@gotham61, just for the record, Nunavut is actually one of the 3 territories, and the other 10 are provinces. Until 1999, it was combined with today's Northwest Territories, and was the largest country division in the world. Now, due to that split, it's been superseded by the Russian republic of Yakutia in Siberia.

I grew up in Mississippi where people lack adequate income and decent paying jobs, are stressed from always having to worry about how to make ends meet, the under-funding and under-investment in healthcare, lack of adequate health insurance coverage, failure to expand public healthcare programs that were designed to help low-income & individuals with chronic conditions, skepticism of healthcare (either due to historic or present perceptions of mistreatment), and the lack of access to fresh foods. Though I no longer live in Mississippi, I grew up in Jackson where there used to be places to buy fresh meat & produce within walking distance of my parents’ house. Because many grocery stores either closed or consolidated in the 90s thanks to the influence of Walmart's expansion into the grocery business at the same time, the nearest grocery store is a 15-minute drive from their home. My parents' house is within the City of Jackson (population of approximately 150,000 people). There is a Dollar General store which sells high-sodium and high-sugar processed foods and, unfortunately, that’s what many people rely on. It is easier to get McDonald’s in Jackson than it is to get fresh fruit and vegetables. Additionally, many people drink carbonated drinks (what you would call a fizzy drink in the U.K.) because the drinking water is generally not safe for consumption (search “Jackson Water Crisis”). That’s just my thoughts on why the place I grew up have the lowest life expectancy in the United States.

@neutrino78x Jackson has had water quality issues for over 4 decades and the state government has regularly turned its back on the needs of the residents of Jackson. The U.S. Congressman for Mississippi's District 2 (which covers two-thirds of the City of Jackson) regularly advocates for federal assistance to fix the city's water, sewer & road infrastructure issues. The other Congressman (who's district covers the remaining third of the city) along with the elected officials at the State level, couldn't be bothered with the issues in Jackson. The State have been exploring ways to take the State Capitol District off the City of Jackson's water system for years, in addition to the many State offices that have been relocated to the suburbs. Like with several cities in the South, the State & City have a contentious relationship where the casualties are the residents of Jackson.

Altough I'm from California and have my share of "not so great food" now and then, I had a hard time in the south finding healthy foods when eating out. I was also invited to a home cooked meal and it was good, but mostly deep fried stuff and the drink options were Sweet tea (very sugary iced tea) or Coke or beer. That was it. Here is something I found: "According to a study published in the American Heart Journal, a "Southern"-style diet is the worst diet for your heart. The study looked at dietary patterns and heart risk, and those who regularly eat Southern food -- like fried chicken, fried okra, biscuits, and gravy -- saw a 56% increased risk of cardiovascular disease, more than any other "unhealthy" diet". I do have to add, that many of these foods there are crazy delicious, it's just that the healthy options are hard to find.

Regions in the US are more cultural than geographic. I’m from New Mexico and even though it is technically in the southern half of the US, it’s not a “southern” state because in the US, the south means the southeastern portion of the country. This part of the country is the southwest. Same thing for the “Midwest”. The Midwest is not the middle-western part of the country, geographically speaking. It’s more like the north central part of the country.

With regard to people moving to Texas: if you look at that map again, you'll see a handful of blue splotches in Texas. Those are the cities. People aren't moving to rural Texas at all, but they are swarming to its cities and some suburbs, and since that map was done by county, only the urban counties turned blue. (You'll also probably notice that California is pretty solidly light blue or yellow, signifying slight population growth or neither growth nor loss. While California is growing more slowly than the nation, it's still not actually *declining* in population. There is a political agenda which leads to many claims about a population drain from that state being highly exaggerated and over-dramatized.)

Absolutely. They are also not taken as seriously and less likely to report pain or under-report pain levels. And in Tennessee the low wage worker will not qualify for state insurance even if they have no insurance available at work so we have many, many people going without health care at all. The only way you can get it is if you HAVE A BABY. That's what they told my daughter when she applied and was turned down. Everyone told her "apply for tenncare" lol yeah right. If you have a baby and stay under a certain income you will qualify until that baby is 18 years old. I had to apply when my son became ill a few years back, and they gave it to both of us because he's a minor, but the day he turned 18 we got that "recertification letter" that yanked our insurance away. My son is trying to get on disability because he's pretty much bedridden and his health care costs are in the thousands per month, but they already turned him down once. If you're on disability you get medicaid, but until then I'm working myself to death just to pay for his meds. He can't get his respiratory and physical therapy until he gets on Tenncare again. It's so messed up. We are not black but brown but it's the same for everyone poor here.

I'm going to suspect it's the food plus a high black population who have a higher proclivity for heart disease as well as being incredibly rural for miles so there's not a ton of access to healthy food there. The Eastern KY coalfields are very similar. It's a food desert plus the older folks with black lung are dying at younger ages than usual.

Health care access in those states is abysmal. The only reason why Florida isn't the same color is because retirees move there, so their elder community is higher just because old people come there already old.

Tennessee, Florida, and Texas have the most prisons that make money off keeping people in prison. We have the worst health care access next to Mississippi. We have the highest maternal mortality rate. But yeah sure we are one of the top states for businesses because they get some awesome tax breaks here as long as our governor can cash in on some of it.

Lack of affordable health care in Mississippi may be a major problem there. Health care may also soon reduce life expectancy in Texas and other states recently limiting health care for women and others in their states. People -- including doctors -- are fleeing to states with affordable and accessible health care not limited by legislation. There are also population shifts coming in sates like Florida banning books and censuring the teaching the true American history. Teachers are quitting and colleges/universities are having trouble recruiting students and retaining professors due to restrictive (and ludicrous!) state legislation. Some of the life difference in my opinion is our food. Southern food is delicious but not really healthy. I know just here in Georgia which is the largest state east of the Mississippi south Georgia has nothing. If you go below Macon there are no towns with open stores. These people may have to drive 50-100 miles to get food or see a doctor. I live in Athens Ga which is a college town. If the University of Georgia was not there we would not be as big. Years ago i had a relative in one of our two huge hospitals and a man had been flew from South Georgia to this hospital. They family was over a hundred miles from home and was sleepjng at the hospital. I knew the hospital had places that families could stay cheap. This family were farmers and they just didnt have any money. I paid for them to stay in one of the hospital duplexs. It was thirty dollars a night and they could walk to this place it was close. The woman was so worried about what the insurance would pay. She was looking at a half a million bill. The hospital was giving her a discount and the insurance would pay 80% . That left her with owing $100,000. This was only the hospital bill not the doctor or life flight bill. I told her what my family members had done. Put everything they own in her name or the kids name. Make her husband own nothing on paper. Then divorce each other, but still live together. That way the doctors and hospital cant go after their property. Pay them something every month and they cant go after you. I have a friend that has cancer and him and his wife had to do this. He owes close to two million in bills. He works at the County and they pay close to a thousand a month for Insurance, and its horribly. This Insurance wont pay for a lot of his treatments. So they charge him. Sadly they will get his retirement unless they can find a loop hole. My husband took a early retirement and we had to buy our Insurance. That was a NIGHTMARE!! We found some for him and our son got $350. a month and it pays really good. Im on disability and ive got government insurance but it not the best. People in South Georgia have nowhere to go for major health problem. They have to go to a hospital that has specialist working there. I'm so lucky that i live in the country but in 15 minutes i can be in Athens.

11:20 is a good example for Europeans to see in order to understand why we don't use HSR.
Within each of those regions is world class public transit. But we don't use trains to go from one to other because they are simply too far apart.
For example "Northern California" to "Cascadia" is 800 miles or 1287 km. Even if we built an HSR all that way, it would take, best case scenario, roughly four hours. But you can fly it in about 2 hours. Same with Chicago ("Great lakes Region") to New York, roughly the same distance.
(btw they have some of these regions extended a little two far. "Northern California" should really be labeled "San Francisco Bay Area" (I live in the SF Bay Area), and they have it extending down into the Central Valley, which is definitely not correct. The Bay Area region is just the nine counties that touch the San Francisco Bay. The Central Valley is out in the middle of nowhere and not part of that same cluster. Not only in terms of population density (the Bay Area has roughly the same amount of people, but in a much smaller area) but also culturally; the Central Valley is MAGA/Trumpers and in the Bay Area we are strongly against that. So that vertical line they have coming out of Northern California is not correct. Great Lakes region is also too large, Chicago is the only significant city in that area.)

The map about Jewish population in the states is really fascinating for Georgia. Almost the entirety of the Jewish population lives in Metro Atlanta (around 120k people). Some of it is from transplants from NYC, but the core of the community came in the 19th century, mostly from German-Jewish merchants and industrialists. The quickly took control of manufacturing and department stores in the city and became a large part of the city’s monied class at one point. Of course, because of those Jewish heritage they were relegated to somewhat of a second class status thanks to Jim Crow, but overtime they operated within the margins between the Southern Whites and Atlanta’s Black community. During the civil rights movement they worked closely with Dr King as they wished to be free of segregation for both business and personal l reasons. When segregation ended, Jewish business owners began taking on roles in government and that paved the way for the Black middle and upper class to take over just a few short years later. That partnership allowed Atlanta to come out of Jim Crow focused on getting as far away from it as possible. In fact, one of the biggest reasons why Atlanta became as big as it did as fast as it did can be attributed to its large Jewish population unlike any other city within 500 miles. The closest, Miami.

Broadly generalizing, the two demographics with the highest poverty rates in the U.S. are people in the more rural areas and people of color. Unfortunately for the state of Mississippi, they have both. This is true for other states in the southeastern U.S., as well as Native American reservations. At 4:40, you noticed the rural areas with high African-American populations, and this is after the "Great Migration" in the twentieth century to cities in the North and West. Those are the areas where the most slave plantations were located more than 160 years ago.
The map at 9:15 shows rural areas throughout the country losing population. People are moving to cities everywhere, but predominantly to those in warmer climates and to those with lower real estate prices.
Regarding Canada's low population, the country is currently offering money, like a signing bonus in sports, to people in certain professions to move to Canada. As does the U.S, Canada has immigrants from all over the world, but being a member of the British Commonwealth has resulted in significant migration from those nations. I don't know what the immigration rules are.
My home state of Rhode Island has the highest percentage of Catholics, although few that I know follow all of the Church's teachings. Most of the common ethnic ancestries here are Catholic countries: Italy, Ireland, Portugal, French-Canada, and Latin America.

To add a little bit of context. To the video. A couple of months ago ,the Hispanic population in Texas surpassed that of the caucasian population, the California stste motto us Eureka because according to legend, John Sutter supposedly said Eureka I found it in relation to finding the initial gold nugget that kicked off rhe the gold rush in 1848. San Jose is in the heart of Silicon Valley which explains the high population of Asians , likewise , the tech and aerospace industries in Seattle ( Boeing and Microsoft are based in the Seattle Metro area.) Historically speaking the Area areaIn has always had a higher pop of Asians given many came over in the 19th century ( mostly men to help build the rest of Western Pacific railroad and to work as fisherman and farmers in the Central Valley/ San Joaquin Valley along the Sacramento river delta. A lot of Chinese American farmers took over farms that were owned by Japanese families after the government "relocated families " in Concentration camps after the bombing of Pearl Harbor .
Of course the reasons there's a higher population of blacks in the South is due to slavery
Montana and Wyoming which are two of least populated states in the country, cattle outnumber people. It's not unusual to be driving diown interstate 35 in Dallas, Tx and see cows grazing and looking at he cars whizzing by. I've seen this on my trips to visit family friends in Dallas over the years.
Within the last couple of weeks, it was reported that the political leaders in Phoenix, Arizona put a permanent halt in the building of new homes due to the region's quickly running out of water.

Because good health is not easy to get. And a lot of people that are low income. I also saw a show on P.B.S pubic TV. That said they can tell if there are a lot of people with asthma,by there zip code. What they did is,to look for property that was cheap. They were usely near companies that had smoke stacks. Since the air quality was not very good,a lot of people got sick.

You find large African American populations mainly still in the South and in some of the northern cities where many moved for industrial job opportunities in the late 1800s to mid 1900s.
