'Friend's phone' is the story of someone's inability to make a move, romantically, at a pub or bar. It is a youthful, sweet and jazzy tune with a cute coolness, walking the line between shyness and swagger. Tommy is expressing through music what he sometimes finds difficult to express in day to day life.
