Editor of 33 years here. We LOVE cam ops who bother to get the beautiful shots that aren’t on the day’s shotlist. Those cam ops praises are sung back in the office. When you’re editing, having extra shots goes to the notion of ‘show them, don’t tell them’ in building a narrative. There you go. Also, cool episode Luc! ❄️
I have to say Luc, you are so at ease talking in your natural environment and working away in normal life! It's really awesome to share in it. Thank you for doing this!
I have been watching a lot of Alone lately, and I've also been watching this channel pretty frequently too. I'm just now putting it together that this man was probably filming Alone. Really cool insight into this stuff!
Thanks for putting this together, guys! I love seeing behind the curtain like this - it really helps me visualize what direction I'd like to take my career in!
Nice one! For jobs like this your ability to handle the outdoors and long periods away are almost as important as your technical knowledge..but it's entirely doable!
I started out shooting news in Wisconsin 35 years ago... lots of below zero shoot days. Lot of time working to keep the AB batteries warm. Brings back a ton of memories. Never put the tripod in the Mississippi... but I did lose a camera in the river... It's probably somewhere near New Orleans now.
Great video Luc! Enjoying the longer stuff from you - it's cool to go more in depth like you did in this video. I also laughed when I saw the classic stool surviving out there in the arctic - a gaffer I work with actually got a bar stool topper for his to add some low-profile cushion! Thanks for taking the time to make these!
Been a fan of the channel for a while but somewhere around 6-min in I think we start to see your off-camera personality, and I for one would like to see more of him. I watch this channel more for educational purposes and this episode felt almost edu-tainmenty (not a word but you get it ). And get some damn trekking poles! Amongst a lot of things, it'll make crossing ice a good deal easier and can be a great monopod in a pinch. I'd reco carbon poles as the aluminum tend to stick to skin in cold weather (ask me how I know). Most Costco's carry cheap yet durable carbon poles during the winter.
@@LucForsyth It's great. Most of my productions are in the branded content and corporate space, and we always strive to make anything educational/training as edutainmenty as possible, which is largely made or broken by a charismatic host/talent. And when I'm working with someone from the client side that's going to be on camera, ie: company owner, engineer, etc., my goal is always to get their on-camera personality be as close to their off-camera personality as possible.
Awesome man! Another thing I love about your channel is that we ask and you immediately make a plan to show us! For some reason, I completely disregarded the idea of a base camp and was under the impression you were straight up just hiking for 3 months 😅 Glad to know you at least have a space to live!
Very helpful and informative, yes it takes hard work, dedication and passion to capture stunning visuals. Can you also teach us about the footage recording, saving, back up for editing?.A key elements in documentary completion. Thanks and all the best.
I was informed this past Spring that I would be along for a trip to the Arctic (Nunavut and the coast) this coming June 2024 so I was taking better care of my aging carcass and thinking through the gear I could get by with. Unfortunately last week I heard that priorities took a turn so it's a no-go for everybody that would have been going. I'll live vicariously through . . . etcetera etcetera.
Thanks this was great. It reminds me of someone I heard years ago saying that the best filmmaking gear investment they ever made was a really good jacket!
Great stuff man. I was just working on a similar project and the self-starting to hopefully get a usable shot is a real deal. You know you love your job if you can keep doing it day after day!
I'd be really curious to know how you quote a job like this that's a long-term shoot. Is this project at the scale where you get your full day rate? Or is there sort of a "bulk discount" since you're out there for so many days?
Not to toot my own horn. But I have the same light at 12:45. Yah so Luc and I have atleast something in common. Well I guess the production and I. But hey I’m chalking it up as a win.
Escape to a winter wonderland with our mesmerizing snowy video! Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of snow-covered landscapes and let the peaceful scenes transport you to a world of tranquility. Perfect for a cozy day indoors or to unwind after a busy day.
My one guilty pleasure in life is the show "Alone". I watch 0 reality TV - and pretty much no TV in general - otherwise. Hoping you are shooting next season of Alone! 😆
I've heard that we are only as good as the camera we can afford to lose... considering it took me around a 1 year to be able to replace my Go Pro 9,(never did find out why it flew the coop) taking out my fx3 in public now scares the bajeesus out of me.... now I'm visualizing myself in waders on /in the ice! This might be why I love my studio work so much! ;-)
get some little Sanken CS M1,s for onboard , that one looks way too long and ungainly .. interesting video , I thought you might mention battery management , thats was one of pain in the Arse things I remember from shooting in really cold weather
@@LucForsyth thanks for the response. I guess in this case it's the perfect tripod. I'd love to own one and one day I will. For now I have the Sirui Rapid Quick Release SVT75. It's really quick, but rather heavy.
@@LucForsyth Since I make videos about living full-time in my van on Public Land, I feel like I could manage. The more remote a location is, the happier I am. Enjoy your time there. Jason

What he said!
Best episode yet. Appreciate you bringing us along when you're already working and fighting some tough conditions. Super great watch. Thanks, Luc.
Oh nice - love to hear that!
Thanks a lot Luc for sharing this with us, it is much appreciated :)
You're most welcome1
Awesome video Luc! Its great getting a BTS look at a big budget reality show like this.

haha, let's charter a boat and go find it!
Bros and a good hang putting in work for the arts. It's beautiful man. It's what we should all be doing with life.
Challenging conditions, informative Behind the scenes and content. Thanks Luc.
thanks John!

glad you're liking it, appreciate it!
This was great, man it looks cold out there. Love seeing the nitty gritty of the day to day, wouldn't mind more of that.
Way too cold! And noted - always happy to share when I can!
Super cool to see the behind the scenes !
Thanks man, glad you liked it1
So cool to see. Please don’t stop!
I won't!

I think it might be interesting to hear what specifically you wear for cold weather gear. Gloves are a killer.
Crunchy snow and a search for the Yeti
all we really need in life!

haha, oh man, 3 months of this without a bed would be rough. I did all last summer in a tent, and I think that was my quota for the near future!
Damn yeah I can imagine! I love camping, but also don't want to do more than two weeks on the floor haha.

Where did you get that gloves? It’s look warm.
The Heat Company - pricey, but great for filmmakers
Does the flowtech fill up with water, when shooting in a river or lake? Or does it start to float up?
It fills then drains when you pull it out

That's what they sent us to shoot on...not my first choice, but it works!
