Leif Erikson discovers America // 999 AD // The Saga of Erik the Red

  • As requested in our poll a few days ago, here we have some more Icelandic saga for you!
    Though not supposedly the first European to see America (that honour goes to Bjarni Herjólfsson), Leif Erikson is credited with being the first to make landfall on the American continent. As the saga tells it, Leif first sighted 'Vinland' (as it was later named after its supposed abundance of grapes) after being blown off course en route to spread Christianity to Greenland on behalf of Olaf Trigvasson. Located in modern day Newfoundland in Canada, a number of Viking age settlements have been dug up in that area - including a ship repair station - dated to a good five hundred years before the arrival of Columbus.
    How do we actually know about history? Voices of the Past is a channel dedicated to recreating the original accounts from the people who lived through events, or who lived far closer to them than we do today. We do this word for word, with an accompanying soundtrack of rousing music and images.

      @Ding Dong The Vikings literally won every single engagement mentioned in the saga's but yes due to the fact of them being hopelessly outnumbered. The small group of people that did venture to the new world could not have hope to conquer, let alone hold any territory in the new world. That's not to say that an entire Viking army couldn't. But to that, we have to take into consideration the ridiculous distances required for such an army to travel. The logistics of such an operation and the population and economy of the countries that would have had to supply such an army and a colony thereafter. Add all that up and you get a big fat impossible sticker.

    • @quidam_surprise
      @quidam_surprise 3 года назад +1

      First off, the English colonisation has simply been a by-product of the findings of Columbus. So it already has very little connection to him, you lot basically gave yourself a day off for no reason. That's like if the United States wanted to celebrate the first person that has ascended Mount Everest.
      Secondly, advocating to replace your celebration with in homage to Leif *Eriksson* is allegedly an even dumber decision given the Norse discovery had straight-up no impact on the establishment and development of Post-Columbian American societies.
      The Norse essentially pulled a "Seen ✅" and then eventually went back to Europe.
      So, attributing this accomplishment to Leif *Eriksson* in particular makes little to no sense.
      You could celebrate the moon landing or commemorate something related to indigenous folks maybe Just go outside and try to do something productive enough that will possibly remembered and observe... instead of make a fuss of an event you're quite remotely related to 🤨

      I would like to point out that Scandinavians do in fact pronounce the name Leifr/Leifur incorrectly. Icelanders pronounce it very differently. and not only is Icelandic the closest language to old Norse Leifur also happened to be an Icelander which I'd say gives us a pretty good claim to dictate how his name is pronounced. Our pronunciation is something like L-eh-f-or.

    • @mentalmelt
      @mentalmelt 4 года назад

      Not true. Leif and life are not pronounced exactly the same. Phonetically, Leif is pronounced Læif, while the word life is pronounced laif.

    • @eriktheviking927
      @eriktheviking927 4 года назад

      @@mentalmelt are you an english speaking person?
      The main problem in any case is the pronpouniation that most english speaking people are used to and that is 'Leaf' like a leaf on a tree for instance.
      And that sounds nothing like how Leif is pronounced.
      In fact it sounds like a whole other word.
      So as long as we can get it towards the English 'Life' in pronounciation or the more technical 'Læif' then it will annoy me no longer.
