It isn't my favourite by all means but I still enjoyed it because its part of The Walking Dead universe and it does still tie in, you don't have many episodes left and the later parts of this series is the best part!
One major character that you are familiar with, returns in the final episodes, but don't expect a big payoff to the series. Even the spinoffs do not show this cast again and the little this show teaches about the CRM is never really more than what we got from FTWD. "The Ones Who Live" has more CRM storyline, but it is unknown, whether or not there is a second season coming at this time.

You don't 'have' to watch this series.... the spin offs explain what you need to know... sure this gives you a bit a background but it isn't 'necessary' to watch it.
While the 2nd season is better than the 1st, it really wasn't worth the time investing thought into the characters. Since you've gotten this far you should finish it since the last episodes were the better ones. I felt the same as you about this show basically TWD for teens.
Admire your fortitude! Hang in there! You will be rewarded with some interesting tid bits! After you watch all three of the WD spinoffs, you will probably ask, what was the point of World Beyond? Was this series necessary?
At the time it looked like there is a need to watch this crap-show, but after three spinn offs (also not very good and borderline crap-shows) aired of which one fully wrapped up as limited series, there is no need to watch this, cause spinn offs didn't expand on it, we even may say, spinn offs ignored it.
