great to have a rival who can push you to your limits. I don’t and I’ve tried beating myself everyday but it’s not the same. Well done Jimmy and thank you SS.
Sorry if I'm wrong, but the way I saw the masterfully done ending of the video, at the end the quest to beat Jimmy wasn't to be taken by Beco, but by Jimmy himself. To stretch that to say that he did it just because of Beco, for me, doesn't cling.
453 days of determination. 453 days of hope whether new strategies will pay off or not. 453 days of the same game over and over and over. Watching Jimmy grind this game every day for over a year from the time I started speedrunning was truly an inspiration. I will never forget raiding Jimmy during the aftermath of that 9:53 run without realizing what I had just walked into.
I'm curious, I have a few questions about the Jimmy's stream. (1) how many people follow an stream like that fore more than a few weeks without results? (2) does the speed runner ever checks the chat? (3) do viewers chat with each other while Jimmy plays?
@@kefkaFollowerIt depends on the game, but usually there are rest points in runs where the streamers interact with chat, and there's also a lot of jokes and banter going on in the chat themselves. Not sure how it would go in a Ninja Gaiden 2 though, that game is pretty hectic.
Can we just take a minute and acknowledge the work that Summoning Salt constantly cranks out? This is riveting, like a good book that is hard to put down, and he makes an average Joe like me become completely engulfed in speed running. That takes some serious talent. Thank you Summoning Salt.

I feel like the 3 and a half year break was really good for jimmy. He's like two different people when running the game. He sounds just so much more passionate and overjoyed when he improves his runs; compared to before the hiatus.
It's really interesting seeing a video from SS that, instead of following a speedrun gradually being lowered, skipping between various people and their attempted runs, until finally one speedrunner succeeds in all the tricks described earlier... we have the structure almost completely flipped in this video. Jimmypoopins succeeded in pulling off all the tricks, which were only even described after his run was finished. We started with the winner, who had already achieved the impossible. Now we have to gradually let others in, to pull off the even more impossible.
@@pjbpiano I feel the same. I loved playing Ninja Gaiden, but I was terrible at it. My cousin was way better and that's the only way I got to see the later levels back in the day. Cool to see them in such detail now.

Was Ninja Gaiden 2 ever one of the games you speedran seriously before you concentrated on the few that you do now?
@@apollolux I played and ran the Punchout games first, but I did pick up learning Ninja Gaiden II for that tournament that was mentioned briefly in the video.
There were tons of people who had so much experience with the game, so I didn't stand a chance lol, but it was a lot of fun!
@@zallard1 Groovy stuff! I only ever played NG2 casually as a kid and didn't have the dexterity back then to get past the fourth stage, so it's one of those games like SMB1 and Zelda 1 that haunted me for years until finally beating it for the first time as an adult.
@repentandbelieveinJesusChrist2no
I love how he went from a cold "game is dead" to a heartfelt cry. Amazing stuff.
He needed to be humbled before he achieved ultimate glory ❤️
Because the first time he really did kill it and achieved a clean WR, the second time it was a hard and long grind to beat someone with magic wall jump fingers.

I love how his reactions changed to the records. First subdued, second really excited, and 3rd emotional. And now he had a nice documentary celebrating that, well done Jimmy
First one wasn't subdued, it was egotistical... it honestly made me hate him alittle bit
@@Alienrun Please stop excusing egotistical behavior... it doesn't help anyone😒

Sometimes I simultaneously go "man what's so important about a five second difference between these two speed runs" and "the amount of dedication and effort that went into bringing this time down even by a single second is tremendous and absolutely insane"
Pareto principle
Just got back from possibly the worst 12 hour shift, words cannot describe how much this brightened my mood today. Thank you, bud.
It's hard to explain. I don't even speedrun, but summoning salt has a way of capturing the beauty of these moments that drive me to emotions.
@@Pandaman64 Exactly!
Pathetic lmao crying over someone u don’t know getting a record in something nobody plays? Your parents failed society
I'm in awe of the brutal dedication jimmypoopins showed here. The difference between his ego from his 10:07 to his humble WR is so satisfying to see.
It’s basically an obligation to stop whatever you’re doing to watch the new Summoning Salt video.

I feel like the 3 and a half year break was really good for jimmy. He's like two different people when running the game. He sounds just so much more passionate and overjoyed when he improves his runs; compared to before the hiatus.
The moment of clarity (and music that goes with it) when it starts the wr run after a billion attempts is always the best part of a SS vid
I love seeing folks speedrunning games I could never beat in an entire summer as a kid.
IKR? 😂
@@pjbpiano totally. It just blows my mind watching them not only them beat these games in like an hour but then drive it down to like ten minutes. 😂
@@dr.maples, I just got to the point where I was content watching them play because I realized I could never finish it. 😂
@@pjbpiano I feel the same. I loved playing Ninja Gaiden, but I was terrible at it. My cousin was way better and that's the only way I got to see the later levels back in the day. Cool to see them in such detail now.
I liked how with other videos like this, the runner the video is about is usually dethroned by the end of it, but with this one, Jimmy is dethroned and we find him back on top. Sweet ending to the video!
Summoning Salt is the only person who can make me interested in literally anything. Even if I’ve never heard about it before, I’m completely glued to the screen for 30-45 mins straight. Keep up the great work man!
For me it's Salt and Jon Bois.
I have to say, this is some of the best storytelling I have seen in a LONG time. The twists and turns and the way that you able to captivate your audience is incredible. I knew nothing about NG2 and had little to no interest in it, but the way you told the story and the entire journey, it just didn't matter. And the twist at the end.. Just amazing. Really well done. I hope youtubers like you never disappear and that long form content becomes the meta again because of people like you. The effort and time spent on this video really showed through. Keep up the good work and if it isn't clear yet, I love your videos! 👍
There is something to Summoning Salt’s videos that are so captivating. Even going and watching other videos and creators inside this genre nobody does it in the way Summoning Salt. Storytelling, pacing, editing and choice of footage and diagrams/info figures that make his videos better
How you manage to take both the inane and the absurd and spin it into the most intriguing drama is a skill that nobody else juggles like you do. You are awesome and I eagerly look forward to each and every future offering.
Drama is anywhere where you find emotion and when people legimately commit *years* into something you know damn well there's some kind of emotion attached.
I will never get tired of hearing SummoningSalt say a name like jimmypoopins with utmost seriousness
Hard not to get teary at the end there. I could feel Jimmy's relief. All that hard work finally paid off. Great video as always.
Goddamn…when that HOME track starts and the beat kicks in, I get goosebumps every damn time.
When Jimmy and Beco began to compete for the sub-10, that's when the real test of what's possible begins.
I love it when the best in the world compete together at the same time to beat the world record, it's one of my favorite things in speedrunning
I can feel the emotion and fun between jimmy and beco. I'm sure they'll never forget this, moments are all we have.
That is like saying romance is the key to love. There are actually better things than a great moment in time. For example, I have healed all of the problems in my body with nutrition primarily and I can look back and be thankful that I am living in a way that was not even imaginable.
@@sigurdthebluegood for you little bro
@@sigurdtheblueNo one likes you
As someone who is married to a person with epilepsy. It is so great to see someone like you make that notice at the start of the video. Thank you for always being a class act.
This man never releases anything but top tier content. Not a single miss in his entire library.
I'm overjoyed to see Arcus come back! The lore continues!
Yeah...here comes the toxic summoning salt members again 😥 Arcus doesn't deserve it. I literally got over it yesterday and now they put him in another video...
Cripes.
@@hicknopunkwhat even happened before?
@@moxleymox3217 this dude is just being a weirdo trying to gatekeep summoning salt viewers from arcus lmao, he keeps saying that arcus kept getting toxic comments when he's the only toxic one
I literally forced myself to do homework in order to treat myself a Summoning Salt video. What a great night. Thank you for your effort at documenting this and making it exciting
hey, i'm proud of you for doing your homework :)
Near the start of the video I was thinking "wow, so nice of jimmy to give the "dead game" boost to other runners before bowing out!" and then the man goes and uses the boost himself to get to the top again!
What a beautiful story. 453 days at it. There's no way you don't come out the other side of something like that a little changed, for the better I think!
Beautiful. Inspirational. Never thought I'd cry over a speed run. After that 453 day journey.. damn. So happy he got it.
