Song Link: • "Awaken" - Jon Anderso...
Can you imagine how the performers felt having done a performance like that with such a great singer, I bet they were flying for days.
Well, I gotta say, I didn't expect to just transcend into the stratosphere and out of this plane of existence while watching a JustJP video, but here I am. That performance blew the roof off my house.
Its an astronomical performance! :D
There’s no words for anything as brilliant as this.
16:20-- that crescendo so majestic. Yes, I feel something quite spiritual.
No singer sings with more love in his heart than Jon Anderson.
"Awaken" is more than a song. I would liken it more a religious experience. If Heaven had a song that greeted souls as they entered the pearly gates, it would be "Awaken". This is Yes' greatest achievement.
Absolutely! Agreed!
Even Jon was overwhelmed by the performance. Watch him at the conclusion of the song. He’s completely blown away.
This might be how he envisioned it to be! Truly a magical once-in-a-lifetime moment for everyone! Performers and spectators alike! I think Todmobile, the orchestra, and Jon Anderson made Awaken even better than Yes ever performed (IMO).
I have tears in my eyes 😭 When God hears this kind of performance he says to himself, "This what I expected of you"🤠
Lol!🙏
Nice! Agree!
When God hears this kind of performance, He says "I'll never be as good as Jon Anderson."
@@aprilstewart5929 Or I think I sound pretty good coming through Jon Anderson
Bro...I FEEL you on that. It's like..."yeah...come on up here" this is what I expected of you.
I've loved this song since 1977. Trust me, the feeling never goes away.
Yes indeed. Same here.
True, it doesn't ever go away. I saw Yes in 2003. And 'Awaken' was the highlight. To be in their presence for this song, is an unforgettable lifetime experience. The sound enveloped you completely. My heart was in awe. Goosebumps, Justin? How about whole-body tingles!
It never gets old and I am so glad. It hits me in an emotional place where nothing else touches. I cry every time. Bought it the day it came out saw it live several times at least 10 anyway. Never loses it's power. They were the greatest rock orchestra there ever was.
You are right. JP never needs to worry that he will wear out this song. And so many Yes songs also remain so fresh, uplifting and current even after 50 years. And to me many get better.
Me too. This is a true masterpiece. And when I heard the performance by Jon and Todmobile it was like meeting a friend I had lost contact with for all too many years ❤
This is PHENOMENAL!!!
The song itself and this particular performance can never be equalled. It’s a once in a lifetime thing that I reckon stunned Jon Anderson and Todmobile just as much as it’s floored everyone else who appreciates great music.
A perfect example of why it is not a good idea for other singers to try to to imitate Jon Anderson. Some vocalists cannot be imitated!
These live videos are a nice touch. Thanks!
So sad that yes replaced Jon. He recently said in the interview with Wrif in Detroit that he would love to get the band back together but doesn’t look like that’s gonna happen.
The only reasonable replacement is a female soprano. A male singer with Jon's registry is born once per century.
@@richierich398 You may remember that there are two Yes bands, one of them with Jon Anderson. Not sure if they will tour again however, but I enjoy both bands.
@@gulgian A soprano is too high, Jon is an alto with some overlap into tenor perhaps. I went to a concert by a male soprano a couple of years ago, much higher than Jon.
It's not just the pitch of his voice but also the fantastic control he can jump octaves within one line and can stress the parts he wants. As Jon said it his his musical instrument. For example in Gates in the first section he makes his voice sound like a propaganda unit for a war machine but later in Soon he sings like and angel. Not many can do that. Yes are not the same without Jon.
Yes were the Gods of Prog Rock. It was great to see Jon Anderson back on top form here, and this is by far the best version of Awaken I've ever seen. Younger people will never understand how awesome this music is.
Thank you Justin. Jon is living his dream of Yes becoming bigger than the original band or any individual member. The Spirit of the music living through newer younger musicians is what he aspires to. I felt it.
Hi jp....as a huge yes fan I've heard hundreds of live recording of the band.....when this came out I was stunned at just how they nailed it totally... toadmobile just killed it.
Check out steve hackett also..they did a show with him too
Perfection. I must have watched this performance more than fifty times. It never gets old. How is Jon still able to hit those high notes?
A great performance... I loved, i love and i’ll love this perfomance all of the time. Thank you Justin ! Thank you Todmobil ! Thank you Jon Anderson and Yes
I've been addicted to Yes since 1972, and TRUST ME, the "feeling" does not go away. I think that is some kind of miracle of life, for those of us that feel it this strongly.
I tend to default to "Close to the Edge" as my favorite Yes song - until I listen to "Awaken" again! It really is a CLOSE tie!
This is a a stunning performance, without a doubt, and might be one of, if not THE best vocal performances by Jon - ever.
Despite having some criticisms for this performance, I give it 5 out of 5 stars, just for the nearly perfect musicianship!
As for your reaction? TEN stars! You brought me to tears - AGAIN!!!! I was so INTO your enthusiastic and emotional reactions and your facial expressions and body language, and all your comments!
Blessings!
Thank you MissAstor!!
The expanded Rhino records cd of Close to the Edge rarely leaves my disc player at home. I have the same CD in my car as well. I do enjoy a couple of favorite Christmas music CDs at the holidays and occasionally some classical music or Gregorian chant. Otherwise Close to the Edge is my go-to for daily listening. I’ve never grown tired of it after more than 50 years of listening.
Jon Anderson will turn 80 this coming October 2024. 💙💙💙
A song so good that even the reaction video is uplifting. Magnificent on all fronts.
😁
Wonderful. I've listened to this many times and it only gets better, everytime.
I live about 3 miles from where Jon was born and lived as a young man ... I can still hear his local, Lancashire accent.
I loved your reaction at 16.21...you get it...a sublime, magnificent creative piece of art performed live - just magical !
Oh yes!
w00t!
So glad you did the studio version first. But this is my favorite live version of Awaken.
What can we say about such a presentation, simply wonderful, without words.
It was great to watch you riding the emotional rollercoaster! The first time I saw this performance I thought I was going to start sobbing. It is sublime.
Whether this is THE best version is I suppose always debatable but it's unarguably one of the best. Amazed how well Jon's voice has remained so perfect.
It doesn't hurt that he's got a lot of vocal reinforcement from other singers to beef up the parts where his voice is a bit weaker, but yeah -- this definitely put to rest any notions that Jon couldn't deliver as a singer after getting booted from Yes.
I´ve seen this clip many times already. I´m happy you´ve brought it up. Yeah...it works. The chills, even some tears. It´s a monumental piece of music. Awaken is one of the very best Yes songs ever.
Got me again, Justin. Anderson's voice is as pure and clean as it was when I first heard it 50 (!) years ago, and his stage presence is like a wave breaking on a beach. Starts out subtle and by the time it crests, you're carried away to a beautiful place. Thanks for sharing this video. Peace.
I’m getting chills watching you get chills. 🥶 Thanks for letting us watch with you! Such a great song and performance!
🥶😅
Justin... truly wonderful. Have you seen Todmobile's concert on you RUclips with Steve Hackett which includes fabulous version of Supper's Ready ?
And Moonlit Knight too !
Ypu, I've seen that one too :D Maybe I'll do it here one day
I was about to mention that, you beat me to it :)
Jon in the morning, cut & bale hay in afternoon. arrive home, turn on computer, and AWAKEN! Nice way to bookend the day! Thanks Justin seeing your enjoyment of a Masterpiece, makes my night! Peace.
BEST PERFORMANCE EVER of this song!!! I saw Yes perform this song twice, and this is my favorite performance....
I’ve seen this so many times and it’s amazing to share your reaction to this beautiful rendition of this classic masterpiece!
Pure magnificence! Watching this in May 2022 (again). Your reaction makes it even more special - thank you!!
Aw thank you! :D
I always have tears in my eyes by the time this thing's done...
Hey Justin, just watched your "Awaken" with Jon Anderson and Todmobile. What a fantastic version of one of the best songs ever! I didn't know it existed. Thank you so much and I'm right there with you on the many spiritual journeys with Yes.
Ty so much Daniel! Its a special song
I feel it too! This is a wonderful version of this song. He was well on the road to recovery at that stage and by the time I saw him during the ARW tour, miraculously his voice seemed fully restored. Jon and Chris are my musical heroes. It must have 1986/87 that I was swept off my feet and they have been my constant companions ever since. I honestly thing you'll love Jon's latest solo album, "1000 Hands". Well, It's coming up for half nine in the evening here in blighty and I have a bottle of brandy and I feel a full on evening with Jon Anderson coming on...enjoy yours.
Have a great evening! :D
This is beautiful
Very very very close to the original
It has this extra mood, the orchestra, the choir, that I can fall in love again with this epic masterpiece of music
Thank you for this 👍🏼
Yes, loved what you said, it's so beautiful that it would bring life to the dead👍🙏
Thanks, JP, that was wonderful. I'm convinced that this song is a masterpiece and I agree that this performance takes it to a new level. You're right - you have to feel it.
I got to see Awaken performed when the band members all got together for around the world in 80 dates…just imagine Bruford/White, Kaye/Wakeman, Howe/Rabin, Squire and Anderson performing this in the round and being front row. It’s a memory I will cherish my entire life.
Leasha Carey that version is well captured in the San Francisco 8-8-91 live video. It's a dry audio mix and really shows the talent of the "80 dates" or "U(O)nion" tour musicians. I always get tears when at the crescendo near the end Jon clasps his hands over his head.
This is a lovely memory of a very special night. Greetings, Eidur (Todmobile's bass player)
Oh awesome! Ty so much for watching!
100 years from now people will look back at this and simply marvel over the music of Yes! The same way that Classical music (Bach and Beethoven etc) lives on for all eternity! How fortunate we are to be able to enjoy it now!!
So true, I was so fortunate to see this played live back in ‘77 and I am even more fortunate that everyone today can share the enjoyment of the greatest music since the original classics of i.e. Beethoven and Mozart etc.
I may have commented this on the other video, but I got to see the Yes Union tour in Munich in 1990. I was front row, just spitting distance from Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman. They played this song. Still brings the chills and tears. Thank you.
Of all the versions I’ve listened to of AWAKEN, I love this the most! This IS PERFECTION! EVERYTHING flows beautifully, and with such purpose. All the musicians, and choir contribute to its perfection. By far, my favorite performance, perhaps of any song I know. I truly love this. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you Hogan, its absolutely lovely
This is the best live performance of this song hands down. Even better than YES. Mesmerizing
Your reactions were a joy to watch, Justin. Watching this again along with you, I was exactly the same 😮🙂
I've never seen this before. It's wonderful, thank you so much. Stairway to Heaven is classic, but I believe "Awaken" transcends it in that it is a journey from the material world to a spiritual existence.
Glad you enjoyed this one!
@@JustJP I checked out the video you recommended by Dikajee. She makes me think of a cross between Kate Bush and Fiona Apple. Nice video, haunting atmosphere and instrumentals. Thank you. Have you heard of Laszlo Buring? He makes videos like Stairway to Heaven guitar solo if done by Dire Straits. One of his videos is if the theme from "Friends" was done by Dire Straits. It's well done, but kind of funny at the same time. He's got Mark Knopfler's guitar sound down pat.
JP you are awesome! Thank you so much for continuing your Yes reactions. I can’t get enough of your very intelligent reactions!
Thanks for introducing me to this wonderful music
It is 44 years I bought "Going For The One". I saw Yes perform it on that tour (with Donovan opening for them btw). I don't know how often I heard this song through the years. But it almost never fails to catch me. And it still sends shivers. Because All is left for me, all is left for me , all is left for me since then. I am sure I am not the only one. So I think there is a good chance that this masterpiece will never bore you, too. no matter how often you hear it.
10th anniversary tour. I have the BBC recording of the concert I was at at Wembley, London.
As Yes songs go, this is the pinnacle. This is a fantastic version but I feel so blessed to have witnessed this performed with Mr. Steve Howe, Mr. Chris Squire, and Mr. Rick Wakeman (sorry… no one can hold a candle to Wakemans masterful keyboards on this song) supporting the stellar and unique voice of Mr. Jon Anderson. Quite sure I left my body. Whenever I need to reconnect with Spirit, this song does it without fail. I see it does something similar for you too Justin. The choir….. the choir…. We Have Heaven!
Thank you for bringing this to your channel and for being with me in how you feel about MY favorite song in the world.
Well done to all of the musicians. Greatest song ever written.
Pretty sure I've commented before that I got to see Yes do Awaken in 2004 at Red Rocks Amphitheater on the 35th anniv. tour. At the time was the classic line up of Jon, Chris, Steve, Rick and Alan.
Even then felt blessed to hear it in concert. It moved me so much I had to stand and absorb the music and let it flow around and through me. Now I cherish the experience as something special that will never in that way be again.
I can not believe after all of these years YES songs are finally get the recognition they truly deserve! I remember hooking school with my friends, dropping LSD and listening to Close to the Edge and watching the music pour from my speakers back in 73.. Or seeing YES for the first time on the Relayer tour, my god! Gates of Delirium back in 75... Or Returning from Japan were my ship was home-ported and going to see YES in the round Going For The One tour, 1979 and hearing Awaken live for the 1st time. Its about ********time.......
Listening over again! :)
I have to agree…this particular rendition is on a level that is beyond. I also get “shivers” when I aatch fhis performance of “Awaken”.
I see you since your first reaction with Yes. It´s really amazing the way your spirit ( as the same as the all of us) is get shocked by their music. Let me tell you something, for the rest of your life you´ll be accompanied and you´ll never be alone with that feeling. Remember what I say to you, many years from now you´ll find yourself still hearing at this music. Thank you very much for you reaction
Takes Awaken to the next level! Such a gem!
Watching your reaction to this masterpiece nearly had me in tears.
Love and share your passion for this masterwork and this superb performance.
Thanks so much Steven! Its stunning!
I have loved this song for over 40 years, since I first heard it as a child. Saw them perform this once, but not with an orchestra. This is the best version of it I've heard
JustJP You only come back down to earth when the music fades away to silence, or perhaps a little later.
And what a lovely trip it was :D
Wow, they nailed it! I did not expect that to be *that* good! Hats off to them!
If you want to be blown away by a performance, see Todmobile and guest Steve Hackett perform Supper’s Ready with an orchestra!
Oh!
Another thing to keep in mind.
Anderson was 70 years old in this 2014 performance. The man is closing in on 80 now, and while he's occasionally a bit wavery on vocals in live performance, he still is The Voice of Yes to this day, in my humble opinion.
Best performance of this piece. Ever.
Another spiritual/religious experience with you Justin. Wow. Speechless. Jon's voice after 44 years (at the point the vid was done) is flawless and chill inducing. Fantastic band and orchestra. Thank you, thank you.
I've never heard of Todmobile..that was amazing. Any Jon Anderson fans should also check out his interview with Rick Beato, which is very entertaining, he's very amusing. Great vid JP.
Still waiting on a part 2 of that
Thank you for checking this out I’ve watched at least 20 times as it I believe is most likely how they heard this in their heads the absolute grandness of the piece the dynamics and the reaching higher of the orchestra and choir .... I think I made this suggestion to you after your response to the original great 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️💯☮️
I’m not sure a more beautiful, perfect piece of music exists within the ‘rock’ category, although Close to the Edge is a close second. This performance by all involved is flawless.
An absolute classic done superbly.
Great reaction Justin, I’ve been watching your channel since the start and I kept asking for you to watch Awaken as it’s my fave Yes song, after you finally did it I suggested that you should watch the Todmobile Live version, and you replied that you already had! The song never ceases to give me chills. I think the most impressive thing in that video is John’s voice, he was about to turn 70 and his voice was almost as good as when he was in his twenties. Most rock singers’ voices have deteriorated by the time they get to that age. Cheers JP! 😁
🍻
This is how this song was meant to be, other versions are brilliant but this soars to new heights! My favourite rendition of my favourite piece of music.
Can you imagine Jon doing Oilas of Sunhillow with this ensemble?
Wonderful performance in Iceland indeed. Timeless. I've been treating myself to this version som many times. Not possible to grow tired from it! Great choice!
A truly worthy rendition. But...I saw Yes perform "Awaken" live, in the round, during the album tour in the seventies. I give the guitar and bass bonus points for effort but nothing and no one can replace Howe/Squire. Jon Anderson's voice in this? Phenomenal still even 44 years after the start of Yes. Very nice.
It's amazing that Anderson is 70 years old at this performance. The man is now closing in on 80!
Watching Chris Squire live was an experience in itself. RIP Chris.
This song gives me such a feeling.. its an incredible tingling in my head, and I tend to get emotional over listening to this one in particular. I love many other progressive groups and no other song compares to this. Jon Anderson said about this song that it was the most "complete" song they ever created. I agree 100%!
Over the years, a lot of artists lose dynamic or range in their voice, not Jon. Sounds as good now as he did years ago. Simply spectacular, and a fan blessing
Phenomenal version by Todmobile of a Yes masterpiece! Jon is in top form! Excellent review! Couldn't agree with you more!
Incredible rendition!!!!!!!!!
Deep respect to Steve, Chris, Alan & Rick but this is the best live version of Awaken by a mile. Once again highlighting Jon is the heart & soul of YES. Bravo all involved.
The best live version of Awaken there is. Not only do they play it with passion, their dynamics are spot on and they don't ritard the climax like Yes does in concert. The reason that climax works so well on the studio version is because it's played in time. In concert Yes always tries to build it up by slowing down right before it, but that only lessens its impact. So, bravo to Todmibile for not slowing down the tempo of the climax. Awesome.
Good point!
i totally love this version of the song, so glad to finally see people reacting to it!
Jon was 69yrs old during this performance! 69!!
I had/have the very same reaction you had while watching this. LOVE this song!
Without starting your review: this is the best Awaken-live version I know :-)
Mind-blowing !
This is my absolute favorite version of Awaken!!!!
I have seen YES 4 times and they played this song in two of the concert I have gone to.........Excellent!!!! And... this song and Close To the Edge always makes the audience cry!!!! I cried in all 4 concert because as one reactor call this type of music "Heaven Music." Hahahaha....lol....hahaha................Because It is "Heavenly." Really glad to see you fall in Love with YES again!!!!!! :D
I first saw this rendition a few years back. ‘Jaw dropping’ doesn’t do it justice! I was so impressed I sought out an Icelandic online retailer and bought the combined DVD & CD. It’s a prized possession, the whole concert is simply wonderful.
What a feeling Todmobile probably felt having Jon singing with them...and what a feeling he must have felt with that kind of backing music. Wow. As far as live concert videos of songs only this video and Peter Gabriel "In Your Eyes" from Secret World live make me smile every single time I watch them.
Having seen Chris Squire and Yes the greatest show on earth 36 times,I remember seeing Awaken during the Awaken tour it put everybody into the soup. This is a good rendition but nothing can replace Chris and the triple neck.
As much as I love, enjoy and appreciate this performance with Todmobile, I agree with you that there is just nothing like watching Yes play this live!
I saw them perform this twice, once on the "Going for the One" tour in Fall 1977, and again in Spring 1979 on the "Tormato" tour (the last of the "Classic" line-up tours)! Both performances were stunning, but the one in 1979 was just almost beyond belief!
@@MissAstorDancer
1979 was my first Yes concert. Prior to that, all I knew was the radio edit of Roundabout and YesSongs. Awaken performed in-the-round blew me away.
@@MissAstorDancer Having seen Yes in every decade except the 60s starting in 1971, this version stands up very well, and even with CS Awaken with another singer would not cut it. I dread to think how bad it would be with the current line up.
@@davidperry7128 I also feel that the current line-up could NOT even come close to the experience of the Classic Lineup.
The chorus and orchestra lift this to a new height however. Add Squire for perfection.
❤❤❤❤❤❤ You leave a YES concert(or I’m sure this performance with Todmobile), but Especially Yes performing this song-leaves you High! For days! It Moves you if you let it! ❤ Jon message is clear…there’s no doubt….
So truly fortunate to have experienced it front row…Grateful…and brings back wonderful memories watching this with you Again! Lol 🎼💕
This is one of the greatest live performances ever… would have loved to have been there. A powerful performance of one the greatest songs of all time.. Yes’ best song in my opinion. Every musician and singer on the stage just nailed it. Jon’s vocals were just ridiculous, it almost sounded like the studio version. Thank you for reacting to this.
I went to Iceland in 2019 before Covid-19...what a magical place to play such a magical piece,,,,,,,,,,,, my favorite song about reality, existence and the beauty of the Universe!! Well done JP!
Thats awesome! What was your favorite part of the trip/Iceland?
Super goose bumps man wow touches the soul
I love your reaction to this amazing song. Long live Yes music
Thank you John :)
Amazing! Great review mate. I've never seen this before, stunning performance by everyone. What the live performance lacked without church organ (impossible to do), it gained in orchestral accompaniment with orchestra and operatic backing. Extra credit to the lead guitarist, some complex Steve Howe licks covered there. I'll watch this again and again!
JON , la voix la plus planante ! magnifique performance !
The emotion this performance rips outta me is intense.
Awaken is a masterpiece. And that doesn't even do it justice.
What a band!
