The way people use the slight layering to make hair and clothes with little patches and flowers and braids and the like, is super impressive.

I don’t understand how some of the newer skins have hair that is far more detailed than 1 outer layer.
Remember back when everyone used gamerboy skins with creeper hoodies and headphones?
Now its mostly super dark teenagers with not enough space for a mouth.

Honestly this is super useful but I love the noise tool, I just generally put the noise lvl down to 5% and then go over bits that I dislike a few times, that way it gives texture that's more uneven :D
heres a tip, only minecraft bedrock skins can have transparency on the first skin layer, on java its only the second
This is so helpful! I'm a hijabi and there's not much skin to choose from that I like. Definetely gonna use these tips to make my first one.

thank you so much, love!! all you have to do is go to the bottom right hand corner and hit the "toggle grid" button (right below the hide/show body parts). then you go to "pose model mode" which looks like a person holding their arms out and is on the right side above the cube that says "front" or whichever side youre on. default poses should show up, but if they dont, click the three dots and then select "create defaults". if you go to "view" and then grass texture, you can delete it. if you go to sky color and then back to creative mode (to the left of the pose model mode) you can choose a hex for the sky color. I edit the photos to be transparent afterwards with pixlr :)

this is excellent information. I didnt even know planet minecraft had such an advanced skin editor! I always used skindex's editor. And using an image editor to play with the colors after is genius. I really dislike having to watch videos but your pacing and editing of information was very easy to listen to and follow! thank you!
If anyone is reading this: The best way to start a skin is to
1. Have a reference photo
and... 2. Fill in all the sides of the player with the base color (I.e. if the head is blue in the reference image then fill in the head with a solid blue and shade and detail from there!)
Color picking from an image is fine, always remember that it is a good learning opportunity to understand color theory!

Fun fact my first skin took me 5 days to finish...man...what a journey...and it's been only a year
damn. i should make a skin myself for that long. my first skin took 2 days to make.
2 days?? Mine took like 30 min to make really basic. VERY basic shading too. Idk how you can spend days on a single project, unless you work on it a little everyday

Tbh they still take me multiple days but im fine with that, im still learning i didnt do tons of skins yet
a shade tip from me is that whenever you're shading skin, the darker colors get more and more red.

Sometimes i would use a small bit of yellow to match my skin cuz sometimes I like making some that slightly look like me
When making skins I prefer block bench it has alot more tools for skinning which are better for people who make skins for fun and a living!
and they might want to make skins offline, so its perfect!
I've been trying to make a character with that rugged soldier type look so this might help

novaskin is really good for that, you can combine multiple skins together on layers and edit as needed, it's been 10 months but better late than never

I was making a skin and i made it have a blond beanie but im not good so it looks like checkered hair and also it just doesn't have eyes nor a nose nor a mouth cus i didn't know to make them look right.

Easy fix! Delete your description, just add like 1 letter. Once you upload the skin, go back and click “edit” on the skin on your main profile page, and add back the description. If that doesn’t work I have no idea and I’d email skindex haha

You can't because sony doesn't allow you to download them and Minecraft removed the feature to use downloaded skins for Ps4/5 (idk about Xbox and Nintendo switch)
