Absolutely fantastic! As a huge fan of Korngold’s music I’m shocked I’ve never heard this piece before! Wonderful discovery, one of his most brilliant pieces for full orchestra!
Over the last decade i have developed a deep love of korngolds music. I think this piece one of his very best.... and think the man is the most underrated composer of the 20th C. If you haven't listened to Der Tote stadt.... for God's sake do.
Wow what a great early piece when he was still at Vienna! It was dedicated to Richard Strauss, you can clearly hear his influence, especially in orchestration (such wonderful Horn-writing, use of rare Bass Trumpet). But you already can hear his later characteristics in his film music with the flashing winds/strings, harmonic development etc. Thank you so much and please more, more, more!
That's also his first work that public disliked ! He reused some part of this one in the score for The Adventures of Robin Hood if i can remember correctly!
korngold might as well be the most underrated composer to grace the 20th century
