When there is a profession that could elicit laughs, John Daily ALWAYS begins the questioning with Steve Allen, whose questions are, I believe, prepared with the knowledge of the profession. It can't be just coincidence that Steve Allen always begins and that his questions "innocently" wander into hilarity.
I know I'm literally a decade late, but I think they did give them some pre-lines, quite what percent they were given I am not sure, maybe just some jokes or question to ask, but not know the final answer. There were a few times when the shock or the 'OH I GOT IT NOW' surprise seemed genuine though, so either they are really good actors, or it's not all planned. Oddly a bit like how modern pro wrestling works.
Shape of things to come. Steve Allen is a guest panelist in November 1952. From Jan 1953 to March 1953, Allen and Block would appear together during Block's last six appearances. Allen very funny. The mystery guest clip of this episode is posted in YouTubia: Walter Winchell.
Ironically enough, many years later, the name of the character played by Kaye Ballard on the 2-season sitcom THE MOTHERS-IN-LAW was - guess what? Kaye Buell. Fun fact.....Very entertaining clip; thank you for sharing this with us!
Always calalilygirl! Her hair and glasses, which 1950's lad wouldn't say no to that? By the way are you a fan of retro styled items such as vintage clothes? Your username has a sweet rockabilly feel to it, could be a title to an Elvis song :3
This one is hard to figure out, even after watching the whole segment. The product is "shorts", they are painted, they are "underwear", but it would normal for people to see Steven in them in his home?!
Wait. Paints *what* on men's shorts? And why? I'm very confused. I mean, mothers sending kids to camp might write their names in magic marker on the waist band, much to the child's embarrassment, but what in the world else would you paint on men's shorts? Maybe I don't want to know. Really cute guest though. She would have been considered just a tad nerdy back then, but today nerdy is in. She is really beautiful underneath the nerdiness.
Arlene did look better;especially in the fifties...by the 60's she was showing her age and she lost a little something as she aged. Love her to death but it's true. Nothing can hurt her now she is a heavenly angel for sure.
Handpaints men's shorts..... hmmmm.... to me that could also sound like she paints on naked men in such a way that it would look like the men are wearing shorts!

Glamorous and cute at the same time. always a classy combo.
calalilygirl
Glamorous?? Who?!
LOVE Steve Allen's reactions!!!!
He didn't look too happy with the audience laughing.
Actually, neither of them did.
He's always so funny even if he isn't trying
Sometimes I wonder if the show told the guest panelists what questions to ask.

5:32, is it bulletproof, hahahaha hahahaha hahahaha
The host reaction.
That was just part of the beauty and uniqueness of Dorothy as a panelist. Much missed after she was gone.
One of the funniest segments!
Kay is soo cute :3
Yes, an understated beauty
Arlene looks so great in this video!
Such a cute innocent girl. She's somehow both plain looking and quite attractive.
i'm disappointed they didn't show her handiwork
Steve Allen's deadpan puzzlement whenever he accidentally asks a question that could be interpreted in an off-color way brings joy to my life.
Thanks very much for taking the time to present this.
@marcsilcockfan1989 I know, I think Dorothy had sort of a disgusted look on her face when it was revealed what she did.

This show peaked in the 1950's.

Most difficult occupation ever to guess?
you are quite right, even though unseen. after my answer I did concede that fact..
Sort of weird in that they didn't explain what that meant exactly, and she was saying they were not available in regular stores.
@63utuber Great point and you're right. And while they'd be normal for a person to wear they wouldn't be hanging around your livingroom.
A little classier than Let's Make A Deal.
I KNEW Steve would be first!!!
Wow you're absolutely right!
BULLETPROOF is awesome
Thank you for sharing!!
GREAT ONE. FUNNY
I noticed that, too. I really think John should have given him a "no" there.
@63utuber The question was would they be found in the home, which is a yes. It doesn't mean that it would be out in the open.
Since she got married she "would be on her last lap!" Psychic imprint!

Great info!! Love stuff like that.

What the heck? Bulletproof?
bulletproof lol
@shoredude2 Nope, Steve would be seen in "them".
And the last remark indicates the reason why Hal Blocks time at the panel was limited.
+Celisar1 It was funny. What was wrong with that remark?? Hal was funny. Loosen up.
I agree Mr. Block was not suitable for this show.
Believe it or not when he first came on it has been written he saved the show.
Brooke Hanley
It’s a fact that Block was fired for such remarks and inappropriate actions.
Deal with it.
Celisar1 I couldn’t understand what he said - can someone enlighten me please?

Bullet-proof! Ha!
@shoredude2 True
i think arlene looks better blond and younger

We all show our age. What’s wrong with aging?
