In my mind he definitely already knew that he was going to do it before getting the money. He was a drug addict and clearly not making the best decisions. In his mind this was a way to get the money to Carm safely after he passed as a final gesture. It's a beautiful note to end the season on being that the episode started with Carm questioning whether Mikey cared about the shop at all. If he delayed his own death to make sure he packed all of that money up, I'd say he cared a whole lot in his own way.
