I loved this film as a kid - it used to always play on the Saturday afternoon ‘Sci-Fi’ movie time slot in Canada in the 70’s and I remember thinking it was really scary - I just loved those films and some have remained my all time favourites - ‘The Day The Earth Stood Still’ , ‘Forbidden Planet’ , ‘Howard Hawks’ Thing From Another World’ and ‘Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein’ are all on my top 20 films of all time list - oldies but goodies! Thanks for the good mems!!
Possible correction: The choice of photos of the actors seems to indicate that the part of Mary Royce was played by "Kim Spaulding", but the latter, is in fact, the name of the actor who played Col. Van Huesen, a male character. Mary Royce was played by Ann Doran.
I'm a big fan of the 50s science fictions, but just finally saw this one tonight. I really enjoyed it a lot. Quite a bit of fun. Thanks for the background about the film.
Day of the Dove was a great episode. Barbara Eden's husband Micahel Ansara played the Klingon Kang, who gives Kirk a good hearty slap on the back at the end. 😅
I saw this movie when I was a kid. Today I’m still 74 years old and I love this movie. It still scares the hell out of me and should to everybody. I’d bring it back to the movie theater and let everybody enjoy it. It’s one out standing movie. I’m suer everybody will enjoy it. 😊👍🏻
Hey Jonny, thanks for another great video. I have a request. Since you did Battlestar Galactica (1978-79) and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1979-81) I'd love to see you do a video for the other big budget space opera series from the 1970's, Space 1999! I'm surprised you haven't done it already given that you've done BG and BR.
This is the one sci fi 1950's film that would only come on TV at 2:00 -3:00am when u were asleep back in the 90's it was so rare to be able to watch this especially after always watching Saturday night : "Monster Vision" on AMC & always seeing *The Thing From Another World* & all the others like this film with your dad just to have him tell u about this secret B movie that became legendary but only because u were just too young to stay up late enough to actually be able to watch it ❤️ Its the original midnight movie to me!!!!
IT is a better then average science fiction film, it works on many levels and is so entertaining. It's only when you think too logical you destroy the fun of this film. One of my favorites.
How did I miss this amazingly entertaining film when it was released (or escaped) in 1958? I had a morning paper route (Dayton Journal Herald) for the express purpose of funding my addiction to Saturday and Sunday afternoon trips to my favorite cinemas. My guess is that this film and its double feature partner were shown at one of the several drive in theaters and, because we had no access to an automobile, I missed seeing it till only recently. I give this movie the highest marks possible and will do so for any movie that features a crew that arms themselves with bazookas and hand grenades in space!!!
Sir the way you were speaking, I thought it was Orson Welles. Then in the future of 1973, we have made our second manned trip to Jupiter..😆 Another great video..keep up the great work 👍 👏
@@4gegtyreeyuyeddffvyt I've been recovering after being in and out of hospital. But I'm glad to announce I'm starting work on some new videos next week. I will be back 🙂
Hey, a lot of science fiction has done projections into the what if future. " Voyage to the bottom of the sea" Seaview, launched in 1972, " Land of the Giants " taking place in the year 1982. So, I guess we had rockets to Mars in 1973, This movie was made in 1958.
"IT's'' premise of a monster loose on a space ship seems pretty clearly to have been borrowed for "Alien", but a comic book story called "The Seeds Of Jupiter" was also a big influence on Dan O'Bannon's concept for "Alien." And though O'Bannon got screen credit for it, the script for "Alien" was heavily revised by the film's producers (they even conceived the idea of one of the crew members turning out to be a robot).
That was a great video, thanks. I love this movie but I can’t really take it very seriously, there’s too many logical errors in it, not least using guns, bazookas and grenades in a space rocket! It’s great fun though.
As far as I'm concerned, to the extent it worth giving much thought, I feel it is built into the story by implication that the ship is made in such a way that it can handle the firepower, otherwise someone would've said "we can't do that!---it'll tear a hole in the ship!". These are reasonably seasoned professionals. This is a ship of the future, not a flimsy NASA vehicle. Any ship of a near-ark size, with the capability of transporting and sustaining a large crew, is equipped with artificial gravity and has its own atomic pile is not something that can be undone by some bullets and grenades. I never understood why this is taken as some error in logic. The thing that struck me as illogical---and it's not really important---is the creature bending a rifle half of which is a wooden stock (it was the only rubber-cast rifle prop available on the cheap), or the 1973 setting (the script indicated the year as not long after 2020, but was changed by the producers in the narration). Well, that's just how I look at it. I don't think anyone thought the firepower used on board the ship was somehow impossible since it was a tale about very advanced technological capabilities..ie a tale about the future. I was thinking---relative to the explosives "complaint" about this film----how some things from around the same era were just taken for granted in SF: how the Enterprise on Trek, or the Seaview on Voyage Bottom of the Sea were still in one piece after being battered about, fired upon, attacked etc every other episode, or so it seemed. Or how the ship in PLANET OF THE APES didn't just burn up in the Earth's atmosphere upon re-entry, or that someone could've survived such a crash.
Me too loved the king kong movie from 1933 now I got to reference some lines from it do you always take the pictures yourself ever since a trip I made to Africa I'd have got a swell picture of a charging rhino but the cameraman got scared that darn fool I was right there with a rifle seems he did t trust me to get the rhino before it got him I havent fooled with a cameraman since I do it myself🤗
