I recently severed my left index finger .Surgeons were able to save it .Needless to say I find playing match grip a struggle, after a lifetime of playing that way I was despondent about the future but sites like yours are giving me hope and encouragement .I'll keep on practicing my trad. Grip.BTW I'm glad I know what a fulcrum is
I had the EXACT same problem. Then i bought the Tommy Igoe Great Hands For A Lifetime dvd and it totally transformed my chops. I highly recommend you buy this dvd, it WILL improve your hands!
I've been struggling a little with the traditional grip.....frustrating. But, just practicing the exercise you show on this video has me on track again! You are very good at explaining while showing the technique. I like the close-up. Thank you much Jason.
Thank you for pointing out where the correct fulcrum point is on traditional. I've never understood why I hear so many people claim the fulcrum is at the point where the index finger meets the thumb.
Its good to learn for many reasons: Tradition, looks, playing more efficiently in certain styles, and exploring the feel and the ideas it brings out of you. Will you need it, no. Is it good to know for the sake of knowing? YES, everything is :)
That's the easiest explanation I seen on the net so far. You're a good instructor. I'd like to add that if you lift your arm level and bring it back down level, (I call it the drop) wait for the bounces to almost stop then take over with this thumb style, you get an added speed at the start and if you continue doing the drop, You'll get that Jones, Morello, Rich continuation speed. Takes time but will impress anyone when mastered.
Thanks deedub87. Glad you noticed that. I do it for two reasons. The first is it allows for less slippage of the stick while isolating. The other is I am trying to simulate the position of the thumb as close as possible to the natural position it would be in while all the fingers are there. However I may be over compensating the slippage position since i don' t really play traditional grip as much any more. I may be losing my touch. :-) Thanks again.
Hey, when you're drumming with a fulcrum the rotation comes from the wrist. 80% of the pressure should be found at the fulcrum, the other 10% at the middle and index fingers. the Ring finger is used more than one might think, at stabilizing the stick; think of them as mechanisms that are used to keep the stick in place and make small corrections as one plays.
I have tried the traditional left thumb two-finger method for many years now . My problem is holding the stick between the thumb but , it has gotten so sore that I had to go back 2 using the stick as my right hand method .So what's my solution 🤔 ??
Looks and sounds good man...one thing I noticed is when you move the stick with only the fulcrum (thumb) you curve or bend your thumb. It seems the only time you position the thumb like that is when you are only playing fulcrum. Maybe try keeping the thumb straight when only using the fulcrum and when the other fingers come in to play the thumb will be more used to that position. Either way it sounds good when you play so maybe it doesn't matter, just an observation. Take care.
so you are able to play traditional AND matched grip, i only use matched grip. can you say me, what's the real difference between these two techniques and would you recommend me to learn the traditional grip? thanks!
Hello Jason ! First of all, thanks for your excellent video. Your technique of use of fingers, (Index and major) reminds me that shown by Dave Weckl in his first VHS. I'm an amateur-drummer for 40 years and I always adored working my snare-drum for hours, especially in trad.grip. (I find that visually much more beautiful !) But there is a question which I wished to ask you : why don't you never use your ring finger, while MetroDrums in his " Buddy Rich Left Hand Technique-The Thuth !" video uses it permanently by making it slide under his stick, as I always did it myself ?
Hey, I'm trying to build up my single stroke roll and lately ive been looking at alot of technique related videos. I just want to know what to focus on with the roll. Is it mostly wrist or mostly fingers? Or is it an equal amount of both?
Nice vid! Are those 1974-75 Sonar. If so, If so, have the same kit. They stopped making that color though. I bought them when they came out. I tried to order an 18 BD in that color, but wasn't able to. Take care!
There are already plenty of vids which show correct technique, and I'm damn sure I couldn't do better than them, so why waste time? This might be a good technique if you play in a marching band, but getting around a kit is going to be quite a challenge with that grip, hence my comment that I think Marcin Nowakowski is right about the grip, and how it needs to relax more and open out. This section is for comments. That's mine. This may help ruclips.net/video/rJD-L-tyvyE/видео.html
Grant Perkins this technique has nothing to do with getting around the kit. It’s purely to build strength and dexterity in your fingers for control. Has no relevance of style. The “stiffness” he’s talking about is trying to make sure you keep the wrist isolated as to focus primarily on the fingers. He has a lot to say like a troll and nothing of him playing. I play and teach drums for a living. Flying home as I write this from a gig in Chicago. Only basement amateurs write and spew like he does. Thanks for your opinion and best of luck in your endeavors.
Hey dude great video! I have a question: when I play traditional my ring finger seems to 'get in the way' of the rebound. Is this just practise or should I hold it back? It feels natural to have it under the stick as a guidance...
@jasonfurmandrummer how will i response a video here ?? i hav a video of mine practicing this technique, i want so show u that video, so that u can tell me whether i'm doing it correctly or not. please help me out.
That thing where you only play with your fulcrum is very confusing...and hurts Lol (is that normal o-o) bc my teacher does that a lot especially if we start playing wrong on our left
No estas enseñando bien la tecnica ya que el palo nunca debe estar a 90 grados tiene que formar un triangulo con la otra mano., ademas el golpe no está firme ya que bambolea el palo y eso no debe ser asi. Gracias
This is some joke? You hold this stick so bad. At the moment 1:55 when you start play with fingers you should hold stick more straight, you hold it with 90 degrees with your hand when you should about135, this look awfull and this is not proffesional. Bad Movie, Bad player, Bad grip
So I see you say you are a drummer and you go around and make comments on other peoples vids yet you got NON!! Ha!! Me....I am a professional drummer....you are a wanna be. Post a video of YOU playing drums or just keep your amateur non playing ass quiet!! Ha!!! Man you are a JOKE!! Thank you for making me laugh today!!
This guy is so mean. I like this video, but obviously we can´t compare with Jojo Mayer. Always is great when somebody wants share his techniques or wherever. Thanks Jason, Great Movie, Great Player, Great grip. I´m a professional drummer, too. I know that you´re are a professional drummer, too. (sorry for my bad English, y speak spanish)

Great to hear it helped. Happy drumming!!
Thankyou for left hand practice for technical development
Brilliant, exactly what i needed

Are those tempus drums in the background?
