I read I who have never known men because of your recommendation in the beginning of this year and havent been this stunned with a book in ages. When I finished it, I just sat in silence and had to let it sink in for a couple minutes. Was a really emotionally hard book to read. Felt at the same time hopeful and hopeless. But loved it!
Hi, Emily! I have been watching your channel for a very very long time and I remember when you’d answer these questions with Harry Potter as the book/series you’ve read the most, or Sam Gamgee being one of your all time favorite characters. It’s nice to see how your answers are changing, because mine have changed too, though still Sam is baby and needs to be protected, but overall our tastes have matured and refined, and it’s nice to see you enjoying more and more books that aren’t the most mainstream, but they’re your stream haha. Not me waiting for you to whip out Ice Planet Barbarians in the "guilty pleasure" category 🤣🤣 (I think you reading that was more a guilty pleasure for everyone else TBH). Also, I COMPLETELY agree with you about Dune. That is one of the only scifi books I've read that I like the movie adaptations so much more than the books. Have you read "The Book That Wouldn't Burn" by Mark Lawrence? I'm 25% of the way through it and I feel like you'd like it. Happy Monday! xo

When it comes to series, I'd recommend Jean Johnson's " Theirs Not to Reason Why" series (love the tropes in the series) which is also connected to her "First Salik War" series about humanity's first contact with other alien races. I'd also recommend Dennis E. Taylor's Bobiverse series for something more light and fun to read (though books haves some chapters that aren't so funny))
I totally ready “I who have never known men” bc you raved so much about it and OMG. It was absolutely mind boggling for being a simple story. LOVED IT.

Highly recommend Funny Boy: The Richard Hunt Biography by Jessica Max Stein. Hunt was one of the OG core Muppet performers. Scooter, Beaker, Janice, Statler, Sweetums. Nobody has really done a deep dive into his life before.
Book Lovers and Beach Read are probably my favorite contemporary romances! Some books I always recommend are The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, Where the Crawdads Sing, The Hunger Games/Catching Fire, Daisy Jones and The Six, The Nightingale, and House in the Cerulean Sea!
Love the description of The Sparrow as A Little Life in space! I remember you've read 3-Body Problem, which I'm about to finish today. Are you planning on watching the series when it starts later this week?
I read I Who Have Never Known Men last weekend. Wow! I actually vlogged it too, but it mostly consists of me saying, “It’s so interesting!” over and over lol. I didn’t think I’d like it that much because it’s not my usual genre, but it was mind-blowing! The book I tend to recommend everyone read is Watership Down by Richard Adams. It is my all-time favourite book. I know it’s about rabbits, lol, but I adore the characters and it’s full of action and I love the world he creates with their mythology.
I feel the exact same way about the “Evelyn” books, and had the same experience as you. I read and enjoyed them when they were in favor and now that there’s backlash, I reread and yeah, I can see the criticisms but I still like them.
The Secrets Of Droon by Tony Abbott is one of my fav series. Incredible world building and character arcs. The cover artwork is gorgeous. It might be for kids but still deserves some attention. I don't understand how it hasn't been adapted for tv yet. It's perfect for the medium.
I really love when you just randomly pick up a book that you don't even knew anything before or wasn't in your radar and it ends up being a favorite. Like you with I who have never known men. It happened to me with Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto and more recently with Gods of Jade and Shadow. Also, I read a while back Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson and it was okay but I didn't like it that much because I thought the characters were a bit superficial. Now the Stormlight Archive sounds interesting, is it better in that sense? Emily is making me consider reading that, The will of the many and Blood over Bright Haven 😅
Did you hear that Blood Over Bright Haven was picked up by Del Rey? Sounds like ML Wang might be published by trad publishing in the future! Only downside to new readers is that the ebook is now quite a bit more expensive 😭
This is interesting. I bought Blood Over Bright Haven about a month ago from Amazon. I looked today and it’s not available in paperback anymore. Glad I got it when I did.
The ending was definitely on the weaker side but I think a lot of people found it confusing. Tbf the first 100 pages are lol I loved the concept so much tho!
I totally hear what you’re saying about Dune being slow paced and dry (pun intended). That said, if you hated Paul’s character development in the book but liked the earlier themes/ideas, you may get something out of the second book (Dune Messiah). Or just wait until the third movie comes out - something to consider!
Something’s becoming tv shows if you didn’t know are the inheritance games and A Good Girls Guide to Murder series. Both are definitely becoming shoes soon. AGGGTM is coming out this year I think but I don’t know when The Inheritance Games is coming out yet.
Ok that's it I surrender, I'll read I who have never known men ☺️ About Divine rivals, I'm surprised you're going to read it, I really can't imagine you liking it... but I'll be here to watch your review! 😉
So many things I agree on but the time loop thing is going over my head 😂 wrong place wrong time and Evelyn Hardcastle were awful in my opinion, the repetition made it so boring I DNFd both 😅 love that you brought Blood over bright haven to my life, it’s indeed amazing.

I didn’t notice any big difference. I did like reading it more but it’s just because I got more out of it by reading the book again. I’m sure I’ll feel like that each time I reread it
see now for the longest time I took your opinion of dune as fact but then i actually read it and i disagree so badly (I do have my own issues with it tho don't get me wrong) but I can see exactly how it would feel boring and tedious to some people! someone described it as delightfully boring and yeah I have to agree, cause it worked for me like a charm lol

Hi Emily, mentioning you love scifi books I have a question. Apart from Neuromancer that eveyone knows, I was reommended to read Schismatrix Plus (1996) by Bruce Sterling as a classis cyberpunk piece which was an inspiration for later works by other famous authors. To my great surprise, almost no one talks about this book, why? Have you read it? If not look it up. Thanks.
I don't know about this book, but I want to recommend Tad Williams tetralogy City of Golden Shawods, they are soo good (virtual reality but so much more)
As someone who uses Ice Planet Barbarians to get out of a reading slump, I thought IPB2 was "better" than the first one. I liked the characters more at least. I'm always interested in seeing another IPB gigglefest vlog from you 😂
blood over bright haven is being traditionally published! it's great to see M.L. Wang get picked up, but it will probably be out of print until it comes out through the publishing house T T
As somebody who doesn't really pick up sci-fi: I don't like stuff set in the outer space and futuristic, high-tech society. I like supernatural stuff though (like The X-Files lol).
I feel you hate for DUNE. It's my most hated book of all time. It took that spot and nothing can fight it down from there. This could only become so popular pushed by certain men wanting to be the chosen one, and they will forever deny that there is something wrong with this book. While the list of WTFs about Dune is eternal. I also gave it one star and it didn't take a day for men on goodreads to ask me why I would do that.
Popular book i hated: graceling by kristen cashore. Nope. Nope. Nope. Book that needs more hype: the blood trials by n.e. davenport. My favorite book of last year !
I have to disagree on Blood over Bright Haven being a bingeread, at least it wasn't for me. It was great, I also gave it easily 5 stars, but it was so PAINFUL to read. The emotional hurt! the rage! I kept having to put it down, because I was in no condition to read something so heavy and I needed to read something lighthearted and humorous on the side to not fall into a reading slump.
I'm a sad person since besides my mom, nobody in my circle reads, so can't recomend books. And my mom and i have different tastes (which is funny since it was she who would bring fantasy books from the library to me). She reads literature, classics and magical realism (one of her favourite authors is Isabel Allende and if you know her books, are full of magical realism). And I am more of a fantasy, science fiction, non-fiction kind of gal.
I’m on the same boat as you. My mom is the only avid reader in my admittedly small circle and our tastes are so different 😭. She likes to read steamy historical fiction, metaphysical books, pseudo science, magical realism and generally things that have a guaranteed happy ending. 😢 I read a lot of different genres except those lol. Right now I’m reading The Unmaking of June Farrow and 8 minutes in I’m bored.
I also bought a beautiful edition of Dune, so sure I would love it. Read one third and gave up lol. I think the movies are the perfect adaptation, because I find them equally boring.
MY Guilty pleasure is Richter Scale by Davies if you want Ice Setting and Alien Bond Mate with more brain and consent. 1000 better than Ice Planet Barberians [ that book makes me what to break something]
I bought I who have never known men because it has been mentioned so many times and I got curious, but it was the worst read of 2023 for me :D mild spoiler: NOTHING HAPPENS - and the writing wasn't good enough to divert my mind from the .. nothingness
İ finished “Jade City” yesterday and İ think İ’m never going to stop grieving Lan 😭 why would Fonda Lee do that to me?😭 the second and third one are on their way to my, but İ’m gonna be honest, İ’m kinda scared to read them, because İ know Fonda is going to hurt me again?😭
I love Dune with all my heart and soul BUT a blasphemous opinion I have is that Wheel of Time sucks ass. Terrible. And I love lots of high epic fantasy but NOT WoT.
I do think you are wrong about Dune. I would have expected that you would have been very intrigued by the Bene Gesserit. I might suggest that you listen to some youtube videos that do detailed summaries of the series to get more about them. As the series develops we learn more and more about them, and I really think that they would speak to your interest in feminist prose. The summaries might be adequate for the purpose of enjoying the idea of the sisters without the mechanics of Frank Herbert's writing that you really disliked. Or, maybe wait until the TV series about them comes out. Might get you the good stuff? In contrast, I read /I Who Have Never Known Men/ on your recommendation. I found the premise intriguing - perhaps as intriguing as I have in other of my favorite sci-fi novels. However, for me the prose in English was so dry that I had trouble staying engaged and motivated to keep with it. I understood that the narrator was emotionally altered by the circumstances of her upbringing. For me, though, I wondered if it would have had more impact were it not a first person perspective.
Hey Emily, just started the vid but I felt like I had to comment since you've mentioned the g*nocide going on in a previous video, Taylor Jenkins Reid is a zi*nist, so that would be nice to not talk abt such authors (many popular ones on booktube atm are as well). That being said it's your videos so you can do what you feel like, but yeah!
@@BookswithEmilyFox people are calling TJR a “Zionist” because soon after 10/7 she shared these two posts to her story: one mourning both Palestinian and Israeli lives lost, and another with a video of a father of one of the Israeli hostages hoping for peace. Anyone who sees an issue with either of those posts needs to reevaluate their priorities. I would suggest you look into anyone’s accusations of “Zionism” before you take them at face value. TJR won’t suffer from you not mentioning her on your channel since she is already so popular (and has been criticized for her representation of WOC anyway), but other less well-known authors accused in the future might.

9:00 😂 totally. I explained the system to my husband and he was like, “so a pyramid scheme.” Yes. It literally is a triangle.
I’ve read all but three and two of them are ones you don’t like!!
As someone who uses Ice Planet Barbarians to get out of a reading slump, I thought IPB2 was "better" than the first one. I liked the characters more at least. I'm always interested in seeing another IPB gigglefest vlog from you 😂
Damn it.. if my slump doesn’t go away in April I’ll pick it up 😂
blood over bright haven is being traditionally published! it's great to see M.L. Wang get picked up, but it will probably be out of print until it comes out through the publishing house T T
I’m happy for her… but that sucks until then lol
I bought Blood Over Bright Haven based on your recommendation, buuuuut I have not read it yet because I am who I am. 😂
I do not shut up about Becky Chambers! And NK Jemisin. And Emily Henry 😂
As somebody who doesn't really pick up sci-fi: I don't like stuff set in the outer space and futuristic, high-tech society. I like supernatural stuff though (like The X-Files lol).
I’d love a video of book recommendations to start learning French.
I’ve never had to learn French.
Once you have some vocabulary you could try rereading books (especially YA) in French.
Radiance by Grace Draven is super readable and got me out of my slump
Housemaid was horrible but readable and busted my slump.
I do have that one on my shelf... I might have to try it
It was so bad that I read it in one sitting and was texting my sister the whole time about it because she had just read it. It was fun.
I still can't find Blood over Bright Haven. I would love to read it.😢
It was just picked up by a publisher! It will be republished and come out in October!
I DNFd Dune after a couple paragraphs 😂 tedious is the perfect word.
I love Evelyn 🥹
oh my god. I read 3 pages of Dune and then closed it and said no, thank you.
As soon as you say you disliked dune I was like YES my people 😂
I feel you hate for DUNE.
I’ll buy that copy of Dune from ya 🙃
Shipping anything in Canada is so expensive, it’s not worth it 🙃
Had to check on Blood Over Bright Haven and my Libby says the audiobook is publishing 10/28/24!!!! :)
Yes it just got picked up by a publisher!
Popular book i hated: graceling by kristen cashore. Nope. Nope. Nope.
Book that needs more hype: the blood trials by n.e. davenport.
My favorite book of last year !
all the books that you can read as a stand alone vid.. please ;)
I've done some :) ruclips.net/video/Fgb6WR-W-lc/видео.html

I haven’t watch the second one yet… I’m not in a rush!
hahaaaa 'i will continue to hate on it i dont care' savage! but also valid
Dune sucks (althou back in the day it was mind blowing), and Way of Kings will always be my favorite!
❤📚🐱
I'm just here wondering why you haven't gotten rid of Dune yet. 😂
I was going too but that copy is pretty
MY Guilty pleasure is Richter Scale by Davies if you want Ice Setting and Alien Bond Mate with more brain and consent.
1000 better than Ice Planet Barberians [ that book makes me what to break something]
I loved The Will of the Many such a great book loved it so much 🌞🌞🩵🩵🌞💜💜🧡💚🧡🌷🌷💔💔🩷💗📚📚📚📙📙📙❤️🌻🌻🌻🌼🌼💗💗🌈🌈📖📙📙📖📙📙📖🪻🌷💖🩵🩵💜🧡🧡🩷🩷💛🌷🪻🪻🌈💗❤️❤️💜💜💜💜💜❤️❤️❤️❤️🌼🌻🌻
I bought I who have never known men because it has been mentioned so many times and I got curious, but it was the worst read of 2023 for me :D
mild spoiler: NOTHING HAPPENS - and the writing wasn't good enough to divert my mind from the .. nothingness
Everytime Emily recommends a little life my heart breaks a little...because that book sucks 😂
She will. Again and again and again 😭
Thanks for letting me know I had no idea!
