My kind of radio even with the CONELRAD (Civil Defense/CD) markings. This was most likely made in 1960-1961. And on the top of the "100" station is the dot. That dot indicated the call letters for the Chicago radio station WEFM, which stood for Eugene F. McDonald Jr. Very nice one you did, Seth!
I love that big round dial, and it sounds good, too! I own an old Zenith tabletop from 1963, the last year they were made before they were downsized to a shoebox style.
Those tweeters have B+ on them, they are electrostatic, not piezoelectric. The hot side comes off the audio output plate resistor, and the ground side goes to a high value resistor to ground.
Zenith radio model B835 with chassis 8A02 ( like the chassis 8T01, were used with their wood box AM/FM radios in the 1950's). Don't ever trust the old Selenium rectifier to still work correctly after 60 years plus. Replace it with a silicon diode ( like a 1N4007) and in series with a 68 Ohm or 82 Ohm 3 Watt+ resistor. Check the B+ for correct voltage. WD-40 makes a contact cleaner now and can be found almost everywhere regular old WD-40 is sold! Nice job once again Seth.
I've used WD-40 to clean contacts for decades. The active ingredient is the same in both their contract cleaner and the regular WD-40. You have to keep both away from nylon if you're going to be using them frequently on the same product. Otherwise, the only difference is in cost. Zero difference in effectiveness. This is, I think, one of those things which separates professionals (master electrician, here) and restorers (Seth is a professional, he does more for sale in a year than most hobbyists in their lifetimes) from aficionados who can afford 'special' compounds. Your depth of knowledge always impresses me. I learned a lot from my grandfather who restored these in his shop when they were not 'antiques'. I got to do the dial-strings because "girls are better at that fiddly stuff." Even back then, he insisted on yanking the selenium rectifiers. Some units, he'd kick one or two of the tubes up to a higher voltage version, others, he'd bang in a 5 Watt resistor, well away from the capacitors. His radios are still running in some homes over 45 years later!
I’ve had some difficulty with replacing the selenium rectifier on my old radios. What diode do you use, and what resistance/wattage resistor? I always seem to have a very hot resistor and that’s using a 10 or 20 watt resistor! I’m really enjoying your videos!

Seth, it sounded good to me when you had it on bluetooth, but in my hearing the radio had a background distortion / buzz. Overall sound was ok, but why the distortion? (it even seemed present on a "strong" station). I have an old Sansui receiver that is doing the same thing. Annoys the heck out of me. What would be the cause? Antenna? or something in the tuner?
I'm an East Coast Canuck lad (old lad now), and the tapestry of obscenities I've derived my own "language" from came courtesy of my East Coast Canuck elders (both male and female). This is YOUR channel, Seth. If people do not appreciate the colour of your commentary, they can certainly go and listen elsewhere, no? I've heard a whole lot worse cussing on other channels, and if I ever got off my fool lazy arse, my own channel would be peppered with the odd "shit" and "damn" too. What's that expression my Ma used to utter....it went something like..."don't let the door whack your arse crack too hard on the way out (boyo or lass; depending on the sex of the person addressed)". I'm purty sure there is a simpler version of this expression bandied around your part of Tennessee, and would encourage you to apply it to anyone feeling the need to tell you how to run your show.
