my bees are bringing in some nectar and pollen from somewhere. They're filling frames.
    E. Tennessee, 1750ft.
Edit: "Red maple is a challenge to identify
because of the way it changes characteristics as it gets
larger. This tree has slick, light gray bark when it is small
As it gets larger it develops a thicker, grayish-brown, flaky
bark that is heaviest at the base and becomes smoother up
the trunk. Full-grown trees may have flaky bark all the
way up into the limbs. While this bark is in transition and
smooth patches of bark are still present, very small
pimples can usually be found scattered over the smooth
surface. The crotch between trunk and limbs on red
    maple is usually narrow."

Our red maples are just starting to show buds here in Central Missouri. And yes, I raise chickens...turkeys, guinea fowl, and quail, too. Bees and birds just naturally seem to go together on a farmstead, imho. 😊

Here in southeast,Ky the red maples had started blooming around February 11, but the following week the temps dropped dramatically. Today is February 18 and it’s 20 degrees out this morning, but the temps are supposed to raise this week,so I’m hoping the maples open on up. I’ve been seeing Red, white, yellow and a brownish pollen when the bees have been out working these last few weeks.

South side Va. Campbell Co. Red Maple isn't blooming yet , but close. Bees are out on warm days and I have been feeding some sugar water. I have a few head of cattle and I feed them some silage. There's usually some silage and dry feed left in the back of my truck and the bees go crazy over it. They get all down in it and I see them taking whatever it is they're getting back to the hives. Got chickens too, wouldn't be a farm without chickens. Peace.

I'm in Virginia south of WV, the bees are bringing in pollen and brooding up. Some of my double deep hives are active in both boxes and an Apimaye I pulled four frames of sealed brood to equalize, the bees are pulling wax with a very light syrup.. I'm out hefting hives every week and intend to throw on supers pulled in the fall as feed if the hive is out of stores.. Last year lots of people had hives starve after a false spring.

Keep a rooster and / or tom turkey with the hens. The tom will watch the air and its size will discourage hawks. The rooster will quietly cluck and hens will run for cover. I let my chickens free range. 4 -5 hens would follow a rooster. Everyone said the eagles, vultures, hawks, and raptors would get them. The chickens would stand still when rooster clucked, and if the bird came close, they ran under the truck or deep in bushes. You gotta keep a male (sentinal) turkey or chicken rooster to keep watch over girls from above.

Hey David I've got maples doing the same thing here in SW Iowa! It's way early and I've been debating what to do myself. Ended up giving them some dry pollen on the warm days but it cold again and froze so I'm afraid it may ruin the maple buds.
