Hi Kyle and Shannon, I was raised alongside a pitbull and our dog trainer taught us along with training the dog. One of the most important commands Bruno needs to learn ( especially a pit ) is release. He's plenty old enough and it should be part of his tug play. For his and everyone's safety he needs to release, open his jaws or drop whatever on command. It'll help with the accidental finger bleeding too. Good luck. 😊
I left a reply (worded a little differently) in regard to yes, it is important to teach a dog to release, leave it, and that the owner has to be the winner in this tug of war game(s), otherwise the dog wins and that could spell trouble....I guess K&S decided they did not like hearing the truth and they removed it, sorry they feel that way, I was in no way disrespectful.
If you want to throw for Bruno, bring 2 toys. You throw one and when he doesn't let go, you throw the second one. He'll let go of the first to run after the other one.
They need good mousers. Shelter cats may not be trained as such. Such cats are often raised indoors and are not hunters. If I got a cat for a farm I would want to know it was raised by a mama cat that was an good mouser. I would also, leave the kitten with the mother until it was old enough for the mother to teach it how to hunt.
@ all true but shelters get kittens in a lot without Mom, so they do best to feed & spay, any cat can be a great mouse catcher, it’s the way they do once they get them, they really need at least 2 cats. As kittens they learn to love the other animals. Watch Morgan from Gold Shaw Farms, his were strays, Mom & baby & another male, all catch everything moving there! Plus they get along with 2 LGDs, goats, cows, etc.

My 150lb bullmastiff does the same thing. She watches every move I make and between her and my golden I am well guarded. I also never have an alone minute.
The younger the kitten's, the better they'll get along with Bruno and Hurk. Older cats will rarely become friends with a dog. The best you'll get is that they'll tolerate the dogs. Better to be friends 🧡 😊❤
@saraanderson6615 This is also true. The best case scenario is all would young, but that option is off the table. But as long as the dogs are well behaved while the kittens are learning that the dogs aren't going to eat them, eventually they'll want to play with them if the dogs don't feel too scary to them.

I'm so glad to hear that it's not just my Pittahoula that is a nightmare at night if he didn't recharge enough. Man! It's brutal trying to settle him if he gets past his bedtime. My big guy will be 2 at the end of next month and we still struggle some nights if he's over tired. I feel your pain (literally). I would definitely agree that he's American Pit Bull Terrier and Catahoula based on his body and head etc. My guy is built the same way and that's what his breed mix is. Bruno's personality and behaviors remind me so much of my guy too. I love watching him. You have definitely done a better job of training him than I have done with mine. He's still a work in progress, but he seems to really like training so that helps. - As to the cats... check in the feed store or Tractor supply near you. They usually have a community bulletin board where folks post services or stuff that they might have or are looking for. You might be able to put up an In Search Of Barn Cats post.
Some nights are rougher than others, but the cuddles at the end always make it worth it 🥰❤️ I'm thankful Kyle is able to handle him when he gets like that bc he can be a bit much for me at times 💁🏼♀️🩷 We bought a tether tug toy to try to help wear him out and let him play on his own, but we can't get it in the ground anywhere out here 🤦🏼♀️🤪 still such a good pup though 🥰❤️

My neighbor has cats he has been trying to get rid of for a while, black, black and white, grey, tabby, male and female, he would be happy for you to have them. We are just south of Muskogee, so probably about 2.5 - 3 hours, but good health cats. All ages
My puppy broke the squeakers on my 13 chickens. No idea how the chicken coop door got opened while I was at work. My puppy was raised with a toybox of chewies with little squeekers inside so I couldn’t really blame him when a whole flock of them arrived in his front yard. I came home to find him at the gate, holding a chicken limp in his mouth. His facial expression was “Mom, the squeeker broke. Can you fix it?”
I was in dog rescue/adoption for 20+ yrs, 70% pitties, I would say Bruno is APBT & lil above in weight, ive seen many sizes for ages they are, but loyalty & pleasing, protection & work, play just describes most I’ve met. I think release & recall are most important in training, once latched onto something almost impossible to get something out of their jaws! I get very upset at the dumb assumptions on pitties, they are born mean, etc. if ONLY those people could see several puppies grow up with Love & good people they would see, I’ve seen pitties rescued from fight rings that with lil love & training few months later they are WONDERFUL love bugs. We have always found the best homes for all our rescues, still get letters & emails from rescue parents 15 yrs ago! Love Herc & Bruno, they are great love bugs & great at their jobs! ❤❤🙏🤗🐾🐾

Neighbors are the best source of cats. My nephew had two pitbulls when he got a shop kitten from a neighbor. One of the pitbulls is young, poorly trained, and aggressive. Even so the dog loves the kitten. He plays a bit rough, but it is play. He just wanted another playmate. The cat is no longer afraid of him. It just doesn't like the rough play. I introduced my male Maltese dog to my nephews male pitbulls. In the end they ran as a pack with my Maltese always bringing up the rear. I discovered that pitbulls are just dogs. They have the same wants to play and get attention as my little dog. They just have huge bodies so good training is important. Their last vet weigh in was 79 pounds and 85 pounds. They were both overweight.
In my cat/dog experience, & about my big dog RuRu (shaped like Bruno, but up to 120 lbs as he aged), he started out as a 3-month old large breed pup when he came to us, and we had 5 cats. So, while he was getting to know them, it was inside the house and back porch. When we moved, and fenced the whole acre, and had a cat kennel built, he ran the acre with his high energy, but I put him in the kennel with the cats when people came over, like power, water, barn-builders, internet line, phone line, etc. He NEVER was rough or aggressive with the cats. However, if they had ever gotten out where they ran in the yard, he would've killed them. I watched my neighbor's dogs kill cats who got in their fenced yard for 16 years now. I watched Ru go after stray cats, possums, raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, anything that went over or under the fence. The Walkers that have Xena have a cat in with Xena, but if Xena saw a stray in his pen, he'd probably kill it. There's something about the bonding in the smaller spaces, and even their young ages, that helps them not kill the cats. But that doesn't go for all cats, or all spaces. My first suggestion is to bring kittens in when Bruno is crated, and often, and let them get acquainted. Let them walk in his crate when he's out of it, and watching them. Give the kittens or cats a protective crate of their own, so they know where to run to if he chases them, but try to prevent that if you can. It wouldn't be the same with Herc, but every chance you get to handle the cats right before you pet him, you get him accustomed to their scent. Him seeing you carry them around also helps the positive association. If your dogs chase your cats early on, they'll run off in fear. Put them up high on hay or straw stacks to get away from the dogs, but only after thoroughly aquainting them. I'm not telling you what to do, I'm suggesting what will help. The neighbors lost a cat to their own dogs just a few months ago. As the cat perched on the fence corner, one dog was jumping up and biting his leg. I heard the commotion and was yelling as I rushed over, and pushed until I got the cat off onto the safe side. But he was in shock and bleeding. He was at the vet in 10 minutes, but he died the next day. Other times, those dogs carried a dead cat around the yard like a trophy. They won't mess with them for a long time, then they do. Herc got used to your birds, but we see what happened when one came into his pen. He did what his nature dictated. Sometimes nature is hard and cruel, it's not always rainbows and butterflies. That being said, I know that you need "barn cats" (mousers), and that you might have a rough time about it with those 2 big dogs. Cats get overwhelmed and freeze, catatonic, like goats do, when attacked, if it's harmful enough. I hope for the best for y'all, and that your mousers can be safe.

Kyle don't ever think that a cat cant take care of themselves!! They are great hunters n can virtually take care of themselves. They dont need anyone..I have several cats that are dominant n act like a dog!!
Big dogs are my favorite. I had a 27" tall, 110 lb Rhodesian Ridgeback and she was all muscle. Best dog in the world like Herc and Bruno. She was so smart and knew how to make us laugh. I had a heeler and Australian Shepherd and she was a lot smarter than either of those dogs.
I grew up with a German Shepherd. Really grew up with her. One of my first memories was me looking at her. Thinking back on it now, she was still a puppy, I think I was about 3 years old. She lived until I was 15. I've always wanted another German Shepherd. I don't know if I would have the strength now. But my "Lady" was as gentle as a lamb with us kids. ❤
Kyle, have you considered getting two so he can chase one and when he comes back with it , you throw the 2nd and I bet he drops the first one. It might save some wear and tear on your arms🙃

Kyle you are correct Bruno's Pit side is American Pit cause I'm telling ya he is a twin to my Hano I swear. His Mom our Pit is American Pit and his Dad our mix of boxer lab mix.
I would definitely get a young kitten versus an older cat. It’s easier to acclimate a kitten to a dog and vice versa. Older cats pretty much have it in their mind that cats rule and dogs drool 😜 therefore it will be much more difficult to get them to make friends.

All 8 of mine did fine getting used to dogs. You need a lot of patience though. And a dog that that doesn't act hyper. Bruno would be a problem there.

My first suggestion is to bring kittens in when Bruno is crated, and often, and let them get acquainted. Let them walk in his crate when he's out of it, and watching them. Give the kittens or cats a protective crate of their own, so they know where to run to if he chases them, but try to prevent that if you can. It wouldn't be the same with Herc, but every chance you get to handle the cats right before you pet him, you get him accustomed to their scent. Him seeing you carry them around also helps the positive association. If your dogs chase your cats early on, they'll run off in fear. Put them up high on hay or straw stacks to get away from the dogs, but only after thoroughly aquainting them.
I'm not telling you what to do, I'm suggesting what will help. The neighbors lost a cat to their own dogs just a few months ago. As the cat perched on the fence corner, one dog was jumping up and biting his leg. I heard the commotion and was yelling as I rushed over, and pushed until I got the cat off onto the safe side. But he was in shock and bleeding. He was at the vet in 10 minutes, but he died the next day. Other times, those dogs carried a dead cat around the yard like a trophy. They won't mess with them for a long time, then they do. Herc got used to your birds, but we see what happened when one came into his pen. He did what his nature dictated. Sometimes nature is hard and cruel, it's not always rainbows and butterflies. That being said, I know that you need "barn cats" (mousers), and that you might have a rough time about it with those 2 big dogs. Cats get overwhelmed and freeze, catatonic, like goats do, when attacked, if it's harmful enough. I hope for the best for y'all, and that your mousers can be safe.

My roommate had a Catahoula Leopard Dog. Not a mix. She was fabulous. A great escape artist.

Kyle don't ever think that a cat cant take care of themselves!! They are great hunters n can virtually take care of themselves. They dont need anyone..I have several cats that are dominant n act like a dog!!

Have you tried Vic's vapor rub on a cotton ball where ever you don't want mice, the order chases them away they hate it.
Big dogs are my favorite. I had a 27" tall, 110 lb Rhodesian Ridgeback and she was all muscle. Best dog in the world like Herc and Bruno. She was so smart and knew how to make us laugh. I had a heeler and Australian Shepherd and she was a lot smarter than either of those dogs.
I grew up with a German Shepherd. Really grew up with her. One of my first memories was me looking at her. Thinking back on it now, she was still a puppy, I think I was about 3 years old. She lived until I was 15. I've always wanted another German Shepherd. I don't know if I would have the strength now. But my "Lady" was as gentle as a lamb with us kids. ❤

If you can find kittens that are familiar with dogs it might be better. If they start hissing and scratching at the dogs that might make Herc want to eat them. ❤

I would definitely get a young kitten versus an older cat. It’s easier to acclimate a kitten to a dog and vice versa. Older cats pretty much have it in their mind that cats rule and dogs drool 😜 therefore it will be much more difficult to get them to make friends.
I have a Pitsky…… he’s the best. Beautiful dog I wouldn’t trade her for anything.
