That's awesome. I've been watching him for a while, and it's nice to run across somebody who knew him. Seems to me he used slightly more colorful language when the cameras weren't rolling
I'm not an American but one of the things that I like about American people is that they like to pass the baton to the next generation . Americans are generous people not like other nationalities who wants to hide the knowledge from others. Thank you for posting these videos from a great teacher.
Larry is just one of those people who you automatically respect and admire. Such a genuine human being. I wish there were more videos out there with him.
Many different designs for each type of project are also included. For example, there are hundreds of designs ruclips.net/user/postUgkxb2mhCug-GkCWrq69Ce2I0nM0D4QpxAqu for outdoor buildings, from small sheds all the way up to a complete stable. Choose whatever type of shed or storage house is right for you. Pick from fancy ones or more utilitarian designs.
I started reading Fine Homebuilding in the late 80's and discovered Larry Haun. Sad he is gone. I learned so much from him. He was very efficient and knew how to get it done fast and correct. Better yet he took the time to teach us! I feel like I have lost a friend.
very inspiring to see an old timer out there still doin it. Im only 40 and sometimes get bummed out that there some things i cant do anymore. he just told me i still can!
+dave underwood Stretching in my opinion and staying fit is a big part of being able to maintain this kind of work. The heavier you get, and the less flexible you become the more difficult this work is on your body.
I have to disagree with Metus. You don't have to be "fit" for this, you just need to have a good head, basic math and some sort of skill level. Not every person is a size 10 waist and I've seen some pretty hefty guys lay some wood on a property no different than the skinnies. I'm seen skinnies who can do what the big guys do. It's only as difficult as your mind allows it. Hey I'm 38, chubby and smoke, when on-site, there's no signs of me being a smoker so I don't burn out, wind out and wind out. It's all in your head buddy. Now get your 40 year old ass out there and lay some wood, need some help? Shoot me a message, lets team up ;-)
Been framing for 30 years , I love it ! These guys definitely know what there doing , stacking lay out on floor joists is the way to go ! Great job !!!
Nice to see the elders passing their knowledge & wisdom rather than seating on their lazy chair & feeling sorry for themself and cursing everybody else. As to other comments that have to criticise everybody else or boast that they can do better....wait until you're Larry's age and see what you can do then! Good on you Larry...keep up the great work!
Im an electrician by trade and i thoroughly love watching these videos . This man is a true master of his craft. I only hope that i can still can keep going when im 80. Much love and respect to larry haun . May u rest in peace brother
Larry Haun taught half of Russian carpenters how to build frame houses! Greetings from Arkhangelsk. Thanks for the video. I liked how you fixed the lags)
I like how he teaches. I wish the camera man would film what his hands are doing and where exactly he lines up his marks. I still get it. However, it would help a beginner like myself. What a master builder this guy is. Larry is your name? Hats off to you sir. Great instructor.
I agree with this comment. This guy is amazing but I don't want to see his face I need to see exactly what he is doing with his hands. I think both close ups and seeing the bigger picture would be helpful. Maybe I need to find the framing 099 video because he goes very quickly in his explanations and uses framing vocabulary words that I am not familiar with. I need more broken down step by step and teach me what all these new words are. I think it's awesome how he doesn't use a nail gun and can get a nail in with one whack of the old fashioned hammer.
The fluidity of that hammer swing is just perfect. Can you even imagine the hours he has hammering nails? That's the only way you become that efficient.
This guy reminds me so much of a guy I build houses for..He is almost 80 and he is there almost everyday pulling nails from boards when I am framing for him...i could only wish when i was that old that i would still love to do this...Thanks for the video
Nice to see the master at work. And I'm loving the irony of guys talking about Larry being slow- he literally wrote the book on framing. I would have loved to have gotten a chance to work for him and learn from him.
A lot of you clearly haven't seen Larry haun in his younger days. His carpentry abilities are jaw dropping. He died of cancer not to long after this video. It is sad to watch if you compare it to older videos. So those of you saying he's slow do some research and you'll definitely change your mind.
Man ohhhh Man... this Oldtimer knows his stuff... thank you sir... one of the most informative video I have found.... Great clip guys... thank you so much...
Man if I could have I would have signed a contract to Mr. Haun for half my working life to gain probably 1/3 of his knowledge. He just seemed to be the type to show you if you just listened. Some of my mentors when I was coming up in the carpentry world always referred to Scott Haun as a bench marker and those guys were ultra smart when it came to framing. To bad he's long gone.
Only those that have done hard manual labor in the elements can appreciate how well was still able to move around at his age. Even moreso, knowing he passed away shortly after that recording.
Larry Haunt has been doing this stuff for a long long while... and he is extremely meticulous. Watch his older videos.... now that is house building!!!! No cutting corners!!! I wish he lived near me so he could build my house!!!!!

chapel king Larry would not have agreed with you. He believed in meditation and was very spiritual. He was as Leary’s looking to raise people up and help them. He definitely was not a bitter old man
Yup you gotta see his old videos. I'm a framer myself I'm pretty good at what I do but makes me look like a rookie . The best Common raft framer ever he and his bro joe are bosses.
this guy trained framing crews ( 3 men) that could ( still) start with a foundation and hand nail 200 sqft homes, in three days. Their roofs are hand cut, not trusses. When they use air nailers, they cut 4 hours off the time. Once the plates are down the lay out guy gets a 5 minute head start. Then the other two following start scattering studs and nailing them.
Didn't find that on their website, but did find a RUclips video for an item that's probably similar (apparently they won't let you post a URL even for another video on their site). Thanks for the info.
