The history of women saints and mystics has remained obscure and unrecorded. Still millions of lives have been transformed by their inspirational lives. The Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, Mother Ananadamayi, Lal Ded( the great proponent of Advaitic Savisim philosophy in Kashmir) and host of others were masters in all forms of Yoga. It is just that they did not put on ochre robes and did not write books! They just led the lives -in midst of us - that ordinary people can understand and identify with. No great Rishi was ever born without being raised by a great mother. Story of queen Madalsa is well known. Over the centuries, women were not expected to give up their homes and hearths in search of the Truth but this might change as the civilization matures.

What a beautiful discourse on the sacredness of WOMEN in the pursuit of spirituality.. Especially for us HINDUS whose culture worships the DIVINE FEMININE, but most of us don't translate it to our personal lives and our society.. When the greatest intellectual debate on "Advaita" was enacted between two great intellectual GIANTS - Shankaracharya and Mandana Misra, the arbitrator (Judge) chosen was Smt. Ubhaya Bharati (Mandana Misra's own wife).. What a towering intellectual personality she must have been to arbitrate this debate..

I request you to read about the culture of Amman temples in South India. Women have been the center of Dravidian Vedic culture. They were worshiped as protecting god's instead of rishis . This may be because they were a part of their day to day living than taking sanyasi

  • @suram3666
    @suram3666 4 года назад +26

We worship several Rishikas mentioned throughout Vedas.
Aditi, Arundhati, Lopamudra, Mytreyi, Gowtami, Savita, Gargi, Romasha, Saraswati, Ahalya, Vishavara, and many many more. They were standalone Rishikas and have made significant contributions.
Sanatana Dharma tells us to worship Devis: Starting from the Supreme Goddess Gayatri Maa, we worship Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati maa.
Great sages like Adi Shankaracharya have written several Stotras in praise of the supreme goddesses. He said that Bharma, Vishnu, Maheswara are nothing without Maa Saraswati , Maa Lakshmi, and Maa Parvati.
Power of women has been demonstrated at several places in Vedic hymns:
Lord shiva’s half portion is Shakti: That is how he is called Ardha Nari Eswara.
Prarkiti and Purusha are equal as per our belief.
Supreme Lord Sri Krishna’s consort Satya Bhama has killed the demon when Sri Krishna faints. That is how we celebrate Deepavali.
Goddess Durga taught us how to fight eve-teasing. That is how we celebrate Navarati.
All our sacred rivers are named after great women, and we continuously worship them.
This list goes on and on.
We believe that wherever a woman is subjected to pain, the devastation follows.
We are born and brought up in the culture of respecting women.
My humble submission is not to attribute gender issues to ancient scriptures. Every Sanatana Dharma Practitioner worships Goddesses, respects women, and never differentiates merit based on body parts.
Please do not generalize or typecast. There is nothing called as Androcentric in Sanatana Dharma.
Mother is at the center of the universe. Kindly Understand. 🙏🙏🙏

At last Swami-ji, it's about time this subject was addressed; as you touched upon, it's not your fault in the least, the earlier scriptures were all written by males, who viewed females as second-class citizens, that has always been the case in India and unfortunately, continues to be the case today, although Modi is trying his best to make changes and promote gender equality. What never ceases to amaze me, is that all the main Gods within the Hindu Vedic scriptures/texts, are always shown with their Divine consorts; Lord Vishnu & Matha Laxshmi, Lord Shiva (the Adi-Yogi) & Matha Parvatri, Lord Krishna & Sri Radha-Rani, Lord Brahma & Matha Saraswati, Lord Rama & Matha Sita and so on and so forth. All these male 'Gods' treated their wives as their duality yin & yang, polar opposites, their equals, Lord Shiva in the Skanda purana, even teaches Matha Pavatri, about the chakra system within meditation. However, due to male priests and brahmins, not being able to control their sexual appetites, desires and lustful urges, it resulted in the woman suffering suppression, repression and labelling, of 'distractors', 'evil doer's', 'sinners' for absolutely years, simply due to the fact, that these men, could not control their sexual thoughts and urges. Hence, the selfishness of Sanyasi when the males get to a certain age, hopefully, in today's age, this includes woman also. I do not mean to attack you Swami-ji, but, this is the reason, why I stopped reading our religious texts from a young age, it was far too sexist for me to partake in and today, I only take from the parts of text, which agree with my atma. Thank you and namaste.

I don't like how amazing, gifted women are usually given labels somehow related to something that only looks visually appealing or appealing to taste like fruits and flowers. it's always noticeable, the most "divine flower" or the most "ripest" or something like that.
it will take time for us to undo the view of women under the lustful view of the male gaze. that's what makes us associate women in such ways, not as a whole human being that has honor and respect.

Our ancient rishis were never sexiest and trained seekers of both genders for the brahm Vidya. But I think hindu culture became more androcentric after the famous debate between Adi Shankaracharya and Madana Mishra where in when Madana Mishra was on verge of loosing the debate his wife Bharathi intervened and told that Shankaracharya will have to defeat her also as she is ardhangini. Rest is history. Although, Shankaracharya won the debate but he started discouraging female seekers of Hindu religion to learn brahm vidhya. Thereafter this kept on deteriorating for female seekers

    • @atanunath
      @atanunath 4 года назад

"but he started discouraging female seekers of Hindu religion to learn brahm vidhya", can you please cite any reference? I am asking this because if true, this goes against Sankara's "Upadeshasahasri", where he argues that knowing that Brahman (=Atman) is the only reality and is one with every being, any kind of discrimination goes against Advaita Vedanta and hence wrong. This will be hypocritical of him if he really discriminated based on gender.

Maybe you need to study Aadhi Shankara properly. Were women dissuaded from seeking Brahma Vidhya, or were they requested to not abandon their familial and social responsibilities to be free to go in search of Brahma Vidhya? Individual progress is most important, but society’s well-being is vital. Will children without a caring mother grow to be good adult individuals of a society?

That is because Woman is the dynamic Spirit which activates the Rishi. The man is the container (Jadam) of that spirit. Shakti is the energy which energises the body, which cannot be seen. So each Rishi, for example, Veda Vyasa is actually not a 'Man' but a Female spirit inside a 'Male' container.
When female spirit activates a female container, she will directly become a Goddess because of the dynamism, and not a Rishi.

Elijah has returned, as prophesied, and testifies: My mother is a saint; a soul that has evolved beyond selfishness, a living example for all. She is more advanced than I. And yet, it is I who have been given the role of evangelist to the world in the coming Tribulation. During Kali Yuga - the darkest age - women are oppressed by male ignorance. For example, the most ignorant half of the United States currently wants an anti-Christ misogynist to be their president. But all is part of the Perfect Design. The half of the souls known collectively as "Eve" not only led the fall, but also lead The Return. I could never have been the person I am in this incarnation if not for my blessed mother. And in more enlightened ages it is the women who hold the places of acknowledged authority. The cycles of samsara will end where they began: LOVE, which flows from GOD to the mother to the son. And the talking serpent-head of the male ego will be crushed forever, because the woman crushed her ego first.

You are in delusion if you think it was Mughals who changed India. Darius the II and Mahmud of Ghazi and their descendants ruled and impacted many part of India. The south was only ruled by Vijayanagara Empire who drove off the pre existing Muslim of Delhi Sultanate. Some parts of South India was ruled by other Muslims rather than Mughals. Though Mughals captured entirety of India by 1704 (for 200 yrs South wasn’t touched until Aurangzeb) until Maratha, Durrani and British Empire took over.
Portuguese were first to come in India, they have written what they saw in South India which was during the reign of Akbar but he didn’t control the South.
Persians and Arabs had big influence in the Indian subcontinent, the real Hindu culture probably vanished before before Christ.
I m not disregarding the book.

It is easy to know the true reason if you just look at history. This isn't meant to be rude or cruel towards men, just read without judgement and think about how men and women act in your own life. Being enlightened is even harder for men than women because they don't birth children and cannot naturally experience pure selfless love. At some point in history a few men turned away from working on their ego and started waging war against children women and nature, and the rest of men just stood by and watched. Truly there are no men, we all start as female in the womb, man is just a mutation/different expression of woman. Looking at the chromosomes one can clearly see the y chromosome is very small and cannot recombine or heal, it is isolated and crippled. Not to say women are imperfect, but just looking at dna we can see man is a lower expression of humanity. Men should stop working against themselves and nature by trying to act like men and women are equal, or that men are higher than women in spirituality. It was women who were the first sages and seers, who wrote the holy texts that were later corrupted by prideful and controlling men. We could build a heaven on earth if men simply stopped waging war against women children and nature, and stepped down from the role they were not meant for.

A woman’s mind and body are more fine and subtle too, which is closer to spirit. Men’s bodies and minds are denser, more physical. I have heard this from many wise individuals, women are man 2.0, the more evolved version. More agreeable, more selfless, more naturally loving, more humble, more merciful. I am shocked at this as I have suffered the idea that “women are inferior to men” for over 2 decades of my life. I cannot believe this has been hidden from us but it feels right. Women have the power and the strength to humble themselves and love those that are weaker. Men rather tend to take it as a dominance opportunity due to their deep ingrained insecurity. This makes so much sense 🥹

This reflects upon ancient expressions such as ParaBrahmajaya Prajitamam which often appear to show the male aspect dominating that of the female. I've had to do a little bit of mental gymnastics in order to reduce it into a non-gender form because I really like how it demonstrates a relationship between vyavaharika and paramarthika. The latter obviously being the superior point of view. If I think of Prajitamam as being the equivalent of Ishvara Pranadhana it takes the gender aspect completely out of the picture for me now. The submissiveness of the term is still there, but without the inference of a so called "weaker sex" obfuscating its real import. I appreciate the effort at trying to smooth out some of the rough edges Swamiji.

Since Manusmruti started dictating the life of Hindus in India, maintenance of the caste system became more important than spiritual accomplishment. Women are gatekeepers of the caste system. Women were denied of a natural right to seek spiritual path. The caste system limited the spiritual lives of women and non-brahmin. This is my opinion, not a claim. Nobody knows accurate history.

manusmriti was hardly of any influence in indian society, people are racist and casteist by nature of their creation, they don't need a book to tell them that, manusmriti is just the documentation of those practices not the cause of them, its ridiculous that people think manusmirti which is not even a shruti is so influential that it surpasses even geeta and vedas, most of hinduism is community based not book based, people followed traditions of their fathers and ancestors not something written in some book, some of those ancestors were racist and casteist hence those traditions got corrupted to this point. Women were not denied the natural right to seek spiritual path directly, you can at any time become like shabri who was a renunciate, the problem is becoming a renunciate is not easy, not for people who are born in poverty, believe it or not but most renunciates were from wealthy background or sons and daughters of rishi themselves, women were busy in worldly affairs since their marriage, there was no scope for them to crave detachment, women didn't hold jobs and wealth in the past so they were always busy making a living by helping their husbands, in such conditions you cannot become a renunciate.

Without knowing the greatness and glory of women , Indian women, and Tamil women, it is absurd to say there were no women rishis. I can name hundreds because women were taught spiritual matters before men. There is no androcentric word in Indian culture. It came because of the western influence. - Dr.Anand

Don't blame the West. Indian culture, like EVERY other culture on Earth, was and is Androcentric.....it wasn't misogyny coz there was NO CHOICE those days as there was no safety for women to leave the house and travel outside, just not safe enough!! Remember, no cars, no phones, no lights at night, it would take ages to walk to the next village.
Also, the idea of women working outside the home was unheard of, in the ENTIRE world till recently. Good thing we are living in this current age.

The concept of multiverses is mentioned many times in Hindu Puranic literature, such as in the Bhagavata Purana:
Every universe is covered by seven layers - earth, water, fire, air, sky, the total energy and false ego - each ten times greater than the previous one. There are innumerable universes besides this one, and although they are unlimitedly large, they move about like atoms in You. Therefore You are called limitless (Bhagavata Purana 6.16.37)
Analogies to describe multiple universes also exist in the Puranic literature:
Because You are limitless, neither the lords of heaven nor even You Yourself can ever reach the end of Your glories. The countless universes, each enveloped in its shell, are compelled by the wheel of time to wander within You, like particles of dust blowing about in the sky. The śrutis, following their method of eliminating everything separate from the Supreme, become successful by revealing You as their final conclusion (Bhagavata Purana 10.87.41)
The layers or elements covering the universes are each ten times thicker than the one before, and all the universes clustered together appear like atoms in a huge combination (Bhagavata Purana 3.11.41)

According to Puranas, each kalpa consists of fourteen Manvantaras, and each Manvantara is headed by a different *Manu* (the first Man of every cycle). The current universe, is asserted to be ruled by the 7th Manu named Vaivasvata.
In Vishnu Purana, Vaivasvata, also known as Sraddhadeva or Satyavrata, was the king of Dravida before the great flood. He was warned of the flood by the Matsya (fish) avatar of Vishnu, and built a boat that carried the Vedas, Manu's family and the seven sages to safety, helped by Matsya.
Total age of universe is 311.04 trillion years (human years).
Current age is around 155.521972944 trillion years.
      How it is calculated:
-> There are 4 ages on earth which keeps circulating:
Satya Yuga - 1.728 million years
Treta Yuga - 1.296 million years
Dwapara Yuga - 0.864 million years
Kali Yuga - 0.432 million years
      Total: 4.32 million human years.
-> This yuga cycle is called maha (in english, it means great/big) or divya (divine) yuga. One thousand such cycles forms one day of Brahma. So one day of Brahma is 4.32 million * 1000 = 4.32 billion human years. Each such day of Brahma is called a "kalpa". His night also constitutes 4.32 billion human years. During his day, life exists in universe. In nighttime, no form of life exists. So one complete day and night has 8.64 billion human years.
-> Age of Brahma is 100 years. Each year of Brahma has 360 days and same number of nights. Thus, total age of Brahma is 360 * 100 * 8.64 billion = 311,040 billion human years. i.e. 311.04 trillion years. This period is called "maha kalpa".
-> The life span of the universe is one "maha kalpa". i.e. 311.04 trillion human years. This time span is also the duration of one breath of "Vishnu". When he exhales, thousands of universes emerges and one "Brahma" is born in each universe. When "Vishnu" inhales, all universes get sucked and Brahma dies.
-> This cycle is non-ending and eternal. Thats why "Vishnu" is considered eternal in Vedic Science (or religion).
How much old is our universe:
-> Note that the period of Satya Yuga is 0.4x, Treta Yuga is 0.3x, Dwapara Yuga is 0.2x and Kali Yuga is 0.1x where x is the time-span of one maha-yuga cycle. I will use 'x' as 1 maha-yuga cycle subsequently.
-> In 1 day of Brahma, there are 14 "manvantara" (Manu Avatar). Each "manvantara" is divided into 71 "maha-yuga" cycles. So total make 14*71 = 994x (mahayuga cycles).
-> Remaining cycles (1 day of Brahma contains 1000 maha-yuga cycles) are used to fill gaps between manvantara. Before and after each manvantara (called as "sandhya" and "sandhyamsa" respectively), there is a junction of 1.728 million (age of Satya Yuga, or 0.4x) human years. Total number of junctions are 15 (since there are 14 manvantaras). So total gap period is = 0.4 * 15 = 6x. Hence total makes 1000 maha-yuga cycles or 1 brahma day.
-> According to the Vedic texts, current age of Brahma is 50 Brahma years and 1 brahma day (we are in the 1st day of 2nd half of brahma)and we are in the seventh "manvantara", in the 28th turnover of its 71 yuga cycles. In this cycle, we are in the start Kali Yuga. Age of kali yuga is not known perfectly but it is around 5000-10000 years. For calculation, lets assume 5000 human years.
-> So current age of our universe (in terms of maha-yuga cycles) =
      (50 * 720 * 1000) -- 50 years * (360 days + 360 nights) * total no. of cycles in one day/night
      + (6 * 71) -- 6 manvantara each of 71 maha-yuga cycle
      + (7 * 0.4) -- 7 junctions or gaps for 6 manvantara
      + (27 * 1) -- we are in 28th cycle of 71
+ (0.4+0.3+0.2) -- In this cycle, we are in Kali Yuga. Satya Yuga, Treat Yuga and Dwapara yuga are 0.4x, 0.3x and 0.2x respectively.
+ around 5000 human years -- very small, so ignoring it.
Thus total age = (36,000,000 + 456.7)x = 36,000,456.7 * 4.32 million = 155,521,972.944 million years = 155.521972944 trillion human years. Now add the age of kaliyuga. i.e. around 5000 human years. One we calculate the exact age of kaliyuga, we can know the exact age of universe.

      From wiki:
Mahavishnu (Devanāgarī : महाविष्णु) [Hari, Narayana] is a principal deity in Hinduism, known as the Absolute protector of the universe beyond human comprehension and all attributes. In Gauḍīya Vaishnavism, a school of Vaiṣṇavism, the Sātvata-tantra describes three different forms, or aspects, of Mahavishnu:
      Kāraṇārṇavaśāyī Viṣṇu,
      Garbhodakaśāyī Viṣṇu and
      Kṣīrodakaśāyī Vishnu.
The term Mahavishnu refers to that Absolute truth Brahm(a) or Brahman (impersonal invisible aspect) then as Paramatma (Aspect beyond the understanding of human soul) and finally as Sarvatma(incarnating for bringing perfection). So bhakti (loving devotion) goes to Sarvatman(Krishna or Rama avatars or incarnations of Vishnu, Narayana bringing both peace and perfection of the living beings). In this way, bhakti surpasses even yoga, which is aimed at the Supersoul, Paramatman.
Mahavishnu is the Supersoul of all living beings (jivaatmas) in all material universes. Kāraņodaksayi Vishnu is understood to be Sankarsana(form) of the Catur-vyuha of Nārāyaņa. It is also often used interchangeably with Vishnu to indicate reverence, as the prefix "Mahā" in vishnu indicates the greatness and the vastness of Narayan. So all the Gods including Purusha form like Shiva, Brahma are considered as the Part of Maha Vishnu Expansion.[Vishwaswaroop]
Mahavishnu is said to lie in the Causal Ocean or the Karanodak. He puts the seed of this material universe in Mahāmāyā by glancing at her. Mahāmāyā remains the ever obedient material energy of the Supreme Lord. All the natural elements including sky, fire, water, air and land are created along with mind, intelligence and false ego.
After this, Mahavishnu enters each of the many universes so created (seeds emerging from the pores of His skin) as Garbhodaksayi Vishnu, who lays down in each and every of these individual material universes (Brahmandas). It can be interpreted that Garbodakshayi Vishnu is the collective soul of all souls in a particular material universe and that Mahavishnu is the collective soul of all souls in all of the material universes.
From Garbhodaksayi Vishnu then emerges Brahmā who is the secondary creator (due to his need to meditate to create planets in the material universe) of the planetary systems within particularly this material universe (Brahmanda).

There are many female rishis called as rishika(singular) in Vedic tradition. Even in modern day Vedic traditions we can find many female gurus sanyasini. As per me a male is less capable in controlling his sexual desires and therefore unless a male guru has transcended all the desires or vices he may not be willing to have a female disciple. However, Vedic tradition is in no way discriminating towards female taking spiritual path.

In the history of the spiritual life of mankind, indeed, many examples of genuine spiritual deeds have been shown by women.
I give as an example a sketch about the saint, a woman-Sufi Rabbi’a al-Adawiya, who lived in the 8th century.
Rabbi’a al-Adawiya the first of the ascetics put forward the idea of an all-consuming and selfless love of God
as the basis of a person’s spiritual life. Careful fulfillment of religious precepts and austerities,
according to Rabi’e al-Adawiye, must purify the soul of all extraneous worries and passions,
prepare it for the perception of Divine love, for the contemplation of the “Beloved” and communication with Him.
    She said these words:
"Oh, children of Adam, there are no transitional stages between the eye and God
and there is no access to Him through the tongue; the listener ear bothers in vain,
and the arms and legs are the helmsman, leading to confusion.
This work is for the heart alone. Strive to find a heart that awakened,
    for when the heart is awakened, it is not necessary for the beloved;
for the awakened heart is lost in God, and the one who is lost does not need the beloved.
This is disappearance in God. "
"Oh, if only my delight mixed with human blood
Hearts all over the earth would breathe love! "
