    Here’s a simple solution.
Rosemary: Hey Sage, why don’t you use magic to make a portal everybody seems to pull them out of thin air.
Sage: First, I haven’t practiced that kind yet. And second it is an advanced level Magic that unless you know exactly what your doing can lead to disastrous results.

Or better yet, she could have tried contacting her father in every way imaginable - letters, crystal balls, travelling, asking someone to deliver the message personally, travelling herself -, but all of these options fail somehow -the letters get intercepted, interference prevents crystal balls from working, the person she sends gets murdered, she herself nearly gets killed trying to travel. That way summoning the demon doesn't sound like a stupid idea, since it's literally the only thing she can try now!
That also gives her a reason to not want to tell the teachers - she doesn't know how she got intercepted every time she tried to contact her father, so she suspects one of the school staff members (or more) is a spy, and until they can figure out who it is, they can't reveal what they know to anyone, or else they could put themselves and others at risk.
This could also lead to a mini arc where the girls suspect the trans teacher, leading to the doppelganger battle as a climax!

When you see a character being called a “genius” because they can invent a raygun or something, it’s usually complete nonsense when actually analyzed. So, it’s more like a super power, where a character can break reality, than being actual intelligence.
But if the character does something clever and understandable to overcome an obstacle, they just simply came up with that clever thing. In other words intelligence. Which the author must have as well, since they were the one who truly came up with it.

Loom at dr.stone or death note or breaking bad, all of those have characters with genius level intellect, superhuman intellect in the case of the first two. They are smarter than the writers, But the authors can write them because of all the advantages they have over the characters.

That kind of storytelling can only be pulled off by an intelligent and clever writer. The writers character may be technically 'smarter' than they are but they only appear that way because of the writers ability to use the narrative to control how the audience percieves everything the character can do. Like @Frank West mentioned about the 'genius' characters that when actually analyzed dont hold up. The writer doesnt have the skills to properly hide the gaps.
So while writing smart characters because youre smart and writing smart characters because youre a good writer are two different skills they both still require a measure of experience to execute.

Or maybe ask one of the other students that we saw that were featured in the title screen. Oh, wait... No, those are just background mannequins that they placed randomly throughout the school. Great job guys, I'm sure those scarecrows will fend off the weird empty atmosphere that this supposedly bustling city has...
    -Long off topic rant coming-
Honestly, budget or not, this show really doesn't want anyone to dare to upstage their precious main characters... Or even acknowledge that they technically fail their classes when given certain rules to tasks.
Like, shouldn't the teachers have noticed the main girls were missing in the caves, or that they came back after dark? Did they think they got scared too and abandoned the mission? Like, I would hope that there was a rescue search out looking for them...
Another example is the obstacle race where the teacher says that they can't use magic to make it through. Like, Snapdragon, Sage, and Amarryllis all failed. Even if they didn't want to upset their precious Sage, I thought for sure that they would tell off Amarryllis for that clique bully take down satisfaction... They don't even stroke the ego of the main characters when they do succeed in their classes, for that audience projection aspect that I thought was why the magic school setting was so popular. Get kudos from your favorite teachers and all... It really just solidifies that this show really didn't need to have the school setting if they just wanted wacky magic adventures with no logic.

When you mentioned that they purposely make the characters stupid in order for something to happen, it reminds me that some other shows do this, too. Where they show a character being able to do something, but in the next few episodes they're unable to do said thing. All because they made them stupid just for the sake of the plot. That's one of my pet peeves in animated shows.

Hey! Remember in Avatar the secret tunnel was a maze that constantly changed because giant badger-moles? Or in Labyrinth, it's pointed out that the Labyrinth also shifts and changes? That's like fantasy cave magic writing 101 that could have easily explained why Tyme couldn't get more healing water from the Spirit Oasis. Imagine if the writers show her going down to the hole, only for giant crystals having grown and blocking it. Or a 1-minute montage scene of her exploring the cave and finding out the spring tends to move and its possible it's in a different cave system all together. Then summoning a demon out of last-ditch desperation might make more narrative sense.

But idk if this is good since I came up with most of it whilst I was writing this comment sooo

4-fix most of the voice acting or casting

It's so easy to nerf portals and make them unavailable when they want to escape the cave.
The cave magic makes portals unstable so you can't make one.
    OR
Just say that you have to set the end point up in advance and you're not allowed to do that at school because they don't want random portal runes left everywhere. It makes security into Swiss cheese when students can't secure their portals correctly.

Also Thyme did the demon summon wrong, like she read a leaflet on how to do it and that's it.
    1. Unless your using the demon as an attack beast you want to summon it in the salt circle and be outside the circle, Thyme basically let it loose on the world and was lucky it didn't just run off to murder children.
    2. Unless you literally don't have time to do it you need to make the salt circle harder to break then decadently kicking it, she just made it without digging it into the ground.
    3. Know exactly what you want to say and do before hand and don't deviate, she panicked and didn't know what to do.
    4. Know how to kill and or banish it if things go wrong which they do more often then not, not only did she not know how to banish it she also didn't bring a demon slaying weapon.

I think a cool limitation for some stuff is race-locking or have different kinds of magic like happends in games. For example have portal magic but only DEMONS can use them or highly studied people on demon magic and it's still draining AF since it's a DARK magic, that way you have portals that can make interesting things happening and used as more mundane spells by the demon teacher yet inaccesible for Sage and most of the low level magic users in school and the world over all to easily escape difficult situations.
Also explaining the necessity of Thyme to summon a DEMON to open a portal and talk with her dad, which it's still kinda stupid but at least makes sense why it can't be anything else than a demon.

The dragon stuff feels like something they pull out from thin air. It is so inorganic to the plot, that particular writer really must have no proper solution to that situation and so pull the biggest WTF moment in this show

Snapdragon is another character made to be a moron just to drive the plot, and he's quite a level headed person in this entire series. In Ep 11, the entire plot point of snap beating the shit out of Cal and then that transition talk with caraway all started because he had to say that one line about 'it being peaceful on the water'. I swear to god that made me so angry, I was rolling. Why would he willingly say that for Cal to hear, who is known to be a transphobe and a bully. Why can't it be Cal that's taunting him. Why must Snap sit in that position? Let's face it, it was Snap who instigated that fight. Either he's a moron or he's just a psychopath.
In my headcanon (psychopath); he, on the boat purposely sat in a suggestive position in front of Cal and spoke that one moronic line to bait Cal into taunting him so Snap could initiate a fight. That was what he planned and it work, getting him reprimanded.
Caraway wanted to give snap a chance, but this was all in snap's psychotic plans to be near him. Snap didn't care if he was going to be suspended, as long as he hears validation of transitioning from the one teacher who used transition magic. And it was all that mattered
The triad who accessed him with their mind's eye, actually sensed his psychotic plans to bait that fight. So they justified his suspension because they concluded Snap was the malicious one here, not Cal.
The moron path is just Snap being stupid and getting out of character to drive the plot.
I think I prefer the (psycho) path. It's dark and twisted human psyche.

5:05 "the writers forgot that the characters can do certain things". it is more common that people think. i read in an article that when the concept of sayans transforming into super sayans and their hair turning yellow was introduced, the creator of dragon ball was asked in an interview if the concept had any relation with launch, a previous main character whose hair turned yellow and her personality changed when she sneezed. she stooped showing up on the story altogether so people assumed that her disappearance had something to do with this new plot, some even speculating she could had been an undercover sayan that was watching over goku while growing up. but nop, he stopped using her because he literally forgot she was a character and forgot her powers, they had no relation whatsoever. HE FORGOT ABOUT A CHARACTER THAT FOR A TIME WAS PART OF THE MAIN CAST.

  • @ChairmanMeezy

With regarding with setting up a portal, like you said; we just assume that everyone can.
The writers could have made Sage create a portal, though they could have thought that "Sage just got her terrasphere. She can't create a portal (even though it's a very possible thing to do; even a 5 year old can do it)." Though again, none of this is explained, but it could be something that they thought of behind the scenes.
What makes it even more stupid is even with this explanation, it just doesn't add up. The writers will just throw whatever they want whenever they fell like it. 0 ~ 0 That's why all this is a bit frustrating, and further explains why they really just want to make the characters "stupid" just for the sake of story progression.
I really do enjoy your videos though! My take isn't really backed, but though I'd throw that in there. High Guardian Spice is such a strange series.

While it's not an overly good series, if you read the In Another World With My Smartphone Series the MC gets a gate ability that allows him to use portals with only a handful of limitations. He abuses this ability LIBERALLY! Villain's immune to magical and physical damage? Use a portal to drop him into a container with the stinkiest thing in the world. Golems made of mithril being hard to deal with? Teleport them straight up and let terminal velocity do most of the damage for you. The only reason he doesn't abuse it more is that he has about a half dozen other spells he abuses the fuck out of.

you know its funny, i day dream at work a lot (and i mean a lot) and have had brain stories that i've mapped out if i were to pitch it or make it a series. And even in my head if i think of something new or cool, i also think "how would that fit or work with everything else i've already put in?". In short, the framework of your main story should be able to support everything you put on it, on not the other way around.

Imagine if Sage couldn’t use portals in the cave, she tries and tries and even with inspiration from her friends she can’t, opening in ark where she’s unsure of her magical abilities and actually grows as a character leading to a triumphant moment in a later episode where she finally manages to make a portal yeah it’s probably very cliché but it’s better than what we got
