It's funny, "Sabotage" was the first Black Sabbath album I ever heard , back in 1980, and I absolutely loved it. I still do. And I have always loved that cover ! In the early days, I mistook Ozzy for Bill and vice versa, but I think it is a brilliant album cover. For me, it far exceeds any of the other covers of their albums. A few are, at best, OK {Black Sabbath, Vol 4, Sabbath bloody Sabbath, Never say Die, Heaven and Hell}, but Sabotage just captures something that is hard top put into words. It wouldn't be in my top 10, heck, it wouldn't even be in my top 100, but I regard it as a top cover.
Hi all. Love the channel to death. Re: Jamie’s Social Distortion t-shirt story (a relatable tale as old as time). I assume that for most Contrarians viewers, music is either one of, or, the biggest deal. Brace yourself, people. THIS IS NOT THE NORM. After spiralling down the numerous rabbit holes music obsession takes us, when we do come up for air and venture into the boring real world, it can be easy not to ‘read the room’. But, sadly, the room isn’t inhabited by Contrarians fans it’s full of, for want of a better word, ‘normal’ people. Hey, if music is just something to casually dip into when it’s convenient, then good for you. If the day comes when I buy speakers because they match my home décor rather than what they sound like, you have my express permission to shoot me in the head. You proudly wear one of your favourite shirts; a physical manifestation of a life-long obsession laid bare for all the world to see, in a cotton and poly blend. They know nothing of your spiritual relationship with X band/album. How it’s got you through the good and the bad times. They care not for the technical wizardry of the players, the genre defining production…all they see is a confusing/weird/ugly/creepy image by a band with a stupid name or they’ve never heard of. Fortunately, I’m now at an age where I don’t give a fuck about what other people think anymore. It’s very liberating - I can tell you. If not there already, I hope everyone reading this gets to a similar place soon. Goo Goo G’Joob!

The ONLY which makes it the Best album by the band.. Emerson Lake & Powell! = A child could have come up with better! It reminds me of the american "Public Broadcasting System" (PBS) logo from the 80's!
Seasons in the abyss by Slayer Presence by Zeppelin Bang! by Thunder GRRR by The Rolling Stones Holy diver by Dio Force it by UFO Pornograffiti by Extreme
"Force it" by UFO is a pun on faucet, which is the American word for a tap. But I hate the cover. It's not a _bad_ cover artistically, just one that has visual connotations that I think shouldn't be tolerated. I say that as someone that has had relatives, siblings and friends that have been sexually attacked and violated. Although "Presence" is shrouded in mystery and whatnot, I think it's a shitty cover, actually the worst of the Led Zeppelin original 10. By far.
By going through my collection, I recognized how many great albums habe crappy cover. I think some album covers are just recognized as legendary because the music is legendary. Especially Hipgnosis has a lot of terrible covers for notable albums. So here is my list: David Bowie - Hunky Dory Anathema - Eternity UFO - Lights out Stone Temple Pilots - Tiny Music Styx - Pieces of Eight RHCP - One Hot Minute Pink Floyd - Saucerful of Secrets Peter Gabriel - 3 Nick Drake - Brighter Layter Marillion - Seasons End Beach Boys - Pet Sounds Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour Black Sabbath - Paranoid
I think Hunky Dory and Magical Mystery Tour are good covers. Not great, but good. For me, A saucerful of Secrets is the best album cover Pink Floyd did, apart from the utterly magnificent "Ummagumma," "A Nice Pair" and "Relics", both of which are compilations. I actually was inspired to listen to "A Nice Pair" {a double album re-issue of their first two albums} purely on the strength of that cover. But the rest of Floyd's covers are pretty lame in my opinion, even if they are iconic and famous.
@@grimtraveller7923Relics is fantastic, as is Ummagumma, although the album is crap. But Saucerful… Something about it I don’t like. Maybe the colors. I also don’t think that Animals or Wish you were here have particularly great covers. Regarding magical mystery tour. This is my favorite Beatles album. It’s surrounded by Revolver and Sgt Pepper. Both have fantastic covers. MMT looks cheap, like some crappy fan artwork, but not like the biggest band on the planet. And Hunky Dory: I don’t like the style of the picture and I don’t like Bowie‘s style at that time. So for me this is not great compared to Low, Heroes or The man who sold the world.
@@wernermoritz882I loved STP from the first album onwards. But I really hesitated to buy Tiny Music. I hate the cover. I also think, that the cover might be one reason, why the sales went downhill
Struggling to find an example. Thin Lizzy - Thunder And Lightning comes close but objectively I don't think it's the band's best album. I love Thunder And Lightning musically but the album cover is hilariously bad. The armored glove holding a garden spade is something else lol.
Steely Dan: The Royal Scam( their best, IMHO, some will say Aja, which isn't that great an album cover either). Walter Becker(RIP) and Donald Fagen even joked it was " the worst album cover of the decade "
As a graphic designer and creative director this episode was infuriating, haha!! 1) The Grand Illusion is an amazing, iconic example of 70s art and perfectly fits the album. However, I admit they should have had the image full bleed instead of placed on a green background. 2) Angel Dust totally fits Faith No More’s avant-garde aesthetic of finding beauty within chaos. I love how it contrasts with the heaviness of the album. One of the best covers of the 90s imo. 3) All Things Must Pass is such a great, simple cover that says everything George probably wanted to say about being viewed as a solo artist, and not just a member of The Beatles. Plus there's some great symmetry between the sky and the ground. 4) I love the New Values album cover. Such a great photo of Iggy; almost sculpture-like. Beautiful colors and shadows. Not to mention it's wonderfully balanced for a tilted image. And what kind of psycho thinks Defenders Of The Faith is bad? I love you guys, but boy did this episode get me hot a few times. :)
@@wernermoritz882 Yeah I'm not a fan, although I don't think it would have been so hated if Bill Ward wasn't wearing those red tights. That's the worst part.
