+The Defiant Infidel I was talking to Chalky the other day, (original Singer of psycroptic) He is a legend, and what a nice bloke....... This band has made so many great songs, from the colour of sleep, psycroptipath, beneath the ground we dwell, and the list goes on...
Amazing and original metal song/album overall. 3:20 starts such a wicked riff I can never get that part out of my head. These guys rock and Joe is legend unique among the best. Keep the greatness coming!
Too many people ignore Australia as one territory where death metal is active. So this man is one of the most underrated tech-death metal guitarists we know. Talking about such guys without him is never fair and meaningless. You can get excited of his amazingly hot licks in every track of every Psycroptic's album, I swear!
Australia is downright the best at prog and tech death, as opposed to American and Canadian corny overused scales and wannabe neoclassical style. Bands such as Psycroptic, Alarum and Nexus (which is very little known) are the perfect example how modern bands SHOULD sound.
@@igorkuzmanovic5990 I'm not sure of which specific "corny" and "wannabe neoclassical" American and Canadian bands you're talking about (something along the lines of Inferi, I guess), but I can assure you that there's a fuck ton of US-based and Canadian modern (although I'm not sure what do you mean by "modern", Alarum and Psycroptic are older than 20 years now, not exactly what I would consider "modern") tech death bands that do not fit this description at all. Examples I'd recommend: Artifical Brain (especially the debut album, great Demilich-inspired gurgly stuff), Augury (specifically the last album), Unhuman (the infamous what-the-actual-fuck subgenre of tech death), Cephalic Carnage (Misled by Certainty if you want a more refined and techy, but still raw sound; early albums if you want some grindcore-based chaos), Pyrrhon, Deviant Process. Btw, Alarum is not exactly "pure" tech death, because they sound a lot like 90s Atheist albums. Which means that they are, like Atheist, are closer to death/thrash metal than regular death metal in their roots. And if you want some great death/thrash-inspired American tech death band, then look no further that Revocation. Also, if we are talking about great Australian tech death, I'd like to mention Aeon of Horus last album, "Existence".
@@icipher6730 I definitely find Revocation to be really unique with their minimalistic arrangements and yet technical riffs, particularly their last two albums, which are more arrangement oriented than their previous work. As far as tech death is concerned, I haven't yet heard anything besides Necrophagist and Obscura's Diluvium that really sounds like something you won't hear in your everyday life. I'll check out those bands you mentioned tho. Cheers!
@@igorkuzmanovic5990 Yeah, Great Is Our Sin is probably my favorite album by Revocation. Didn't quite liked the latest one, but I have a weird habit of fully cracking and fully appreciating some albums only a few years later, so there may be a chance. >As far as tech death is concerned, I haven't yet heard anything besides Necrophagist and Obscura's Diluvium that really sounds like something you won't hear in your everyday life. Not sure if I read this sentence correctly. Can you elaborate a bit more? For example, why Diluvium specifically and not the other Obscura\s albums? And I don't want to appear annoying, but I still want to see some examples of tech death bands you deem "wannabe" and "corny", because some extreme metal or even tech death fans dislike the aforementioned Necrophagist on the basis of it seemingly being "wannaby neoclassical" (especially because their first exposure to the band was by the ever popular Fermented Offal Discharge and its' very neoclassical metal-inspired solo), but you seem to at least acknowledge them, if not appreciate.
One of my favorite guitarist. Not just because of the technique the music and the composition is very psyco. That's music, not just sound heavier than others.
Man that's sounds juicy as hell. Love it. Still learning but hopefully one day I can play this myself. It might take a while until I get to that level of precision and control at that speed.
I could listen to you play all day long. I can only listen to Psycroptic for awhile before the vocals start to get on my nerves. I try to tune them out and listen to your guitar work. If I could get a version of Psycroptic without ANY vocals I'd probably leave it playing for hours at a time. Good stuff. I really like your style.
Man,I love this album and this track is amazing, and playing it so effortlessly like that is something else, fantastic, keep it up Joe and keep posting vids, genius mate!!!
Everything in this video is just flawless Joe. Can't get enough of that beautiful guitar and watching you play this great song. Only one thing wrong though, where's your stuffed drop bears? Thought all aussies had at least one stuffed drop bear on their shelf?!! :)
You should see if you can get a deal with a metronome company. Maybe they'll pay you to calibrate the machines off of your picking hand! Unreal talent, and great job getting your skill in the mix.
+TikhoaV33 yes it s very good of course but it s not really original . listen to : dreams of the carrion kind (1993) first track by disincarnate, you'll understand what I mean... joe is great and it s difficult to really find something new !
I've been a huge fan since a chance viewing on RUclips years ago --before Psycroptic got their recognition around the world. I thought they were a very underrated band. There are very many tech death bands(most of them are boring) but the only ones that stand out for me are Psycroptic, Extol, Necrophagist, Theory in Practice, Decaptitated and a few others. That's a nice looking guitar--looks custom made. Psycroptic Kicks ASS!!!!!
+missthat5islandfeel If you love sick and technical but yet melodic guitar lines of Necrophagist and Theory, you gotta listen to the 'We Are The Nightmare' by Arsis. All other of their albums are much weaker, but this is the definition of technical death masterpiece for me.
Nah, I still do it heaps - it's definitely a big part of my playing but there's really only a handful of spots in psycro songs where it's called for really.
Joe Haley ah got ya. Just wanted to say also you are an amazing guitarist and you and the guys put on a hell of a show. Saw Psycroptic at Slims in San Francisco back in I think 2011 or so. Awesome show with Nile.
I think your riffs are so fucking epic. It killed me to see Necrophagist get all this credit when infact Psycroptic kills you will the level of tech that is seldom matched without it sounding like the typical techy wanking BS that almost every other band does. Its was crazy the 1st time I herd you guys it took me 3 or 4 songs before I realized how hard my ear had been fucked by the tech that was coming out of the 🔊. 🤘👹🤘
when I saw them last year he had his ormsby plugged into a peavey 6505, but he'll plug into whatever is there and still get his tone on point (it's in the hands) he's a super nice guy, I was talking guitar nerd with him after the show.
+ryanexsus It's a combination of these Australian made hand wound pickups and an overdrive pedal at the front of an EVH 5150. + He doesn't overload anything...The EVH has a slight mid exageration.... It's like Gain: 5: Bass: 6 Mid: 7 Treb: 6. Very sublte settings. He keeps everything very neutral so as not to muddy up his tone. There's really not a lot of gain or distortion on the signal... it's simple and elegant and extremely clear which is only a testament to his awesome playing and ability.
Definitly one of the best and most original sounding guitarists in metal!!!!

The sword of uncreation!
That is a great tone.
A playthrough where we can actually hear the players audio...thank you
This is just intense.
Dude's tone is awesome.
His technique is beyond.
Super melodic runs too.

This is nuts! Love your playing style :D
I really love this song, great playthrough quality joe!
0:54-1:46 may be my favorite Psycroptic riff.
Battling the misery of organon got me hooked on this band , dude is just crazy fast and precise. He at the top of the list of tech metal guitarists.

Deva Winblood they should definitively do an instrumental only album. The lyricist does suck balls

THERE'S A TAB BOOK COMING!? Oh dear fucking god. Yes.
Dude, you're the tech death riff overlord, all hail.
That fucking groove at 3:35, ORGASMIC.
+TikhoaV33 yes it s very good of course but it s not really original . listen to : dreams of the carrion kind (1993) first track by disincarnate, you'll understand what I mean...

Joe Haley Yes! I would love to see that one! Or Cruelty Incarnate. That song is so catchy.
If you could do one of these videos for "A Soul Once Lost", well, I think that would be pretty rad.
Yes that's the one I want to see
When are you going to show the tabs? i love this song and i want play it T_T

You God!

What tuning is this in? This is a pretty dope song
Drop D
Is the lead guitar dubbed with some kinda harmony/overtone thing.. sounds really rich?
Your riffs are dancing man! People of you don't understand, smoke a joint and just follow them riffs 😄
Signal chain pleasee, I want your chug tone.
How are you getting that TONE, man??
hey Joe, did you ditch the hybrid picking? I hardly see you do it anymore

hey Jo make tour to Shillong India
Curtis Castro hey man, I use it all the time but not so much in psycroptic. There haven't been a lot of instances where it's been necessary of late.
Curtis Castro and cheers man! Really appreciate it. Glad you dig our stuff. :)
Fucking Sick Mate.
So what tuning is this - some songs are tabbed on Ultimate Guitar in D Standard, some in Drop-D. Whish does he actually use?
I'd guess Drop D - he hits a lot of chords with the bottom strings open, so I've guess it's a drop-style tuning.
You and Longstreth.
Fucking Beautiful Riffage man!! \m/\m/
What is the tuning of the guitar?
+P-A Luneau Drop D

Tuning?
nice and cool and sexy bro
dat downstroke O_o
2 outputs on his guitar?
Shadow
Will Fletcher Guess you're right. He doesn't use a piezo.
Mathijs Ignoul I've seen guitars with two inputs, a passive and an active. This guitar doesn't though.
