    Great live band. Got to see them many times in the early nineties. They played out a lot In NYC. Saw them with Fugazi, Jawbox, circus Lupus (my personal favorite). DC had a great scene. All the bands sounded very unique. No copycat scene shit. Hoover, Autoclave etc. I’m pleased to see a new generation of kids listening to the nineties amazing array of indie/post hardcore.

    Excellent analysis 👍
    I remember discovering them in 1994 - alongside Tool, Helmet, Hum and others (good times).
    I was already listening to a lot of "independent" bands, for lack of a better word, but I was also a *huge* (early) Genesis fan, and I saw something in STT that would not have been out of place in Nursery Cryme. Mainly the vocals and the quiet/loud dynamics and the apparent, calculated madness of it all 🙂

    • @campion95
      @campion95  23 дня назад

      It is, but it may be a true statement. As a huge fan of specifically “unique” rock bands I don’t think there’s really anyone that matches STT’s beautiful balance of bizarre and catchy. Primus and Mr.Bungle definitely can have hooks for days but they’re outwardly bizarre, I think what makes Shudder to Think so interesting is because they’re kind of like those bands disguised as a 90s Rock band, and to be in on it is a lot of fun!

    Thanks for this summary of this very unique Post-Hardcore band. I spent a lot of time with their albums in the mid-nineties and they almost felt like a special kept secret, even though they were on a major label and had a Buzz Bin video on MTV in 1993/1994 (or whenever that was). Only a couple of my friends were fans. Later on, I was backstage with a friend at a Yeah Yeah Yeahs show in LA and I saw Craig Wedren. I went up to him and thanked him for the amazing music and he was super appreciative and charming. Class act.

    By far one of my all time favorite bands. Saw them at the old 9:30 club when an unknown band Rage Against the Machine opened for them. Craig came out and said "That's a hard act to follow". Growing up in Washington DC, I didn't quite get Shudder To Think at the time. I was more into their straight ahead contemporaries like Helmet and Quicksand. It wasn't til years later that I grew to appreciate how bizarre and unique they were. Another band that had a somewhat similar approach was New York's Barkmarket, who were fronted by Dave Sardy. Like Shudder To Think, they would often slip in really dissonant and angular guitar riffs in between more approachable melodic parts.

    Excellent. STT produced some fascinating and brain bendingly unique rock. Pony Express is filled with the sort of songs you need to sit with and focus on. The hooks don’t jump out and wave at you all the time, but once they find you they’re undeniable. “9 Fingers” remains my favorite track on that album, but the brief bluesy guitar solo midway through “No. Room 9 Kentucky” is one of my favorite in all of rock, and the return from the sloshy middle section in the middle of “Hit Liquor” bangs so hard you need a helmet. Thanks for giving this band their due respect.

    The way they were able to juggle discord (they were signed to dischord haha) and melody is incredibly unique. Dissonance, noise, odd time signatures and beautifully absurd lyrics make them so great. 🔥

    The last time I saw them play was in Boston, opening for Dinosaur Jr. Most of the kids had come to see Dinosaur Jr, but not me. Everyone was standing there with their little backpacks on, as was the style at the time, politely watching S2T. But there was one kid who was bouncing around like a pinball, bumping into everybody, and mouthing all of the words. When he saw my S2T t-shirt, he stopped bouncing around, and yelled to me, “You get it man! You get it!” I thought that was so perfect. In another setting, I probably would have found this guy completely annoying. But in this context, it seemed appropriate. Most people didn’t really “get” this band. But those that did, thought they were the best thing ever.

    What an amazing tribute to this band!! I saw these guys a couple of times, once opening for Fugazi. Met Stuart Hill twice and he was always so kind. I still listen to their music all the time.

      My favourite STT moment is on Get Your Goat when it sounds like he's singing "I'm brown pudding you to sleep". He very well may be... ah well, we'll always have the Glow soundtrack!

    I love this! But you didn't even really get into the sheer WEIRDNESS of this record, like Rm 9 Kentucky, Trackstar, etc. Best rock album ever? I think so...

      @campion95  Год назад +1

      Thank you! I would’ve loved to but I was keeping the tone as a general introduction to the band and this fantastic album. Perhaps in the future I could dive deeper into it but unfortunately it’s hard to find the time. With the rise of Black MIDI and Black Country New Road, hopefully we’ll see more creators take a second look at this album which undoubtedly inspired this whole new wave of weird rock!

    I'm so confused. My cynicism knows no bounds. I thought this was a parody *of* video essays about lesser known musical artists, and hyperbolic music criticism. "A band that was forgotten", "from an alternative universe"... I know your game! I was marvelling over how well constructed all the incidental footage was, and the filters used really DID make them look like videos from the 90s, and how the person that did Jeff Buckley's voice was hilarious. And thought "You know what, I actually wish this band was real, I like the sound of them". And then thought the comments were all on-point tongue-in-cheek impressions of know-it-all youtube commenters - making up album names which you forgot to mention like "50'000BC" - omg yes that is such a typical album name for a navalgazing rock outfit. And the album covers showed so much understanding of design cliche's in cover art.
    Dubbing over live footage of other bands was a genious touch. And wow you must have *made* some of the footage, haha the IMDB is there... it's publicly edited so that makes sense. Oh the music videos exist, guess you have to do something with the outtakes and broaden the hoax... and then I see "Uploaded 10 years ago" and after briefly wondering if RUclips was in on it, everything fell apart and I don't know what's real anymore.
    I want to enjoy Shudder To Think, but how will I shake the feeling that that they're an incredibly well constructed hoax? Does it matter? Does being privvy to an excellently curated reconstructed corner of rock music history have as much to offer me as the mythology of being 'in the know'? Is the intersubjective abstraction of parody so closely akin to the subversion of musical and lyrical expectations expressed by intelligent and revolutionary artists to render the distinction meaningless? What is love? Baby don't hurt me?
    You also forgot to mention the 1995 E.P. Switchblade Kangaroo which was released on Spontaneously Conceived Records, but never found widespread appeal despite breaking such musical ground that it was even cited by music critic Simon Reynolds, as "The single most important musical release of the late 20th century".
