    I'm actually shocked of how well F4 with 120fps at night. Aiming for 70-200mm F/2.8 though as this sounds like 1080@240fps is possible at around 12,800-25,000 ISO with the a7S III. Also it'll mostly be 4K@120fps instead of 1080p, but that 1080p looks so good when upscaled to 4K.

    I shoot landscapes mainly. I had the 70-200mm GM, but it's just too damn heavy. So, I switched to the 70-200mm G lens. I love the GM, but I use the G.

    It would be interesting to see an update on this the F4 compared with the new G Master F2.8. I hike a lot with the F4, I also travel very often, size and weight matters for me, so unless there is a very significant difference in image quality, probably F4 is a better choice for me. Even though, from the trinity of lenses perspective, I am using this lens far less versus the standard zoom or the wide angle zoom, I find that you must have a telephoto zoom in your backpack. As an example, If I would have had the F4 70-200 telephoto zoom while traveling in China, my terracotta soldiers pics would have been not great at all. I never did astro photography with my F4 20-70, but I would be interested in trying. Obviously F2.8 is better than F4 for astro, I own a star tracker but I have never used that witn an F4. That is definitely another criteria to consider.

    Thanks for such a thorough review. My question is: how adequate is the f4 in lower-light settings? I shoot high school football, and some Friday Night Lights aren’t very bright. I have an a7iii and an a9, so I’ll probably have to bump up the ISO, but that may mean cleaning up pixels in post. (I’m transitioning from Canon to SONY. My Canon 70-200/2.8 is 14 years old, but still does well in low light)

    • @collinebel9997
      @collinebel9997  4 года назад +3

      Geoff Powers thanks! I’ve always been impressed with the low light capabilities of my a7iii. Personally, I usually shoot football at f4 anyways, even if I have a lens capable of opening up more like a 2.8. So the limitations of this lens haven’t been a huge inconvenience for me. It probably helps also that college stadiums I shoot at are well lit at night. Most HS fields may be a bit darker.
      Hope this helps! You could always rent the 70-200 F4 to try it out. 👍🏼

    It is a shame that for sports and action photography there is no eMount lens (Sony or third party) to equal the Canon 300mm f/4L IS lens in focal range, aperture, price and weight and size. I used a combination of Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS and a 300mm f/4L IS lenses on a pair of Canon crop factor cameras (7D and 7D2).
    Too bad that Tamron doesn't have a 300mm or 400mm f/2.8 or even f/4 prime in an eMount version to match the 70-180mm f/2.8 eMount lens that they now offer.

    • @bryang4856

      With the new A1, I have to imagine shooting with the 70-200 at 200mm in Crop Mode would do the job and be significantly lighter.

    How has the F4 been holding up for you? I’ve seen some horror stories of the F4 breaking in half. I’m looking to buy either the 70-200 F4 or the Tamron 70-180 F2.8. I’m leaning towards the Sony because of the OSS, but I’m still on the fence mainly because of those horror stories.

    • @collinebel9997

      glosoya10 been holding up really well. I’ve shot numerous sporting events and lugged it around plenty in my camera bag. Haven’t had any issues and still impressed w it. You probably can’t go wrong with either the Sony or Tamron, besides getting that 20mm of extra zoom out of the Sony

    • @glosoya1095
      @glosoya1095 4 года назад +1

      Collin Ebel Thats awesome to hear! I shoot video for a university athletics department. Right now the only zoom lens I have access to is a 24-105. It works okay for most situations but I really do need the extra zoom for football, baseball and soccer. The 70-200 looks like a great focal length for sports.

    • @bryang4856
      @bryang4856 3 года назад

      I'm sure you've already purchased a lens at this point, but for what it's worth, one of the major advantages of the Sony lenses is that they are compatible with the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters, whereas the Tamron (and all third party lenses for that matter) are not. I recently upgraded from the Tamron 70-180 to the 70-200 f/2.8 GM and it is an absolute beast of a lens. Significantly larger and heavier, but I like that for its durability. The Tamron definitely feels a lot more cheaply made, despite it being a fantastic lens.

    I am about to be a Freshman in college and I have partnered with my colleges football / basketball teams to be their videographer. I have the Sony A7iii and I am interested in lenses. Would you strongly recommend the Sony 70-200mm (f4) if I can not afford the (f2.8)? Would this lens be able to record very good quality not slo-mo but normal speed. I am trying my hardest to save up for the 2.8 before the season starts, but if I end up getting the f4, it’ll perform just fine?

      Eternal Slayer being that it’s an F4 lens there are some limitations in low light. You will have to compensate by upping the ISO. For the best low light performance I’d go with the G Master.
