  • I recently had the chance of a lifetime to meet and interview Sir David Attenborough whilst he was shooting his major new movie ‘A Life On Our Planet'. Sir David has always been a hero of mine. He introduced us to the natural world, and now he is telling his greatest story yet. It is both terrifying and inspiring in equal measure and a stark reminder of the urgent need for climate action.
The film is available on Netflix. If you’ve had a chance to watch it, I would love to know your thoughts in the comments below.

My sister and I cried at one point while watching “A life on our planet”. We just looked at each other with tears in our eyes. It was like a moment where we both knew that this is absolutely devastating. Seeing what is and what has been happening to our planet breaks my heart. Seeing how what *we* do impacts our ecosystem and our wildlife is heart wrenching.
Thank you Jack for being the RUclipsr I’ve always needed since 2014. You used your platform for 14-year-old who never knew what was happening, to inform young minds about something I never knew existed - climate change. Now at 20 years old, I still thank you. Its amazing to see that you were able to take part of something so astonishing.

Hi Taqiyah, thank you for sharing your experience of watching the film. I also cried watching it. It can be really hard to process the information around climate change and it's natural to grieve for what is being lost. However, there is also so much reason for optimism. The next 10 years are an opportunity for humanity to come together and re-think the many aspects of our society that don't work. It's a chance to create a ton of new jobs and in the process build a fairer and greener society that works for the many and not just the few!

@@JackHarries Hi Jack, I live in South Africa- a developing country. The hardest obstacle for the working class as well as the middle class is that going green, using renewable energy, is quiet expensive. Driving around Cape Town, you would see that the solar panels installed are only on the RDP houses- Reconstruction and Development Programme houses- freely since they are government owned. And on the upper class houses since they are able to afford it. What I also noticed is that eating healthier or having a vegan based diet i.e. buying free range or buying fresh fruits/vegetables, is very expensive compared to buying processed food. Therefore, since it is more affordable people tend to buy the processed food. Do you think that in future, for the developing countries, it would be more affordable to use renewable energy?

Terrified is the perfect word. The overwhelming sense of not being able to change anything because the problem is "so big"? I'm struggling with that whenever I watch any nature documentaries now. I loved them as a child, was always an exploring, outdoors-y kid (and still am at 20) but now I can't look at them without the knowledge, that this beauty is in so much danger and might not even be there anymore in what 10, 20 years? The thought of how the world might look in 20 years if nothing changes? Terrifying.
Edit: i havent seen sir davids new movie yet, I really want to though, but I need a calmer state of mind to not have a breakdown over it after..

Hi Lisa - you're completely right in how scary it feels! But I would definitely recommend watching the film even though you feel anxious about it all - he talks about the things we can do to enact change and what is possible. I'm pregnant atm and at times was thinking "what the hell am I brining our child into", but by the end of the film, I felt hopeful that we can get this right and the world and human kind can actually thrive together.

Hi Jack, great video and a natural interviewer, especially when in the presence of Sir David Attenborough. I actually took my mum along to the cinema to watch the new life on this planet film, as my mum does not really agree/care about the climate changing. She left the cinema wanting to go plant-based, and full of new information that bothered her to a degree. I was shocked myself, but it goes to show these films really do make a difference.
We actually met last year when you did a Q&A talk, I spoke to you about my eco friendly dog walking business. It would be good to catch up, as I would love to speak with you for my documentary I am in the middle of filming, talking about how climate change not only will and is effecting humans, but how it will effect our pets as well.
Once again great video and I will continue to follow your content on all platforms. Great stuff!

I cried for most of that film. I have watched Mr. Attenborough for many many years and I look up to him, so for him to say these things, that actions we take now WILL affect us, me & you, later in life is terrifying and sad. I try to spread the word about this to everyone, and I really hope that everybody sees the film, and take action. I am really afraid of the future, I have really bad anxiety about it because I feel like what I do won´t help, but I still try to make decisions that are thought through. I just wish for a happy and bright future, and that we all listen to this wise man.
I also want to add that I love people like you raising your voice for something as important as this! I remember watching you and Finn opening fan mail, and seeing you now is very inspiring.

It feels like since Netflix has made the Our Planet series free, I have become more concerned with nature. I have become more open to what's happening on earth, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. And that film made me cry for the first time because it described the natural world that is so fragile. And David Attenborough's latest film made me cry even louder. And these two films instantly changed my aim.

It’s so important that people realize the severity of our problem of climate change. No one could detail it better than someone who has devoted his entire life to educating people about wildlife like Attenborough had. I’ve had the reminder set on my phone for months to see his new film and it definitely didn’t disappoint. It’s truly a masterpiece and it’s so rewarding to see the account of such a great leader come together perfectly.

Without wanting to put a lot of pressure on you (because they are mighty shoes to fill), I hope very much Jack that you will be one of the ones to take the torch onward from Sir David when he no longer makes films.
Not necessarily about the pure look at animals and plants in the form of natural history documentary (although I'd still listen to you anytime!), but in terms of his later work on climate activism. You are in a position to take this on, you also have the talent and passion to do so. Watching the Our Planet series on one hand felt really nostalgic because I sometimes found myself watching with open an mouth and sparkling eyes just like the 10 year old me had been watching the video tapes of his other shows. On the other hand it was terrifying to realize that all that beauty can be lost and it will be our fault as a species. And it will happen pretty soon if we don't change our ways almost immediately. Also the fact that all the nations of the world has to work together as one seems almost impossible to me at the current state. And it is deeply disapointing that the ones with the reins in their hands won't make solving the climate crisis their priority. How could someone just choose power and greed and be so ignorant when our planet as we know it is at stake? So surely a lot of eyes must be opened and that's where you guys come into the picture doing all that amazing work, putting in so much effort and speak to many hearts.
Nature has given me and all of us sooo much. It is time we gave something back! And that is making a change which starts with each and every one of us.

I watched the film today, after waiting months for its arrival. I knew it was going to be good, but I never thought it would make me so emotional as it did. It sounded an alarm in my head and struck anger within me as well. Thinking that just we humans have caused this, it's a disgrace. I truly hope that as many people can see this film as possible. I am an environmental studies student and so this film was extremely important to me, as is Sir David. I sent the information about the documentary to all of my professors and am hoping they will share it with all the students. It is vital that people watch this and educate themselves on the state of our planet. And that will hopefully strike change. The film was a masterpiece and it is the perfect film to describe what is going on within climate change. David Attenborough has always been an inspiration to me so when he went silent and sat thinking about what we have done to our planet, it broke my heart. He has been lucky enough to travel and see all of these amazing creatures and habitats and just the same, he has seen them be destroyed, demolished, and killed. This truly is a wake-up call. The section where he described what the future will look like if nothing is done, made me just cry my eyes out. The natural world is something we need to take care of, not destroy. We need to do everything we can to heal it. In the end though, like he said, we will destroy ourselves, nature will regenerate.
I loved the film though, it was everything I had hoped for. And I encourage everyone to watch it. We need to educate and acknowledge the climate crisis before it's too late.

Hi Imogen, thanks for your comment. I agree, I wasn't prepared for how emotional and moving the film would be. This is the most important story of our time and there's no better narrator than Sir David Attenborough.

This is my dream!! I’m so jealous!! I am also so impressed with how Jack has actually used his platform as a means of enacting change and pushing a vitally important message, not just trying to sell us crap we don’t need, disguised as a pointless daily vlog. I’m studying at uni to hopefully one day work in international environmental policy implementation, so I hope, in David Attenborough’s legacy, I can help, even a tiny bit, to protect what he loves, and what we should all care deeply about!

This is exactly the type of content that we need nowadays! As you mentioned Sir David's story is *terrifying and inspiring* . I hope people that have the means and platform to share this vital information like you; keep doing this. Regardless of how hard we cry and how hard it is to hear and *see* the truth (since every time I watch a nature documentary I cry myself to sleep), it is needed to take action; rather sooner than later. It is so nice to see this type of content coming from RUclipsrs and content creators that have built a strong following for so many years and are using it for good. Watching more and more content like this makes me hopeful about the work our generation is doing and I have no doubt that having studied environmental studies was an amazing decision💜
Welcome back! I'm excited for what's to come 🖤:)

I decided to devote my career to combating the climate crisis a couple years ago and am about to finish my first year uni.
Whilst I am so happy that in the past couple of years particularly people are finally acknowledging the issue, I find it hard not to be angry at older generations. So many acknowledge it as an issue amongst other world issues but don't seem to genuinely show concern.
I'm so worried that real change on a global scale with decision-makers will come too late. I only hope that us that know and care will bring about this change effectively.
It's okay to feel negative emotions about uncertain and complex situations like this. Thanks for raising so much awareness Jack

I loved the movie so much. As I bawled my eyes out, I realised that living in complete harmony with the world isn't an utopia, it's a necessity. Our ideas and ambition led us to this point, and that's exactly what's going to get us out of this crisis. "The problem is the solution"

This was so inspirational Jack I really enjoyed watching it and thought you put yourself across so well!! I have just graduated and now live back in Bristol with my parents and so keen to do something similar to what your doing/ ie be a creator. My family friend directed on a project with Attenborough for a dinosaur programme for the BBC, Charlotte Scott, and she said it was incredibly stressful but rewarding! And at uni was encouraged to watch a lot of programmes in student living from geography friends 😂 I’m applying for the work experience with Silverback films, and really want to do it. It’s so great to see how far you’ve come. Olivia

The film really laid out the facts plain and simple, the stark reality we’re facing as a species, but what resonated with me most was David’s lack of nihilism. I think it’s easy to switch off and accept doomsday when we’re bombarded with climate fear by media sources.
Great watch, keep up the good work

The Documentary was absolutely fantastic but emotional and heartbreaking at the same time. it's an awe-inspiring reminder of how all the climates across the planet are interconnected, and we as the so-called keepers of the Earth should rise up to do what we can to maintain life/nature as best we can -- which incidentally includes OUR own as humans, as we too are an inter-connected part of the chain .
