I can almost hear the Wolfman howling from the radios...We cruised there in the late 60's early 70's..lived in Saugus , Calif...in my 250 bucks 57 Chevy 2 door Belair...and my friends parents 63 T Bird...
i lived here in 78, i bought a 67 Chevelle Malibu two door hardtop with a 327 and fully loaded with AC cruise tilt wheel eight track cassette buckets rally wheels , cruised many nights here
The Chevy dealer was at Oxnard street and VN blvd. It was PWR for years and now I think it keys. I cruised it in the 60's, from Bob's on Sepulveda in MIssion Hills to the AW on Ventura Blvd
We went there in 1969-1970 in My 1967 Chevelle SS. We were from Torrance, Ca.. That Van Nuys Blvd was as they said back then > the Scene which is where the Saying > Makin The Scene - came from.
I was at every one of those Van Nuys Cruise nights back in 2009...such a shame that it ended because the Rydell parking lot sold and there arent any other spots for people to park and hang out now and also a few idiots screwed it up with the cops.....thanks for sharing this footage! :)
Thanks for Sharing I graduated in 1975 brings back memories, I had a 1970 Dodge Chager 383 and a 1972 GTX 440 Six pack which I bought at house of corvettes in Reseda. I remember Doug Jennings dyno
Great to see that the Van Nuys cruising is back! Another reason to come for another visit to L.A. asap! Awesome footage, thanks for sharing and hope you will shoot some more!
I prefer American Muscle Cars to be factory stock with no modifications! Some nice looking cars here! I actually visited and cruised Van Nuys Blvd in 1980. From what I remember, it wasn’t a very long cruise strip. My favorite cruising street was the famous Archer Avenue on Chicago’s Southwest Side. Some serious American muscle cars there! Great memories! The Police shut down cruising in 1991.
Grew up in the Valley, graduated from Taft High School. Wednesday's was cruise night on Van Nuys Blvd., between Victory Blvd. and Roscoe Blvd. about 4 miles, There were several other places where young people would gather during the summer nights in the Valley. One such place was in the west Valley, at the time known as Highlander Park, west of Platt Ave., south of Sherman Way. Today known as Mae Boyar Recreation Center. One night the LAPD arrived to enforce the 10:00pm curfew. Police helicopters were a new concept at the time, they were the bubble front (MASH) type choppers with a very bright search light. As the police lined up their cars (10-15) in a line a breast to drive through the park forcing everyone out. About 15 - 20 people layed down on the ground spelling out "F--k you" for the helicopter and the search light. When the search light lit them up, everyone went crazy laughing and screaming. It was great! Gas was about .35 cents a gallon, cigarettes were .36 cents a pack over the counter and .50 cents out of a machine. A six-pack of 16oz. Budwieser was about $2.00. A four finger "lid" (ounce) of Acapulco Gold, Panama Red, Colombian or Vietnamese was $10.00. I can remember filling the gas tank in my '63 VW Bug for $3 or $4. Aahhhh, those were the days...
my friend,s and i would cruise van nuys on wed. night . then on friday & sat. we would go to whittier blvd. down beach blvd. to the pier in huntington beach. then back up beach blvd. to whittiter blvd. back when gas was really cheap. some good times.
Never been around Mexicans much, and live here in the Mid West, the Car Thing will always live,People can be no goods in any culture or race.Jesus Loves You.Jesus Loves Mexicans,Whites,Black,American Indian and ETC.
My dad was part of the 50's car and bike thing....he grew up with Mexican Americans...and they were just like everybody else. Not every Hispanic in Cali is an illegal.....used to be whites and mexi's lived together no problems in California, 50 years ago
I used to live on Vanowen & Costello and VNB was the default setting on Wednesday Nights. From 71' to 77' . I used to hate it cause EVERYONE went there to do Nothing. It used to be bumper to bumper for 3 miles on good nights, from Valerio to Burbank
In late 1979 you could run into Ed Pink or Keith Black out behind the SUPER SHOPS store... among a few hemi Mopars, IF you were driving one. (1971Hemi Road Runner TorRed.) Just turned 19 and on the cusp of Pro Street. Make the turn at Jack In The Box, and do it again. November 1980..flares on the streets / intersections.... shutting it all down.
Now that was bitchin. It used to be like that on the weekends here in downtown Phoenix, but that died off in the late 80's due to gangs having shootouts with each other, etc. Police I remember limited the number of times you could pass spot within a given time frame, and good cruizin pretty much died. This is awesome though. I might have to build another car and move over there. Loved all the beautiful and sometimes quite rare muscle. Amazing, didn't know this was still taking place........
The past 2 times that I have gone to this, the lights @ the Rydells parking light have been turned off. My guess is that if this continues to happen, Van Nuys cruis night will die once again.
george......next time you WILL take me with you to cali, we can crusie the strip and hang out at the chevy shop.... sounds like fun to me! cruzin to find some girls...yea!
And seemingly not one dude showing up with a silver-wrapped Lamborghini. All cars there seem to be attainable by the average guy…well save for the Ford GT..

Prestige Pontiac on Van Nuys once worked there...
New cars just dont have the same kind of class as these classics..its sad we live in a world of plastic econonmy cars.
Great video! Keep up the show.

Bout what time of night is this?
So was it illegal to cruise Van Nuys Blvd or something? I read reference to earlier in 09' being the first time there had been cruising in 28 years.
The past 2 times that I have gone to this, the lights @ the Rydells parking light have been turned off. My guess is that if this continues to happen, Van Nuys cruis night will die once again.
