What's your most recommended book?
For sci fi, I recommend Project Hail Mary. I know it wasn’t your fav but the three people I’ve told about it, really enjoyed it. I tried to read Dune years ago and thought it was awful. Have seen it in bookstores lately and thought maybe I should give it another try. After listening to you, I’ll quit while I’m ahead. 😂
Probably House in the Cerulean Sea because I feel like it can cut across a lot of different genre tastes and preferences.
Shark Heart! I know it won't be everyone's thing but I think everyone should give it a try
Funny story by Emily Henry ❤❤❤❤❤
I am an unapologetic broken record for my fave: Adrift by Brideau but now I also tell everyone about I Who Have Never Known Men (thanks to you for convincing me to read it) and another weird novella called The English Understand Wool. 😊
ml wang announced in her newsletter last week that blood over bright haven got picked up by a traditional publisher is going to be re released this year!! hopefully this will encourage more readers to pick it up, it was my favorite book of last year 🙏
Nice! Now I have to decide if I want the copy that's out now, or if I wait for the new edition later this year. Hmmmm....
I've recently bought I who have never known men because of you! I'm looking forward to reading it.
Yay!! I Hope you’ll love it!
Join the club of people who found this book because of Emily and fell in love with it! 😂🎉
Hi, Emily! I have been watching your channel for a very very long time and I remember when you’d answer these questions with Harry Potter as the book/series you’ve read the most, or Sam Gamgee being one of your all time favorite characters. It’s nice to see how your answers are changing, because mine have changed too, though still Sam is baby and needs to be protected, but overall our tastes have matured and refined, and it’s nice to see you enjoying more and more books that aren’t the most mainstream, but they’re your stream haha.
Keep it up, Emily!
If you know Emily, you know “I who have never known men” is her number 1 favorite ❤
I just don't know why.... I read it beacuse of Emily's endless rave about it, but evne though it is a short book I could barely finish it, it is SOOOO BOOOORIIIIING
@@LittleDaff yeah I’m still working on it and it’s been months lol
I feel like it’s really repetitive so far
Like they set up camp then someone dies then they walk again, set up camp someone else dies and I’m just waiting for the ending to come. I hear it’s not a good ending but I’ll know once I finish it lol
I read I who have never known men because of your recommendation in the beginning of this year and havent been this stunned with a book in ages. When I finished it, I just sat in silence and had to let it sink in for a couple minutes. Was a really emotionally hard book to read. Felt at the same time hopeful and hopeless. But loved it!
It's so crazy that it was published 30 years ago and didn't have much hype. It's so underrated and I want everyone to read it!!
Not me waiting for you to whip out Ice Planet Barbarians in the "guilty pleasure" category 🤣🤣 (I think you reading that was more a guilty pleasure for everyone else TBH). Also, I COMPLETELY agree with you about Dune. That is one of the only scifi books I've read that I like the movie adaptations so much more than the books. Have you read "The Book That Wouldn't Burn" by Mark Lawrence? I'm 25% of the way through it and I feel like you'd like it. Happy Monday! xo
I loved the book that wouldn’t burn. It’s one of my absolute favorite books!
I picked up Dune thinking I maybe wasn’t going to enjoy it but… I loved it.
I totally ready “I who have never known men” bc you raved so much about it and OMG. It was absolutely mind boggling for being a simple story. LOVED IT.
I actually like Ruby Dixon's books. If I were to recommend books to someone, these days I'd recommend The Color of Distance by Amy Thomson, Remnant Population by Elizabeth Moon, Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson, Seveneves by Neil Stephenson.
When it comes to series, I'd recommend Jean Johnson's " Theirs Not to Reason Why" series (love the tropes in the series) which is also connected to her "First Salik War" series about humanity's first contact with other alien races. I'd also recommend Dennis E. Taylor's Bobiverse series for something more light and fun to read (though books haves some chapters that aren't so funny))
Agree with the The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo! I randomly pick that up on a pop-up and I was surprised I was hooked. Thinking of buying again as I've donated my copy already few years ago.
I read The Will of The Many because of you, I trust your recommendations and our tastes align. And I started wondering if it was going to be a 5* read for me. And it absolutely was, and now I don't know what to do with myself because everything I read just isn't hitting. I spent 3 hours describing the plot to my partner and I just.. man it was so good
Does it get better after he arrives to the school? I soft DNFed it because it was just ok for me up until that point and I'm still wondering if I should continue.
@llaiyaz I honestly thought when I started reading that I wasn't going to super love it. And I kept going cause I didn't hate it. But I enjoyed the world and the concept. And then... it is so worth the read. I really liked the parts before the school, but I can appreciate that when thats when you know what you are getting yourself into that's what you are expecting. I would say give it another go, get to the school and then see how you feel
@@llaiyaz he gets some really fantastic friendships going when he gets yo the school and I was talking to my partner, because the characters just flow together in a really nice authentic way. It doesn't feel forced. And the mystery just gets more fantastic the further you go. The political intrigue.
I won't say too much more, but it was really really great
I read The Sparrow on your recommendation and absolutely LOVED it, so thanks!!
Blood over bright heaven cured my reading slump, Absolutely adored it. Also, i love how angry people got (and still get) at your dune review 😂
Of all the books that you have recommended in this video, i have read 11 of them and 5 are in TBR! Just shows how religiously i have been following your recommendations 😅
And the last one that i read was I who have never known men. Absolutely loved it!!❤
I am so thankful that I read I Who Have Never Known Men....and thanks to you. Not usually my genre, either!
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo books are SO good. i don’t know how to explain it to people because i can’t put a finger on all the things that make it so good.
Thank you so much for your book recommendations. These kinds of videos always help me build my TBR list.
Whoa, so many good book recs-TY! I’m currently reading & obsessed with Starling House. I wasn’t expecting to enjoy it as much as I am, but not done yet.
Lizbeth is such an amazing character. I love her. (Dragon Tattoo)
Razorblade Tears is one of the best books I read last year. 5+++ stars
Blood Over Bright Haven is a much anticipated read for me. Couldn't get hold of it at my library yet, but I got to read a sample. SO good! 😲 That first chapter made me cry a lot. So invested right from the start.
Just read Divine Rivals and loved it!
Gonna check out "The Will of the Many"! Thanks for the recommendation :) Have a great day, Emily. You rock!
I just finished Divine Rivals it was amazing imo
Book Lovers and Beach Read are probably my favorite contemporary romances! Some books I always recommend are The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, Where the Crawdads Sing, The Hunger Games/Catching Fire, Daisy Jones and The Six, The Nightingale, and House in the Cerulean Sea!
Highly recommend Funny Boy: The Richard Hunt Biography by Jessica Max Stein. Hunt was one of the OG core Muppet performers. Scooter, Beaker, Janice, Statler, Sweetums. Nobody has really done a deep dive into his life before.
Love the description of The Sparrow as A Little Life in space! I remember you've read 3-Body Problem, which I'm about to finish today. Are you planning on watching the series when it starts later this week?
Came here to comment this! I was expecting her to say Three Body Problem as well!
I feel like it’s gonna be a shit show but probably
I read I Who Have Never Known Men last weekend. Wow! I actually vlogged it too, but it mostly consists of me saying, “It’s so interesting!” over and over lol. I didn’t think I’d like it that much because it’s not my usual genre, but it was mind-blowing! The book I tend to recommend everyone read is Watership Down by Richard Adams. It is my all-time favourite book. I know it’s about rabbits, lol, but I adore the characters and it’s full of action and I love the world he creates with their mythology.
and my TBR list grows ever larger...thanks
I read Divine Rivals and enjoyed it. It’s part of a duology, which makes it an easier series to finish. 😅
I’m halfway through I who have never known men and I’m loving it!!
The Secrets Of Droon by Tony Abbott is one of my fav series. Incredible world building and character arcs. The cover artwork is gorgeous. It might be for kids but still deserves some attention. I don't understand how it hasn't been adapted for tv yet. It's perfect for the medium.
OMG I absolutely loved One Dark Window😭😭😭😭😭
I think I’ll pick up both and flip a coin and see what I read. Will it save me from the slump??? 🤷♀️
@@BookswithEmilyFox Really hope so ahahah If they don't, just go with Ice Planet Barbarian. We all know that's the ultimate answer lol
I really need to read all those book! They all sound so good
I like your Slump suggestions! Both of them are on my TBR.
I think I'll try to get to at least one next month and vlog it! They seem very readable!
If you want an older romance book with grown women I recommend Jennifer Crusie. My favorite of hers is Fast Women.
Oh yeah love Jennifer Crusie books…loved all of them, Bet Me was my fave. Maybe cuz I listened to it on CD (it’s been awhile!) while traveling.
Im currentlying reading Blood Over a Bright Haven. Im about to finish it actually but it is so frustrating at times but also so addicting to read.
I really love when you just randomly pick up a book that you don't even knew anything before or wasn't in your radar and it ends up being a favorite. Like you with I who have never known men. It happened to me with Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto and more recently with Gods of Jade and Shadow.
Also, I read a while back Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson and it was okay but I didn't like it that much because I thought the characters were a bit superficial. Now the Stormlight Archive sounds interesting, is it better in that sense?
Emily is making me consider reading that, The will of the many and Blood over Bright Haven 😅
I feel the exact same way about the “Evelyn” books, and had the same experience as you. I read and enjoyed them when they were in favor and now that there’s backlash, I reread and yeah, I can see the criticisms but I still like them.
Time loop recommendation: Neverworld Wake by Marisha Pessl (if you haven't heard of or read already)
Did you hear that Blood Over Bright Haven was picked up by Del Rey? Sounds like ML Wang might be published by trad publishing in the future! Only downside to new readers is that the ebook is now quite a bit more expensive 😭
This is interesting. I bought Blood Over Bright Haven about a month ago from Amazon. I looked today and it’s not available in paperback anymore. Glad I got it when I did.
I was wondering when that would happen!! Hope that helps her books get more hype because she deserves it!
@@BookswithEmilyFox bought it because of you. :)
The book was available for free in Kindle Unlimited. Mayne not now.
Something’s becoming tv shows if you didn’t know are the inheritance games and A Good Girls Guide to Murder series. Both are definitely becoming shoes soon. AGGGTM is coming out this year I think but I don’t know when The Inheritance Games is coming out yet.
I read blood over bright haven because of you and it was my first (& only) 5⭐ of this year 😭
The Sparrow is one of my most recommended.
I was truly surprised by how much I enjoyed Divine Rivals.
I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention Kindred...
Yesssss please read Divine Rivals. This comes from someone who rarely reads YA fantasy.
I absolutely loved The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle! Idk why anyone would hate it! That is one of my favorite books!
The ending was definitely on the weaker side but I think a lot of people found it confusing. Tbf the first 100 pages are lol I loved the concept so much tho!
@@BookswithEmilyFox yeah that makes since why people didn’t like it!
" ...give me a few more years..." 😂 Could not agree with you more.
I also liked A Little Life and I always feel icky saying it, but I really did. And I love those characters so much still.
I'm distracted by how much I LOVE your sweater. Would you mind sharing where you bought it?
Unfortunately it's old (5-10 years) but it was from Topshop on ASOS!
The Perfume. Read it at least 6 times, I'm angry at everybody who doesn't like it and it is about time I read it again. Yes, it is weird, but I loved the description of all the smells. It is also better to read this book in original, in German. I had a Romanian translation and it had several errors. I don't know about the English translation.
The Shadow of the Gods and The Hunger of the Gods by John Gwynne were so readable, I *know* they got me out of a small slump in January.
I need to read book 2
NGL, I expected to see “Kindred” somewhere in this video!
I totally hear what you’re saying about Dune being slow paced and dry (pun intended). That said, if you hated Paul’s character development in the book but liked the earlier themes/ideas, you may get something out of the second book (Dune Messiah). Or just wait until the third movie comes out - something to consider!
I also a hated fangirl but I loved the gunslinger 😂😂 I still love to see your opinions
Would really like a dystopian books recommendations video 🙏
Ok that's it I surrender, I'll read I who have never known men ☺️
About Divine rivals, I'm surprised you're going to read it, I really can't imagine you liking it... but I'll be here to watch your review! 😉
see now for the longest time I took your opinion of dune as fact but then i actually read it and i disagree so badly (I do have my own issues with it tho don't get me wrong) but I can see exactly how it would feel boring and tedious to some people! someone described it as delightfully boring and yeah I have to agree, cause it worked for me like a charm lol
me watching this while reading Jade Legacy 🫣 i picked up the series on a whim last month because id heard you talk about it before. it’s already got me good in the feels a couple of times but i know from your goodreads review that Legacy is not gonna be easy.
thanks for all these recs! obviously, i’ve already taken one of them and am so glad i did!
I’d love a video of book recommendations to start learning French.
I’ve never had to learn French.
Once you have some vocabulary you could try rereading books (especially YA) in French.
Housemaid was horrible but readable and busted my slump.
I do have that one on my shelf... I might have to try it
It was so bad that I read it in one sitting and was texting my sister the whole time about it because she had just read it. It was fun.
So many things I agree on but the time loop thing is going over my head 😂 wrong place wrong time and Evelyn Hardcastle were awful in my opinion, the repetition made it so boring I DNFd both 😅 love that you brought Blood over bright haven to my life, it’s indeed amazing.
Hey Emily went to check out Blood over Bright Haven and its being removed from Amazon UK. Being re released in October Must be getting picked up by a publisher
I ended up finding out just after filming this video. I’m glad her book is being picked up a publisher. She deserves it!
8:35 Bought it as soon as you said it was your first five star of the year😂
blood over bright haven is being traditionally published! it's great to see M.L. Wang get picked up, but it will probably be out of print until it comes out through the publishing house T T
I’m happy for her… but that sucks until then lol
9:00 😂 totally. I explained the system to my husband and he was like, “so a pyramid scheme.” Yes. It literally is a triangle.
I DNFd Dune after a couple paragraphs 😂 tedious is the perfect word.
Radiance by Grace Draven is super readable and got me out of my slump
I’ve read all but three and two of them are ones you don’t like!!
oh my god. I read 3 pages of Dune and then closed it and said no, thank you.
Hi Emily, mentioning you love scifi books I have a question. Apart from Neuromancer that eveyone knows, I was reommended to read Schismatrix Plus (1996) by Bruce Sterling as a classis cyberpunk piece which was an inspiration for later works by other famous authors. To my great surprise, almost no one talks about this book, why? Have you read it? If not look it up. Thanks.
I don't know about this book, but I want to recommend Tad Williams tetralogy City of Golden Shawods, they are soo good (virtual reality but so much more)
As someone who uses Ice Planet Barbarians to get out of a reading slump, I thought IPB2 was "better" than the first one. I liked the characters more at least. I'm always interested in seeing another IPB gigglefest vlog from you 😂
Damn it.. if my slump doesn’t go away in April I’ll pick it up 😂
As somebody who doesn't really pick up sci-fi: I don't like stuff set in the outer space and futuristic, high-tech society. I like supernatural stuff though (like The X-Files lol).
I still can't find Blood over Bright Haven. I would love to read it.😢
It was just picked up by a publisher! It will be republished and come out in October!
I feel you hate for DUNE. It's my most hated book of all time. It took that spot and nothing can fight it down from there. This could only become so popular pushed by certain men wanting to be the chosen one, and they will forever deny that there is something wrong with this book. While the list of WTFs about Dune is eternal.
I also gave it one star and it didn't take a day for men on goodreads to ask me why I would do that.
You gave 2 stars to Dune!!! Know your stars Emily! hahahahahaha
I'm curious to know how you found the experience of reading the original French version of I Who Have Never Known Men vs the translation?
I didn’t notice any big difference. I did like reading it more but it’s just because I got more out of it by reading the book again. I’m sure I’ll feel like that each time I reread it
That's good to hear, it suggests the translation was true to the text. My French is very rusty, so I wouldn't get far with the original 😂
Had to check on Blood Over Bright Haven and my Libby says the audiobook is publishing 10/28/24!!!! :)
Yes it just got picked up by a publisher!
I do not shut up about Becky Chambers! And NK Jemisin. And Emily Henry 😂
I bought Blood Over Bright Haven based on your recommendation, buuuuut I have not read it yet because I am who I am. 😂
As soon as you say you disliked dune I was like YES my people 😂
Popular book i hated: graceling by kristen cashore. Nope. Nope. Nope.
Book that needs more hype: the blood trials by n.e. davenport.
My favorite book of last year !
all the books that you can read as a stand alone vid.. please ;)
I've done some :) ruclips.net/video/Fgb6WR-W-lc/видео.html
ruclips.net/video/sVPSkWghJF8/видео.html
I also bought a beautiful edition of Dune, so sure I would love it. Read one third and gave up lol. I think the movies are the perfect adaptation, because I find them equally boring.
I haven’t watch the second one yet… I’m not in a rush!
I love Evelyn 🥹
📚📚📚
Dune sucks (althou back in the day it was mind blowing), and Way of Kings will always be my favorite!
hahaaaa 'i will continue to hate on it i dont care' savage! but also valid
I'm a sad person since besides my mom, nobody in my circle reads, so can't recomend books. And my mom and i have different tastes (which is funny since it was she who would bring fantasy books from the library to me). She reads literature, classics and magical realism (one of her favourite authors is Isabel Allende and if you know her books, are full of magical realism). And I am more of a fantasy, science fiction, non-fiction kind of gal.
I’m on the same boat as you. My mom is the only avid reader in my admittedly small circle and our tastes are so different 😭. She likes to read steamy historical fiction, metaphysical books, pseudo science, magical realism and generally things that have a guaranteed happy ending. 😢 I read a lot of different genres except those lol. Right now I’m reading The Unmaking of June Farrow and 8 minutes in I’m bored.
I have to disagree on Blood over Bright Haven being a bingeread, at least it wasn't for me. It was great, I also gave it easily 5 stars, but it was so PAINFUL to read. The emotional hurt! the rage! I kept having to put it down, because I was in no condition to read something so heavy and I needed to read something lighthearted and humorous on the side to not fall into a reading slump.
I’ll buy that copy of Dune from ya 🙃
Shipping anything in Canada is so expensive, it’s not worth it 🙃
❤📚🐱
MY Guilty pleasure is Richter Scale by Davies if you want Ice Setting and Alien Bond Mate with more brain and consent.
1000 better than Ice Planet Barberians [ that book makes me what to break something]
I'm just here wondering why you haven't gotten rid of Dune yet. 😂
I was going too but that copy is pretty
I love Dune with all my heart and soul BUT a blasphemous opinion I have is that Wheel of Time sucks ass. Terrible. And I love lots of high epic fantasy but NOT WoT.
I bought I who have never known men because it has been mentioned so many times and I got curious, but it was the worst read of 2023 for me :D
mild spoiler: NOTHING HAPPENS - and the writing wasn't good enough to divert my mind from the .. nothingness
I loved The Will of the Many such a great book loved it so much 🌞🌞🩵🩵🌞💜💜🧡💚🧡🌷🌷💔💔🩷💗📚📚📚📙📙📙❤️🌻🌻🌻🌼🌼💗💗🌈🌈📖📙📙📖📙📙📖🪻🌷💖🩵🩵💜🧡🧡🩷🩷💛🌷🪻🪻🌈💗❤️❤️💜💜💜💜💜❤️❤️❤️❤️🌼🌻🌻
İ finished “Jade City” yesterday and İ think İ’m never going to stop grieving Lan 😭 why would Fonda Lee do that to me?😭 the second and third one are on their way to my, but İ’m gonna be honest, İ’m kinda scared to read them, because İ know Fonda is going to hurt me again?😭
She will. Again and again and again 😭
I do think you are wrong about Dune. I would have expected that you would have been very intrigued by the Bene Gesserit. I might suggest that you listen to some youtube videos that do detailed summaries of the series to get more about them. As the series develops we learn more and more about them, and I really think that they would speak to your interest in feminist prose. The summaries might be adequate for the purpose of enjoying the idea of the sisters without the mechanics of Frank Herbert's writing that you really disliked. Or, maybe wait until the TV series about them comes out. Might get you the good stuff?
In contrast, I read /I Who Have Never Known Men/ on your recommendation. I found the premise intriguing - perhaps as intriguing as I have in other of my favorite sci-fi novels. However, for me the prose in English was so dry that I had trouble staying engaged and motivated to keep with it. I understood that the narrator was emotionally altered by the circumstances of her upbringing. For me, though, I wondered if it would have had more impact were it not a first person perspective.
