Leif Erikson discovers America // 999 AD // The Saga of Erik the Red

- As requested in our poll a few days ago, here we have some more Icelandic saga for you!
Though not supposedly the first European to see America (that honour goes to Bjarni Herjólfsson), Leif Erikson is credited with being the first to make landfall on the American continent. As the saga tells it, Leif first sighted 'Vinland' (as it was later named after its supposed abundance of grapes) after being blown off course en route to spread Christianity to Greenland on behalf of Olaf Trigvasson. Located in modern day Newfoundland in Canada, a number of Viking age settlements have been dug up in that area - including a ship repair station - dated to a good five hundred years before the arrival of Columbus.

This channel is a true gem.
Voices of the Past, please consider to put some subtitles in the videos.
The journey had NOTHING WHATSOEVER to DO with CHRISTIANITY .
I've spent 25 years in archaeology, studying Scandinavian countries ( Viking era) and Anglo Saxon England.
Other eras too, but Viking Saxon era was / is my passion.

I learned something new about Leif Erikson today:

Had the Vikings gone just a little further South they would have hit the mother lode. Timber galore, arable lands, and game aplenty.
Imagine if there had been a Viking settling of America, it would be a very different place.
@@Delicious_J If they had settled an island around the west coast of Canada and eventually got more Nordic people to come it would have changed the history of the place altogether
@@abyssstrider2547 they would've settled the entire country before they got to the west coast

And Natives. Plenty of well armed, healthy natives, who would very likely have slaughtered them and decimated their number had they landed on the mainland
It is today indeed strange to think that there was a Catholic Bishop of Greenland in the 1200s

Continue to research pronunciation of names? (Most use the old Norse "lafe" for Leif, I believe). Thank you for your unique contribution of making primary resources more available to all learners!
the Old Norse is pronounced "Leifr" [ei] like in "they"
The pronounciation should sound very much like the word "Life" but in an accentless/flat intonation.
@@wenzelplot no, not at all, his actual name was pronounced "Leifr" [ei] like in "they"
@@meginna8354 suppose that depends on which source of old norse you're coming from. "Leifr" would be a variant I'd think and not the origin
@@wenzelplot wrong, it is the Old Norse varitant and how he was named.
There are statues of tabacco leaves at Roseland castle ! And corn !
The Vikings were so far out of Western civilization, that when they came in they forgot where they had been. Not having a comprehensive writing system didn't help either.
The existence of Vinland was recorded in Norse Sagas. And in the 15th century there was a manuscript made in England that described this new land...BEFORE Columbus made his 1st voyage! Also there is no trace of the Columbus settlement "la navidad" in Haiti today.
The knowledge of Greenland was never lost in Scandinavia. The Danish king did regularly send merchant ships to Greenland to trade Walrus and Narwhal "ivory" But the trade was interrupted by the black death, after the plauge the Danish king did try to restart the trade after the black death, but it was to late, the setlement was lost. (they probebly emegrated to Island there there was lots of good and "free" land after all death)
All I'm saying is the Vikings didn't create the Colombian exchange.
@@kirgan1000 The Little Ice Age made it impossible to get to or from Greenland. No timber, no iron to repair and replace weapons, land that couldn't be farmed or used to raise livestock, the Norse colony became unsustainable.

How I wish Lief Erickson could have maintained a colony in Greenland but with the technology of the time it would have been impossible.
Why tho? There wasn't much to gain there, and the inuit disliked them, it was pointless
Impossible? But people did live there, didn't they? Also, wasn't it a lot more green then than now?
I must admit, this is the first time I've ever heard that Eric was Christian
What a great Catholic!
Logistic is the main reason why columbo was needed to rediscover America.the vikings in Greenland never had enaf people and material to sustain America a as thear territory.
@Jormangandur83 also technology and where they landed
@Ding Dong The Vikings literally won every single engagement mentioned in the saga's but yes due to the fact of them being hopelessly outnumbered. The small group of people that did venture to the new world could not have hope to conquer, let alone hold any territory in the new world. That's not to say that an entire Viking army couldn't. But to that, we have to take into consideration the ridiculous distances required for such an army to travel. The logistics of such an operation and the population and economy of the countries that would have had to supply such an army and a colony thereafter. Add all that up and you get a big fat impossible sticker.
That’s it?arent the sagas a tad longer?
Can you do excerpts from the Vinland Saga also?
A remarkable adventure centuries before Columbus, and yet has *zero* significance for the formation of the Americas of today. There is a reason Columbus is much more closely associated with the discovery of the New World.
This little trip by Erikson did *not* lead to the Americas becoming integrated with the rest of the world, and so it remained practically undiscovered.
nice
Wait, Greenland was green? Vines in Canada? What were the emissions of their boats?
Greenland supposedly got that name to encourage settlement there. Can you Imagine the dissapointment?
@@t16205 Areas of central Europe which don't have vines now used to produce wine until 17th Century.
In the Middle Ages there was a warmer period, and when it ended it drew the vikings away from Greenland as the climate cooled off and the land wasn't arable anymore.

But his Viking people didn't follow up. Europe's loss, 1st Nation's gain.
King: Leif I want u to go to greenland and convert people.
Leif: Ohhhh.....yeah.....I dont wanna turn u down bro but I don't think this is gonna go over well....Can I go and not do the Christian thing?
King: Haha you'll be fine, have fun!
Leif: Ok :(
We need a Leif Erickson day instead of Christopher Columbus Day
First off, the English colonisation has simply been a by-product of the findings of Columbus. So it already has very little connection to him, you lot basically gave yourself a day off for no reason. That's like if the United States wanted to celebrate the first person that has ascended Mount Everest.
Secondly, advocating to replace your celebration with in homage to Leif *Eriksson* is allegedly an even dumber decision given the Norse discovery had straight-up no impact on the establishment and development of Post-Columbian American societies.
The Norse essentially pulled a "Seen ✅" and then eventually went back to Europe.
So, attributing this accomplishment to Leif *Eriksson* in particular makes little to no sense.
You could celebrate the moon landing or commemorate something related to indigenous folks maybe Just go outside and try to do something productive enough that will possibly remembered and observe... instead of make a fuss of an event you're quite remotely related to 🤨
Wonder how different it would've been if the Vikings had stayed in North America
We'd be speaking Swede, Norway, Icelandic, Danish rathen than English, Spanish, French.
Nothing against Christopher Colombus but I DO so much like to believe that the Vikings were there first . 👍

Leif is in Norwegian actually pronounced the same as english life.
his actual name was pronounced "Leifr" [ei] like in "they"
I would like to point out that Scandinavians do in fact pronounce the name Leifr/Leifur incorrectly. Icelanders pronounce it very differently. and not only is Icelandic the closest language to old Norse Leifur also happened to be an Icelander which I'd say gives us a pretty good claim to dictate how his name is pronounced. Our pronunciation is something like L-eh-f-or.
Did the Spaniards just not talk to the Norse?

They forgot to say anything about his diverse crew or his Oriental ship.
What?
For all you English speaking people out there:
The name Leif is pronounced exactly the same way as the word 'Life' is in English.
Every time you say Leaf, the old viking would have smacked you upside your head folks
Not true. Leif and life are not pronounced exactly the same. Phonetically, Leif is pronounced Læif, while the word life is pronounced laif.
@@mentalmelt are you an english speaking person?
The main problem in any case is the pronpouniation that most english speaking people are used to and that is 'Leaf' like a leaf on a tree for instance.
And that sounds nothing like how Leif is pronounced.
In fact it sounds like a whole other word.
So as long as we can get it towards the English 'Life' in pronounciation or the more technical 'Læif' then it will annoy me no longer.
