Honestly what really differentiates Skyrim from Oblivion is Atmosphere; in Skyrim, everyone is "The Dragonborn" - a legend, someone who is destined to defeat Alduin and dragonkind. I remember the first time playing Skyrim killing the first dragon; I had goosebumps at how incredibly awesome an experience it was, I couldn't put down the game for a month at least... However. Soon, I was too strong to lose, even if I wanted to. I know in a fantasy RPG, we all would like to feel empowered, but it just didn't feel complimentary to me...I felt like I was playing a game, with Skyrim. I'd be looking at the variables, I'd be thinking outside the 4th wall mostly. I was never under an illusion this was a game. People repeated the same quotes incessantly; how many of you here in the comment section could rehearse what Adrianna Avenici said, word for word? The adrenaline soon faded, and eventually, I saw the crippling flaw with Skyrim ( And incidentally it's the exact same as what turned me off with Fallout 3 a long time ago ) *It was designed for me to play once at the time and go, "Wow, wee! Look at this, look at that!" there was no 'replayability' persay; in Oblivion, I could waste my life just walking around, talking to people, almost deluding myself that I was really there* I remember having a dozen xbox 360 accounts all full with save slots; I wanted to be a different person, to live a different life, it WAS an Rpg! Play the civil war, play it on the other side, realize both sides are the exact same... generic fetch-quests. I felt the same way you did playing Oblivion; being so immersed in the world. I mean in Skyrim whenever you enter a city, you were greeted with some unique scripted event that made it feel like the world was real. Obviously after multiple play-throughs, that has less of an effect and it becomes obvious it was scripted for your arrival, but it was still "unique" and was supposed to make it feel like the world was alive... they also had the "radiant" system where family could replace a dead character as a quest-giver, yet that didn't feel real either. And it bugs me because I WANT to be a videogame developer after I'm done with my studies, yet even I can't figure out how a game with potatoes for characters felt real. Maybe it was all the dialogue? Despite every character sounding the same and talking about the same crap, it just made it feel like people were interacting and not just running a play for when the player arrived.
Absolutely agree. Currently traveling Asia with one single game installed on my stealth - Oblivion. All of these years later the magic is the same. Absolutely brilliant. Would highly recommend a return should anyone be considering it.

It has no real meaning because everyone who plays Skyrim is the Dragonborn, whether they're a thief, mage, warrior, or some dude runs around naked punching people. In Oblivion, you're just in a jail cell the Emperor went through, *the world is bigger than you as a player* ( This is a very, *very* important point of *ANY* good RPG ) it still coddled the player a little, and I prefer that it skipped the jail entirely on new character creation, but at the end of the day you were much more of a blank slate - in order to change the world you had to go ahead and do it. Or not, you could just take the opportunity to join the dark brotherhood... The player shouldn't get brownie points for being the player - that's just 4th wall masturbation, they should feel like they're a part of the world around them, otherwise they're never going to truly enjoy being a part of the world because they were always privileged.
i remember the good days i had no worries, no problems i use to come home every day from school and stay up all night playing this game. I found myself going to the crunchy snowy hills of bruma and listening to the music just to look at the scenery. Now that im older i look back on this and cry because i realize things were so much different i had such a different veiw on the world. My advice is dont be afraid to do things like this it just means your a kid. Enjoy the little things if ur happy.
spot on! When i found out about this game it was snowing outside, and whenever you play it a 2nd or a 3rd time, your brain associates it with the feeling of holidays. The same thing happened when i bought Overlord on Christmas in 2007. If i play that game in July, it will suddenly feel like Christmas again, doesn't matter how hot it is.

I feel AWFUL for picking this up so late. I got it in 2014, back when I was VERY new to gaming, though my parents would only let me play games rated "E". Nowadays, I'm playing Witcher and Saints Row, but that's besides the point. So, i go into my local Gamestop and I i find a game called Oblivion. It was VERY cheap, like $5. I recognized the Elder Scrolls name, as my friend and 3rd grade teacher (my favorite thus far) played Skyrim. I think to myself, why not get Oblivion. i spent the car ride home staring at awe at the screenshots (remember, the most graphically intense game I could play was madden, which i dropped after playing Oblivion. So, I wait 'till night, and turn on Oblivion. I stared in awe at the intro cutscene, and was terrified of the starter dungeon. The music and the lighting all contributed to a very, very eerie atmosphere. the rest of my tales involve finding the missing painter, exploring Vilverlin 'till I reached the bottom, found the Umbra sword, became a pilgrim of the Nine, and last but not least, *ALL* of Shivering Isles (Are any of you surprised?) i recently grabbed the PC port and I'm having a lot of fun playing around with enhanced graphics, which can really help bring the atmosphere to an even higher level. Now, I do think it is FAR better than Skyrim, as I'm a big fan of RPG's (technically, most games are RPG's, but i mean the skill based character adventure games, like Oblivion or even the earlier games like Daggerfall), and Skyrim, really doesn't feel like an RPG. And that godawful leveling. I didn't like I was becoming a better archer, i felt I just had another bullsh*t perk at my disposal, such as "You do 20% more damage with a bow.. in a game like Oblivion, my damage with a bow would increase as i use bows or get training in them. Though increasing these skill numbers in Oblivion is a little slow. Overall, though, Oblivion is worth a damn; don't let it fade into obscurity
Oblivion and Skyrim both aint RPG.. it has the elements, but we all know it's not.. all enemies scaling with you and the world changes when you gain a level. What's the point leveling up if you will be matched against monsters that will evolve with you at the same time. To me it wasn't important to level up at all.. except for the grinding part to have a lot of gold.. so I had to gain more STR to carry more items. If they weren't lazy they could've made the world of Oblivion more challenging.. you are forced to go for example to very closest city to get quets and you can fight around the city and only easy monsters will be around, but further you go on the map stronger monsters will appear, but if you go back to the 1st town and outside.. the monster would be still @ level 1, but you still would be able to gain experience points from those and after you've gained enough levels than you could go further on the map to explore more. Now that's a true RPG.. this is just a game IMO hack/slash/adventure with many many quests.. But RPG.. not really. It's more a skilltree this way. they should've left it out if they didn't care much for high levels or RPG future and just reward the player with better equipment so that will be your upgrade. Well it's what it is.. If I play Oblivion i'm doing it for the quests alone, but as true rpg lover I will have to play another game like Gothic/Risen 1/ Dragons Dogma
yes... this is magical and the OST is better than Skyrim. This one is more catchy and you will yearn to go back to play it for the OST alone.. in Skyrim not as much

lol are you me? This is literally how I felt about skyrim. There was something so magical about Oblivion, I still play it even after playing Skyrim for well over 300 hours.
Same goes with me, I go to college by bicycle everyday. My iphone filled with these soundtracks. One day, I was spotted by officer wearing heatphones while riding a bicycle on road, I felt like, "Stop right there you criminal" quote poped up in my mind. :D
how can a game make you this nostalgic? THIS game is the only one that makes me feel this way. I mean, how can anyone actually dislike this game? Why I loved oblivion; it gave a sense of a fulfilled, civil world. The music, the forests, all a little bit of Imperial paradise. In Skyrim, it's beautiful too, but... not in the same way.
This hit with me with so much nostalgia and memories, almost couldn't listen to it. Its weird, game only came out 6 years ago and it feels so distant. The greatest memories are the most depressing.

If im going to be honest this game is the best elder scrolls game. I remember when first playing it, Walking around in the Cave under the prison. I remember when I came out and saw the big Beautiful view of water outside the imperial city. I remember Walking around in the cities, impressed by all of the opportunities the game had. Sometimes I just wish that all of this was real, that you could experience Tamriel for real.
Ahhhh Oblivion... Wish that Bethesda would make an ES just like Oblivion... Skyrim was fun and all but it just wasn't... It didn't have the charm that Oblivion had.
You are saying what everyone said about morrowind. Nostalgia applies to the one you grew up with, that special game that you feel connected with. All aspects of that game bear a similar connection to you. AKA, oblivion players (me), feel it has more than skyrim, just as morrowind players feel that morrowind has more than oblivion.
You know, I have the same thoughts about Morrowind, and find myself enjoying Skyrim more than Oblivion. I think its more that having loved your "first" Elder Scrolls so much, you put a lot of faith into the next one. To me, Oblivion just couldn't recapture the magic, not because of its shortcomings, but because of my own expectations. I still loved it of course. Now though, I have come to accept Morrowinds place in history, and I can move on. I think this is why Skyrim is such a joy for me.

I fucking love Skyrim and it's definitely my favorite TES, but Oblivion was my first and I'll never forget the feeling of exiting the sewers for the first time.. and seeing that amazing landscape. The realization of being able to walk almost everywhere, just mind blowing.

Oblivion was so much more...inspiring than Skyrim, and thats saying something! There was just something that had me coming back and playing it for months and months without it getting old...Maybe it was that feeling of wonder and fantasy that Skyrim just didn't have...Maybe I just liked the Colovian atmosphere more...Or perhaps since Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls game, it's just my outlook. Nonetheless, the magic will always be with me, and I'll be happy to play it for years to come :)

And at that time i had really slow PC, but i was still trying to run Oblivion, atleast at medium settings, because that game, that world and atmosphere was so good, it was like a lucid dream for me:) But Skyrim...with todays technology...oh those litle details everywhere. And with mods i make Skyrim like my own magical world, another dimension where i can live:)
I've been let down by so many sequels to various games, but I feel this was a excellent addition to the elder scrolls title, especially after Morrowind which really set the bar IMO. The general census seems to be Skyrim is a great game, but only an average elder scrolls game, and I'd agree with that just based off this music, fucking magical.
I disagree, I found Skyrim's rough nature extremely beautiful as it looked so hostile but gorgeous at once. It fascinated me way more than Cyrodiil did. Loved both games though!

What's the point leveling up if you will be matched against monsters that will evolve with you at the same time. To me it wasn't important to level up at all.. except for the grinding part to have a lot of gold.. so I had to gain more STR to carry more items. If they weren't lazy they could've made the world of Oblivion more challenging.. you are forced to go for example to very closest city to get quets and you can fight around the city and only easy monsters will be around, but further you go on the map stronger monsters will appear, but if you go back to the 1st town and outside.. the monster would be still @ level 1, but you still would be able to gain experience points from those and after you've gained enough levels than you could go further on the map to explore more. Now that's a true RPG.. this is just a game IMO hack/slash/adventure with many many quests.. But RPG.. not really. It's more a skilltree this way. they should've left it out if they didn't care much for high levels or RPG future and just reward the player with better equipment so that will be your upgrade. Well it's what it is.. If I play Oblivion i'm doing it for the quests alone, but as true rpg lover I will have to play another game like Gothic/Risen 1/ Dragons Dogma

lol are you me? This is literally how I felt about skyrim. There was something so magical about Oblivion, I still play it even after playing Skyrim for well over 300 hours.
Same goes with me, I go to college by bicycle everyday. My iphone filled with these soundtracks. One day, I was spotted by officer wearing heatphones while riding a bicycle on road, I felt like, "Stop right there you criminal" quote poped up in my mind. :D

Why I loved oblivion; it gave a sense of a fulfilled, civil world. The music, the forests, all a little bit of Imperial paradise. In Skyrim, it's beautiful too, but... not in the same way.

If im going to be honest this game is the best elder scrolls game. I remember when first playing it, Walking around in the Cave under the prison. I remember when I came out and saw the big Beautiful view of water outside the imperial city. I remember Walking around in the cities, impressed by all of the opportunities the game had.
Sometimes I just wish that all of this was real, that you could experience Tamriel for real.

You are saying what everyone said about morrowind. Nostalgia applies to the one you grew up with, that special game that you feel connected with. All aspects of that game bear a similar connection to you. AKA, oblivion players (me), feel it has more than skyrim, just as morrowind players feel that morrowind has more than oblivion.
You know, I have the same thoughts about Morrowind, and find myself enjoying Skyrim more than Oblivion. I think its more that having loved your "first" Elder Scrolls so much, you put a lot of faith into the next one. To me, Oblivion just couldn't recapture the magic, not because of its shortcomings, but because of my own expectations. I still loved it of course. Now though, I have come to accept Morrowinds place in history, and I can move on. I think this is why Skyrim is such a joy for me.

I fucking love Skyrim and it's definitely my favorite TES, but Oblivion was my first and I'll never forget the feeling of exiting the sewers for the first time.. and seeing that amazing landscape. The realization of being able to walk almost everywhere, just mind blowing.

Oblivion was so much more...inspiring than Skyrim, and thats saying something! There was just something that had me coming back and playing it for months and months without it getting old...Maybe it was that feeling of wonder and fantasy that Skyrim just didn't have...Maybe I just liked the Colovian atmosphere more...Or perhaps since Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls game, it's just my outlook. Nonetheless, the magic will always be with me, and I'll be happy to play it for years to come :)

And at that time i had really slow PC, but i was still trying to run Oblivion, atleast at medium settings, because that game, that world and atmosphere was so good, it was like a lucid dream for me:) But Skyrim...with todays technology...oh those litle details everywhere. And with mods i make Skyrim like my own magical world, another dimension where i can live:)

I've been let down by so many sequels to various games, but I feel this was a excellent addition to the elder scrolls title, especially after Morrowind which really set the bar IMO. The general census seems to be Skyrim is a great game, but only an average elder scrolls game, and I'd agree with that just based off this music, fucking magical.
I disagree, I found Skyrim's rough nature extremely beautiful as it looked so hostile but gorgeous at once. It fascinated me way more than Cyrodiil did. Loved both games though!

Yes, I myself prefer the orchestra and melody of Oblivion far more :) Skyrim is beautiful too, but it's more ambient, which is fine, imho, I just like this far more! Never the less, Soule is a genius!
