    Shenmue and Ocarina of Time are my favourite christmas games of all time, I will never forget playing them but also a little sad I wont quite be able to feel that absolute sense of magic as a 41 year old. Shenmue I got as an 18 year old in the year 2000 and just smoked weed playing it non stop for that magical Christmas week, its the most immersed I have ever been in a videogame hence its my favourite game of all time

      Ah Ocarina of Time! That was a magical Christmas for me too. I'm two years younger than you but it sounds like we had a similar experience. Yeah we can never fully recapture that magic, although I did my best at trying to articulate some of it with this video so that perhaps people can relate to it a little bit at least. I have really enjoyed playing some of this stuff with my Kid in recent years, having said that - Ocarina in particular still casts its spell even though it's 25 years old now. My daughter loves it. Thanks for watching.

      @@retromuel Yes it is rare that there is someone who not only played this game when it came out, but played it at Christmas time, from the UK, got hyped for it by reading the same Official Dreamcast UK or DCUK magazine, was stoned throughout the playthrough but also seems of had a mis-spent, middle-class upbringing!
      I still remember reading the 10/10 Official Dreamcast UK review over and over but unlike you I was able to wait to actually play it on Christmas day. I was surprised though to see you didn't know about Shenmue 2 being released over here, I got that for Christmas day 2001 and whilst didn't quite have the same 'wow factor' had an equally as good a time as I did the first, of course I was stoned throughout that playthrough too!

      Yeah I think I may have kind of drifted away from gaming altogether for a brief period of time there. The Dreamcast had been discontinued by that point I think and I just kind of had my head in drugs and music I think. I was at 6th form college at the time. Not entirely sure myself to be honest! I was besotted with it when I played in Spring 2002 though. I got through some Nag Champa that week!

      @@retromuel I remember feeling like I was almost going off gaming before Shenmue came out it really re-ignited my passion for gaming which hasn't really waned to this day. I have played many games equal to my experience of it but it has never been bettered. Do you still game much these days?

      @@gillri I do have a PS5 and a decent gaming PC but I don't really use them that much for gaming to be honest, particularly the PS5. I find a lot of the big budget stuff kind of bland and I find a lot of the indie games a bit TOO indie, if that makes any sense. I miss the "mid-budget" games that were all over the place in the late 90s/early 2000s. The ones that were interesting but still had some money and resources behind them. There are some exceptions though. Really enjoyed playing "Immortality" recently. Quite enjoyed Horizon Zero Dawn. Armored Core 6 was fun too. The last game that really "wowed" me graphically was probably Uncharted 4 ten years or so ago. I do play Switch quite a lot with my wife and kid - Zelda, Mario, Kirby, Pikmin etc - those games have probably been my favourite gaming experiences of recent years.

    Play this every year. On steam though. Love Nights and this feature was such an ahead of it's time thing.

    Great video! If you don’t mind me asking what are the settings you used on the retrotink for Shenmue (scanline/scaling)? I have a similar setup to yours with 480i through RGB, but it looks really fantastic on your setup.

    • @retromuel
      @retromuel  Год назад

      Thanks! I actually sold my Retrotink a few months ago but to the best of my memory it's 480i RGB, with the Dreamcast's weird aspect ratio corrected to a proper 4:3. Then I believe it's one of the "consumer TV" masks over the top - a soft one that doesn't really have visible scanlines.

      @@retromuel Thank you! These old systems are definitely best displayed on a nice consumer crt but unfortunately I just don’t have a space for it anymore. The tink does a pretty good job at getting these to look good on a modern screen though.
